Members of the Board of Directors of Brunei Shell Petroleum, Brunei LNG, Brunei Shell Tankers and Brunei Shell Marketing, Pengiran-Pengiran, Dato-Dato, Datin-Datin Permanent Secretaries, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, Good evening. On behalf of all four Brunei Shell joint venture companies, I am deeply honoured to welcome Yang Berhormat Pehin Yasmin, our Guest of Honour, on tonight s Emblem Dinner. Thank you Yang Berhormat Pehin for your presence and support, on this very special evening. Tonight, I will have the privilege of congratulating our 263 Emblem recipients from Brunei Shell Petroleum, Brunei LNG, Brunei Shell Tankers and Brunei Shell Marketing with this year s emblem awards. Before we proceed, I would like to observe a moment of silence in remembrance of all the victims of the recent natural disasters. Our hearts and prayers particularly go out to Japan, our old friend and ally, who are facing one of the greatest crises a country could ever face. Now please join me in one minute s silence and prayer. (1 minute moment of silence) 1

2 I was grateful to learn that our BLNG and BST staff are safe in Japan and our LNG tankers were safely docked in Tokyo Bay and Osaka Bay on that fateful day. We will definitely keep monitoring this situation closely. This evening is an occasion to mark our employees contributions, let us look back at how we have progressed in leaps and bounds, and look ahead with plans to manage the challenges to come. Our emblem recipients tonight have more than 7,300 years of service and experience between them, contributing to make the Brunei Shell Joint Venture Companies truly world-class. We are all immensely proud of your achievements and grateful to you and your families. Let s look back, appreciate and celebrate all the accomplishments, the challenges that taught you important lessons and the milestones that you have successfully achieved. Let s acknowledge, all the memories and our experiences that have shaped us today. Let s recall your first day at work, your first trip to offshore or even your first day to the Training Centre. On every single person s first day, they make the decision to work to create a better future for themselves and their family. That is why the core value of Brunei Shell is care for people and ensuring that everyone goes home safe every day. In order to do that, we must take heed of the lessons learnt from past incidents, we need to study why it happened, how it happened and ensure it won t happen again. The question we must ask ourselves each and every day is what do I need to do to make a difference before an incident happens as opposed to arriving after the incident to deal with impact. It is our duty and responsibility to ensure safe work with no harm to people or the environment. Whether you arrive home from a Sikorsky S-92A or a crew change boat or staff bus or your own car, you create that better future by coming home safe. Over the great years of your careers, we have experienced the inevitable technological evolution which mandated us to learn and up skill ourselves. For example, the arrival of the big mainframe computers in the BSP Head Office in the 80s, that led to the phasing out of typewriters. 2

3 We have progressed far and beyond that in the last 35, 30 and 25 years. Now we are working on personal computers, conduct meetings using visual facilities and even control the offshore valves from the computers onshore. And last week, I realized how behind the times I am watching Pehin Yasmin give a speech from his ipad. Further, we have deployed new technologies from conventional drilling to innovative fish-hook drilling. We have set a world record in drilling and completing the well at an angle of 141 degrees! We also discovered new oil in the deepwater Geronggong field, approximately 100km offshore where water depth is approximately 1000m. This is the deepest water depth in which BSP has discovered hydrocarbons in Bruneian acreage. These successes pose new challenges and opportunities. It also reflects that we have entered a different playing field. In order to keep up with production targets and Brunei s energy strategy, we need more innovative ways to explore and produce hydrocarbons. For example, new expertise is required to undertake the unconventional drilling of deeper wells and higher pressure and deepwater business. We need to acknowledge this needs different skills and greater creativity from our people. There are a number of success factors that contributed to our achievements last year and beyond. The most important being people. You. Us. We work as one big team. We collaborate and integrate across all businesses and disciplines. We share the problems, we share the issues and we also share the solutions to go forward, and deliver our goals. We could not have achieved the significant delivery of the Selangkir Iron Duke platform without people s dedication to deliver their very best. SKID has been ranked a best in class performance, both on cost and schedule, against global benchmarks in Shell and across the industry. With this go-getter spirit and behaviours, today we lead the Shell world in the collaborative work environment. We pioneered the Production Optimisation Collaborative Centre (POCC) when we developed the Champion West Smart Field about five years ago. In fact, this model has been replicated and enhanced in the set up of the Darat Optimisation Collaborative Centre (DOCC). 3

