Chartered 13 August 1980 Meeting: The Singapore Cricket Club, Every Tuesday 1245pm RI Calendar / OCTOBER: Vocational Service Month Bulletin Issue 15 / Oct 2013 Lunch Meeting on 22 nd Oct 2013 The main star of this lunch meeting was Vice Pres Thomas Graf who chaired the meeting as well as delivering a vocational talk of Private Banking in Singapore Among the visitors was Rtn Galena Gusarevich from RC Queenstown She originally hails from Vladivostok, Russia and currently works in Singapore Part of her interesting personal history was her experience as a former Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar & Rotaract Club president She promises to return to RCRC to address us on her perspective on this PP Aaron Tan led the toast to Rotary International VP Thomas was doing his bit in observation of October being Vocational Service Month in our Rotary calendar His discourse about his industry in Singapore was a distinctly personal account of his own journey as a credit officer at UBS in Zurich, May 1995 to Hong Kong as private banker and onwards to his current place in Singapore As it relates to Rotary, members would know that VP Thomas was a member in RC Peninsula, our sister club in Hong Kong and naturally joining RCRC in 2008 with his relocation to our garden city Through the years, UBS private banking business has shifted from HK as a centre to the rising significance of Singapore where the UBS staff of 30 in the mid 90s as grown to 1,500 today When VP Thomas started his Asian career as a client advisor, 90% of his portfolio was booked in Switzerland meaning clients accounts were based in Switzerland whilst being advised locally in HK or Singapore Recently published UBS figures have more than 95% of assets are now booked in Asia of which two thirds are in Singapore Three factors were mentioned to attribute this change; namely (1) Asian wealthy individuals prefer their money to stay close; (2) Singapore s political stability; (3) quality advice capability & execution has improved significantly A recent PwC Global Private Bank & Wealth Management Survey predict Singapore to become the most attractive international finance centre in terms of ability to attract private client assets in the coming years This is not too surprising as a circle of about 5-6 flying hours around Singapore encompasses half of the world s population with fast growth from the giants of China, India and a number of significant emerging markets The only dark cloud is the anticipated lack of enough professionals to manage the expected volumes VP Thomas positively takes it as a Rotary vocational initiative we can do to attract our young school leavers to join the financial industry
The recent Rotary Flag Day event which took place on 19 Oct 2013 was announced to members and it was agreed that this lunch meeting s Sunshine Box contribution will be dedicated towards the collection by RCRC volunteers Collection amounted to $220 with an additional $100 pledge to be added from Pres Jeffrey Chan making it a total of $320 Attendance for this meeting was 19 members and 4 guests Photos of meeting on 22 Oct 2013 VP Thomas Graf with Rtn Galena Gusarevich & addressing meeting PP Aaron Tan leading toast to Rotary International
President s Column PRESIDENT S BLOG Week of 21 OCTOBER 2013 Dear Members, As a club we had a very successful and enjoyable Rotary Flag day last Saturday, 19 October 2013 A fair number of our members and spouses, together with around 70 Interactors and Rotaractors as well as friends of our club stationed ourselves in the Marine Parade Central area to sell stickers and collect funds for the Foundation of Rotary Clubs of Singapore This was more than a fund raising event It was also a club bonding and fellowship event It was most heartening for many of us to see so many of our newer members participate This is surely a good sign for our club Counting just the dollar notes, our club raised the third highest amount When the coins are counted and also the donations collected as sunshine during the meeting on 22 October, we are confident that RCRC s collection will be among the highest This event encapsulates the most important aspect of Rotary Rotary is not just about helping others through giving or raising money It also about doing things together as Rotarians and families of Rotarians Rotary is meant to be hands-on, with Rotarians working with other Rotarians in fellowship for a good cause The image of Rotarians, who are all senior people, doing this provides good role models for your young such as our Interactors and Rotaractors and can encourage them to aspire themselves to be Rotarians in due course This is where RCRC can do better We have the core of members who give their time, energy as well as treasure, for good causes But there are many more in our club who can join in We look forward to more or our members applying energies and skills in fellowship with other members for the good causes supported by Raffles City Jeffrey Chan President, R C of Raffles City
