2 Prof. Alexander Slocum s keynote speech: Going Deep - Beyond Macondo Abstract: Before the Deepwater Horizon incident, there was Ixtoq (Gulf of Mexico) and Bravo (North Sea); and after Deepwater Horizon, there will be incidents in the future. Such is the nature and history of technology, particularly in the energy business. So we better get ready now, so the next time a well blows, we can shut off the flow fast! Fortunately the sequence of events for the Deepwater Horizon incident was well covered by The New York Times, for example. However, there were many machines designed, built, and made ready, but were not deployed and were not covered by the press because (fortunately) other things worked. There were also very promising ideas developed on paper but still need to be built tested. These machines and ideas could be invaluable for the next incident, but a structure is now needed to advance them. Perhaps even more importantly, how should industry organize itself so the offshore drilling ban can be lifted ASAP before the industry withers/is forced to abandon the US? Perhaps the hydrocarbon industry needs a SEMATECH type organization that can peer review ideas and develop pre-competitive technologies without worrying about antitrust issues. We can have our sports cars and drive them too: We know this because history has shown us that engineering is a blend of science and statistics with which managers and politicians paint our future. Yet because we are all responsible for the canvas of life, we can hang up a beautiful picture of the future, or we can hang ourselves through complacency. MIT s 150th Anniversary Event, Berlin

3 Heinz Gaub s presentation: Innovation Market Access Standardization Abstract: Standardization is typically seen as a necessary but bureaucratic and cumbersome process that in its worst format can block innovation and creativity. Standards are often understood as being equal to mandatory regulation documents, and standardization organizations are viewed as state institutions of national administrations. However, DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung, as many national standardization bodies, is presented as a privately organized not-for-profit business, set up as a professional service provider in standardization for companies in industry, trade and services as well as for public authorities, academia, science and nongovernmental organizations. In Germany, standardization is set-up strategically as described in the German Standardization Strategy in its 2010 version. The German federal government has adopted its Standardization Policy Concept in 2009, and several industry associations, namely the BDI Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie have formulated their standardization policies and strategies. Standards, specifications and other technical rules play a key role in innovation processes reaching from fundamental research through applied research to innovative product development and can provide a powerful tool in opening international markets for innovations, e.g. for electrically driven automobiles. German Companies and the federal government have started in 2006 to specifically fund standardization projects in support of innovation diffusion and to provide efficient international market access for innovative product, process and service developments. Several funding programs are discussed as well as new standardization deliverables specifically designed for fast moving innovation processes. Finally, methods for assessing the economic benefits of standardization are introduced, both on a national economic level as well as along the line of value adding processes in industry businesses. 4 MIT Professor Alexander Slocum Professor of Mechanical Engineering Alexander Slocum is the Pappalardo Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, a MacVicar Faculty Teaching Fellow, and a Fellow of the ASME. He has six dozen+ US patents issued/pending, and has helped develop 12 products that have been awarded R&D 100 awards. Alex was the Massachusetts Professor of the Year in 2000, and is the recipient of the Society of Manufacturing Engineer s Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal, and the ASME Leonardo davinci and Machine Design Award. His current interests focus on the development of precision machines from medical devices and instruments to renewable energy harvesting and storage machines. Recently he served on the DoE Science Team working on the Gulf Oil Spill. Since high school days, Alex has had a passion for furniture making and carpentry. Alex also loves sports from SCUBA to snowboarding to iron-distance triathlons and marathons. 5 Heinz Gaub, MIT SM 92 Member of the Management Board DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung e.v. Heinz Gaub studied Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University Berlin, specializing in production engineering. He then went on to obtain his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from MIT. Following this, he was a research scientist at both universities for three years. He then worked in industry for 15 years, first becoming Managing Director of K. JUNG GmbH, a manufacturer of precision machine tools in Göppingen (Baden-Württemberg), then a Member of the Management Board of Willy Vogel AG in Berlin, the world leader in the field of lubrication technology for machinery, plant, trucks and railway vehicles. Since May 2007 he has been a Member of the Management Board of DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung e. V. (the German Institute for Standardization), responsible for the Standards and Information Technology divisions as well as for the subsidiary company DIN Software GmbH. Alongside his work at DIN, Heinz Gaub is also a member of the Supervisory Board of Bogen Electronic GmbH in Berlin and a member of the "Transfer Alliance" initiated by the Berlin Senator for Economics, Technology and Women s Issues. He also holds a lectureship on strategic standardization at the Technical University Berlin s business school and is a MIT s 150th Anniversary Event, Berlin

6 coauthor of the eighth edition of Pahl/Beitz Konstruktionslehre ("Engineering Design"), to be published by Springer Verlag in Heinz has a passion for Italian sports cars of the 50s and 60s, both driving and restoring them.