4 With BLNG, we continue to be ranked as one of the top quartile performing LNG plants worldwide. We have set the pace in safety, plant availability, reliability and cost for three consecutive years. Our B-class vessels have maintained its safe operations and continue to deliver LNG to our customers in Japan and Korea. Now with the delivery of the new A- class vessel, Arkat, together with BGC we now have two vessels in our A-class fleet. On the oil products marketing front, we have provided healthier returns to the overall business by strengthening our frontline activities for sales and marketing. We are also putting more effort into building a strong foundation for growth mainly around the Muara depot and our operations. We should never forget every car in Brunei is powered by our products. Rest assured, we will continue to deploy technologies to unlock more opportunities and improve our business performance. Therefore, talent management and staff development are equally important to keep up with these technologies. We need to sharpen and polish the skill of our people, we need to inspire them, we need to energise them and we also need to be inclusive when addressing business issues. All in all, you can be proud of it was an excellent business performance for us in Your hard work and this excellent performance have also enabled us as one big company to contribute to the nation. It has given us the opportunity to build relationship and work closely with the local community. As a long-time supporter of the Brunei Government s national agenda, we are aligning our business activities to ensure it is supporting Brunei Darussalam s long term development plan and have embedded some of the eight strategies as laid out in the Outline of Strategies and Polices for Development, such as education, environment, local business development and social security and development as the thrusts to our community development programmes. For example, in education, we have contributed actively in science education at the secondary level and at higher institutions. We also provided best 4

5 students award in communities close to our operations to encourage them to strive for academic excellence. We have sponsored the Petroleum Engineering and Chemical Engineering undergraduate courses at the Institute of Technology Brunei and have recently sponsored Universiti Brunei Darussalam in the implementation of a diploma, with undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Occupational Health and Medicine. As part of our contributions to those less fortunate than ourselves, we launched the Brunei Learning and Excellent Students Scheme (BLESS) to ensure talented underprivileged students will continue to excel in their studies and increase their chances of obtaining professional qualifications. This year, I am looking forward to the first ever participation of Brunei schools to the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia which will take place in the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia. This is a competition where the teams must build and race an innovative eco-friendly and energy saving car. As you may be aware, cities and towns across the world will be turning off their lights for Earth Hour. It is particularly important for us as an energy company to walk the talk. I am proud to say the BSJV Companies will be a part of this initiative and will be switching off all non essential lights in and around offices and facilities in over 11 BSJV locations across Brunei. And here tonight, we will be supporting this global event by switching the lights off for six minutes at 8:30pm and we will keep the lights dim for an hour. When the lights do come back on, please take a moment to think about what we can do and change to help benefit the earth. And as Pehin Yasmin remarked in the paper this morning, this is not about a once a year event this is about what we can do to work on this every month, every week and every day. These are just some of the highlights of the Brunei Shell Joint Venture companies, none of which would be achievable without the strength and passion of the people working in these great companies. Once again, I am extremely proud and grateful to be a part of the Brunei Shell Joint Venture family, and to join you and your family in celebrating our 5

6 Emblem recipients tonight. I thank you for your immense contribution and congratulate you all on this outstanding achievement. With the dynamic teams we have in all organizations, together with inputs from our shareholders, I am certain we can leverage on our strengths to help us achieve our goals. It is the people in this room plus others that help us create lasting results. Without their tireless efforts throughout the years, we would not have been able to accomplish the great successes that we have had in the past year. Lastly and most importantly, let us all thank our families who have been behind us all these years. Their unconditional support, understanding, love and care should not be underestimated and left unappreciated. They have become our driving and inspirational factor to endure the hard times and rejoice the good times. This night is about recognising our Emblem recipients and it is also about recognising how each and every one of you who have contributed, in your own way, in helping the Brunei Shell Joint Venture Companies achieve greater heights. I believe that you should be proud of the honour you receive tonight and what you have done to deserve it, and you should be especially proud of the difference you have made over the last 35/30/25 years. We must always remember that it is ultimately our people who deliver success. Thank you again for coming tonight, for listening and have a wonderful evening. Together everyone achieves more.