Members Column PP Jimmy Daruwalla Safari photographs PP Jimmy & spouse Jothy recently went for a safari trip in Kenya We started with a pair of regal lions in the last bulletin Posted is a timely shot of an elephant s output Events Report (Photo by Dr Jimmy Daruwalla) Oktoberfest & Rotary Fund Raising event; 17 Oct 2013 Luis, Aaron and I had a great evening at the Oktoberfest event, held at Brotzeit Restaurant, Vivo City on Oct 17 It was a night of great food, entertainment and good fellowship with RC Queenstown members The boss of the Restaurant chain, Mr Franz Lanthaler, a RC Queenstown Rotarian himself, was a great host that night The Oktoberfest band from Austria, Anton and the Funny Guys entertained us well with
great music and dance This gathering was organised by Luis with Franz who had generously subsidized the evening Net proceeds went to support the scholarship application for Ms Lam Wan Yee a young and promising young Singapore student, with an outstanding academic track record, wishing to take up a masters study of science in Environmental Engineering with specialization in Urban Water Management & Ecological Systems Design & Waste Management at the renowned Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich Her live long goal is in resolving the world environmental problem through engineering solution which clearly aligns with the Mission of Rotary Foundation Report by Rtn Judy Tan Note: RCRC members paid 600 SGD of which 450 SGD went to support the scholarship of the lady going to Switzerland for her masters Contributions were made by Vincent Chen, Thomas Graf, Jimmy Daruwalla, Judy Tan, Aaron Tan and Luis Coronado 2013 Rotary Flag Day; 19 Oct 2013 The 2013 Flag Day is finally over We wish to place on record our sincere thanks to all clubs and everyone who took part On Saturday about 15 volunteers stayed until 12 midnight to count the notes A special thanks to all of you They all agreed that it was an enjoyable evening well spent
A special mention must be made for Rtn Mee Lee and Ms Lynn Lee who supervised the counting as auditors We are really touched by Lynn's contribution Half way through the counting she received a phone call that her son had fallen ill Despite that, she continued with us right to the end You may wish to note that she is not even a Rotarian Thanks Lynn! We have collected in Cash at total of $14,367 Champion Club is the Rotary Club of Suntec City with a collection of $2,933 followed by RC Tanglin ($1,862) Third in ranking: RC Raffles City ($1,750) followed by RC Singapore ($1,000, with a last minute contribution from AG Dr Yap Lip Kee) RC Queenstown collected $91700 The coins will be sent to Singapore Mint for counting When the full result is know I will inform all of you I will continue to keep you updated Once again a big thank you to everyone Report by PDG Fong Hoe Beng

A total of 73 Interactors & Rotaractors turned up together with 13 Rotarians including Jeffrey s wife Susan & my friend Johnny Wee God was kind to us as the weather was nice & cool with a couple of short showers of rain to cool things down! A big thank you to all who turned up with special credit to Koon San, Russi, Luis, Mark, Judy, Mohit & Judy who walked the streets to collect flag donations Special thanks to Aaron & Ron who assisted me with the admin & supervision of all the volunteers and Aaron & Mohit for escorting me back to the Rotary HQ at Chinatown Point to open up the bags for counting I must say that our collection was one of the best for the whole of Singapore despite the fact that we did not have the MRT station crowd Report by PP Eugene Lim District Vocational Seminar, 26 Oct 2013 Participants from RCRC to the District Vocational Seminar: AG Johnson; Pres Jeffrey, PP Steven, Rtn Judy and potential member Jacky Wong, This was the largest DVS in Dist 3310 for this year, There were 122 participant from all the Rotary Clubs in Singapore This is a record for the yearly DVD Report by Pres Jeffrey Chan
