4 Annual Dinner Supports Law Enforcement Memorial The Connecticut Police Chiefs Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation celebrated its 23rd Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Dinner on Monday, May 9th at the Aqua Turf, in Southington. As the principal fund-raiser to support the Law Enforcement Memorial in Meriden, the dinner attracted approximately 450 people including public safety officials from throughout the state and spouses and children of the fallen heroes, who were guests of the Foundation. This year s keynote speaker was Colonel Alaric J. Fox, a 22- year veteran of the Connecticut State Police. Colonel Fox began his law enforcement career as a police officer with the Willimantic Police Department, serving there for seven years before joining the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a Special Agent. After two years of federal service, he joined the Connecticut State Police. Appointed to the rank of Colonel on April 1, 2016, Fox held several assignments while with the State Police including: Patrol Trooper; Resident Trooper; Training Academy Instructor; Patrol Sergeant; and Resident Trooper Supervisor. As a Lieutenant, he was the Commanding Officer of Troop C in Tolland and of the Training Academy. Promoted to Captain in 2010, he oversaw the Bureau of Selections and Training, as well as the Professional Standards Unit. In 2011, Fox was promoted to Major and served as the Chief of Staff to Colonel Brian Meraviglia, until his recent appointment. State Police bagpipers open the Law Enforcement Memorial Dinner ceremonies The evening s program opened with a procession led by the Connecticut State Police Bagpipe Band. They were joined by the Southington Police Department Honor Guard, who posted the colors on the stage. Following an opening prayer, a candle was lit at the Memory Table, which held a single, vacant place setting, symbolizing the police officers lost in the line of duty. James M. Skip Thomas, Chair of the Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation and President of the Hundred Club, then welcomed the guests and family members. At the 2015 dinner, Edward Deveau, the Chief of the Watertown (MA) Police Department, recounted the protracted gun battle between the police in Watertown and the two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings. This year, Colonel Fox provided a unique bookend to that narrative, describing his experiences at the 2013 Boston Marathon as a participant. Fox finished the race, reunited with his wife and two children, and went to the Prudential Building food court for something to eat. When the two explosive devices detonated near the finish line, Fox recalled that near panic set in within the food court. People inside the building were trying to get out of the building. People outside the building were trying to get inside the building. Imagine a near-sea of humanity on the cusp of a stampede. 4

5 Annual Dinner, continued He described his observations as his family held onto one another and flowed with the wall of humanity through the glass doors to the outside. Smoke billowed overhead. An acrid smell filled the air. Blood was visible on the street. In the moments that followed, he continued, it was law enforcement that I noticed. It was the police officers and state troopers that ran toward the smoke, toward the blood, and toward the unknown. It was the symbolic brothers and sisters of the 138 names that adorn our Connecticut Law Enforcement Memorial who stepped forward during this chaos. As a trained and experienced police officer, Colonel Fox noted the irony of being out of his jurisdiction, stripped of his professional tools, and relegated to the role of observer. Now a bystander, he reflected, as trained professionals [we] have a feeling that there is something that we can do. We are very good at fixing problems. Helpless and fully dependent on the heroes of law enforcement, the fire service, and EMS, is the only way that I can describe the hours that followed. maimed, Colonel Fox expressed deep appreciation for the first responders who provided aid and comfort to those all those in need: the wounded, the athletes, the families, and the lost, disorientated and shocked bystanders. We live in a world that uses the term hero far too loosely, he observed. We use it for movie stars. We use it for politicians. We use it for professional athletes. While these individuals might have unique, singular abilities, and while they might, on occasion, even engage in heroic efforts, they are not our true heroes. I proudly share with you, that those who ran toward this carnage, just like the 138 individuals whose names are inscribed on the Connecticut Law Enforcement Memorial, as well as countless others, who toil every day in virtual anonymity, perhaps even in obscurity, are our true heroes. He was able to shepherd his family away from the carnage to the safe refuge of the lobby in Beth Israel Hospital, near Simmons College. There, with mass transit completely shut down, he arranged, with help from friends, acquaintances and good fortune, for transportation out of the city, back to his car, and the trip home. 6 Springfield Museum Exhibit Honors Firefighters Lost on 9/11 The Wood Museum of Springfield History in Springfield, Massachusetts has extended its special exhibit, better angels: the firefighters of 9/11, through November 6, The exhibit features 343 portraits by artist Dawn Howkinson Siebel, one for every New York City firefighter lost in the World Trade Center attacks. Each firefighter s portrait was painted onto a small burned block of wood. Displayed in seven rows of 49 columns, the images create a wall measuring 4 feet high by 21 feet long, allowing visitors to come face to face with men who made their living running toward danger and saving lives, even at the risk of their own. The exhibit, better angels: the firefighters of 9/11, displayed at the Wood Museum of Springfield History The artist with NYC Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano and Ron Siarnicki, Director of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Siebel, a resident of Easthampton, Massachusetts, was living in Colorado at the time of the attacks, but had been a longtime resident of Manhattan in the years prior. Inspired when The New York Times printed photos of all 343 of the fallen FDNY members, Siebel set out to paint a portrait of every firefighter lost on that fateful day. More than 3000 hours were spent over six years to create the paintings, beginning with cutting and burning the 4 x 6 inch blocks of Baltic birch on which the portraits are painted. Using oils, each image was painstakingly rendered in black, white and raw umber onto the charred wood. Seibel has credited the National Fallen Firefighter s Foundation, whose mission is to memorialize fallen firefighters and support their families and co-workers in rebuilding their lives. Since 2009, the Foundation has been the artist s link to the fire community and an invaluable partner in bringing better angels to the public. Seibel said, I am forever indebted to them for their friendship and support. Through them I have now met hundreds of firefighters. better angels was first presented to the public in June 2011, followed by a ten-city tour across the United States in 2011 and Venues included a special exhibit in the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C., and the World Financial Center in New York, across the street from Ground Zero. In her artist statement for the exhibit, Siebel is quoted as saying, These 343 firemen represent New York, the FDNY, their selfless profession, and also in the way of heroes the possibility that each of us may rise to the better angels of our own nature. The museum, located at 21 Edwards Street in Springfield, is open Tuesday Saturday 10 5, Sunday 11 5, and closed on Mondays. 6
