2 Challenges of Inn vation: Quo Vadis Islamic Finance SYNOPSIS The wake-up call from the Global Financial Crisis in 2008 spurred innovations in the financial industry that has created a new market and value network; displacing established market leading firms, products, and alliances. New ideas and disruptive innovations generally lead to major changes in the marketplace and within the business. Today we are seeing the surge in the applications of fintech in financial transactions, as well as automations in banking processes, resulting in redundancies on the part of manpower engagement, as well as reduction of redundancies in operations. On the other aspect, economic agenda has also changed. Calls for economic transformation are to be within the agenda of Sustainable Development and Climate Change. How is Islamic Finance responding to this call and what are their relationships to the Maqasid As-Shariah? In order for Islamic finance to compete in this fast-changing world, a change in the culture of approach to banking and finance will be required. The quest for just profits is a thing of the past. Social values and sustainability objectives need to be blended with finance and to achieve this there will be need for creative ways of developing finance. 4 Challenges of Inn vation: Quo Vadis Islamic Finance DISTINGUISHED SPEAKERS Wan Abdul Rahim Kamil bin Wan Mohammed Ali Islamic Capital Market Consultant, Securities Commission Malaysia Wan Abdul Rahim Kamil has more than 30 years experience in the Islamic financial-services industry in Malaysia and is actively involved in research and development, as well as capacity building pertaining to the Islamic capital market. He is currently an Islamic capital market consultant with several institutions in Malaysia. Since 2007, he has been engaged in advisory and capacity building programmes for investors and capital market intermediaries. He is also the Project Director for the Islamic Markets ProgramSecurities Commission Malaysia Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Collaboration, and also for graduate training schemes under the Securities Industry Development Corporation (or SIDC), an industry training body for capital market, under the SC. He was actively involved in the development of the sukuk and other capital market products, and in fact contributed to the creation of the first sukuk issued by Shell MDS Sdn Bhd in 1990 a first for Malaysia and also the world. 6 Challenges of Inn vation: Quo Vadis Islamic Finance DISTINGUISHED SPEAKERS Mohammad Ridzuan bin Abdul Aziz Chief Executive Officer, Sedania As Salam Capital Sdn Bhd Mohammad Ridzuan has close to 20 years of commercially driven regulatory and compliance experience in Malaysia and Asia-Pacific. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Sedania As Salam Capital Sdn Bhd, a patented technology solution provider that utilises mobile airtime as commodity for Islamic funding with over 21 financial institutions in Malaysia. Prior to this role, he is one of the co-founders and the Chief Executive Officer of RHT Compliance Solutions ( the first and only integrated commercial outfit providing legal, governance and financial services regulatory compliance solutions for financial institutions in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, where Ridzuan focuses on viability and practical implementation of financial technology (FinTech), regulatory technology (RegTech) and multi-faceted impact of technology adoption from regulatory compliance perspectives. Beginning his career in 1997 with MUI Holding as an internal auditor, he then joined the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (now Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad) in 1998 as Senior Market Examiner during the peak of the Asia financial crisis. He was deployed to several financially stricken equity broker dealers to ensure proper business continuity, corporate governance, management transition and protection over investors interest. Ridzuan moved to Securities Commission in 2001 and was involved with the oversight of broker dealers, fund management, unit trust and secondary bond market trading. 7 Challenges of Inn vation: Quo Vadis Islamic Finance DISTINGUISHED SPEAKERS He later joined Macquarie Capital Securities Malaysia in 2005 as the Head of Compliance for Malaysia, becoming the regulatory resource person during the establishment of Macquarie Capital Securities Malaysia and played significant role for the special scheme license obtained by the firm. Ridzuan moved to Nomura Securities in 2009 as the Head of Compliance for Malaysia and led the establishment of the local management team. He was later appointed as the Head of Monitoring and Surveillance for Asia Pacific and emerging markets, covering regulatory compliance supervision for eleven (11) countries - focusing on equity and fixed income trading, structured product value chain, corporate finance advisory and managing a 50-man outsourced team based in Mumbai. In his spare time, Ridzuan trains secondary students in Malaysia and Singapore about financial literacy and basic living skills, including entrepreneurship. Ridzuan graduated from University of Wales, Aberystwyth in 1997 with BSc Economics, majoring in Accounting and Finance.
