1 RY Bulletin Issue No.10 Chartered 13 August 1980 Rotary International Calendar : September is New Generations Month Lunch Meeting on Tuesday, 9 September 2014 We were honoured by several guests that AG Johnson welcomed to the meeting. President Ong Chee Wee from the Rotary E-Club of Singapore, then our speaker Mr Cheng Tai Chin the Deputy Director of the Office of the Public Guardian, Ms Swee Hin Wong of SKF, a guest of PP Russi and PP Ed. Mijares Rotary Club of Makati North. PP Russi was then invited by President Corina to propose a toast to Rotary International. After which PP Mohan took the podium as Sergeant at Arms to entertain us by raising a few dollars for the Sunshine Box with an almost impeccable performance assisted by his substitute 'beautiful' assistant PP Aaron. President Corina followed asking for more photos of any Rotarians children or grandchildren with the moon cake festival lanterns which she had kindly donated. PP Ed. Mijares Rotary Club of Makati North expressed his thanks and relief that the initial prognosis following his sons operation was positive and appeared successful. l. 2 It was then the turn of Rtn Jacky Wong to share with the club details of the World Golfers Championship at Sentosa where Jacky's company has generously sponsored a fabulous Lotus sports car as a hole in one prize. Jacky invited any interested Rotarians to compete explaining flights were available for $288 contribution which will be donated to RCRC sunshine box. He further explained that he has placed extensive half page adverts in the business times promoting the event along with the Rotary motif banner. P. Ong Chee Wee of the Rotary E Club of Singapore then took the floor to update us on his missions: FRC in conjunction with the ITE College East is organising a charity run for Foundation with 62 clubs taking part. Video competition Island wide eye screening taking place on for all 21 clubs on 22nd Sept. Marina Mandarin dinner for FRCS on 30th September 2014 any corporate sponsorship or support most welcome. 3 PP Jeffrey introduced our speaker for the day Mr Cheng Tai Chin the Deputy Director of the Office of the Public Guardian which is part of the Ministry of Social and Family Development. Mr Cheng first showed a short video to illustrate the need for safe and simplified procedures for Lasting Power of Attorney. This service is aimed primarily at the aging and elderly along with their relatives and close carers. He went on to explain that LPA is a simple legal document which allows a 'Doner' to voluntarily appoint one or more persons 'Donee(s)', to make decisions and act on his behalf as his proxy decision maker if he should lose mental capacity one day. A donee(s) can be appointed to act in two broad areas: personal welfare as well as property & affairs matters. To encourage more Singaporeans to plan ahead with an LPA to protect their interests, the Office of the Public Guardian reviewed the existing LPA Forms and introduced the revised LPA forms which were effective from 1 September The revised forms use less legal and technical jargon, making them easier to understand. Information was streamlined and rarely used provisions removed from the forms. The LPA allows you to protect your interests by indicating your personal, considered choice of a proxy decision maker - someone you trust to be reliable, competent and capable - to make decisions and act on your behalf should you become vulnerable when you lose the mental capacity to make your own decisions one day. Anyone wishing to learn more about this area which could in time affect most of us could visit the Public Guardian Web site for further information. Following questions from PP Jeffrey, Koon San, Jimmy D and Siew Joon it was Rotarian Dr William Wong gave the note of thanks. All having enjoyed a splendid lunch including the SCC signature chicken curry along with a fusion of roast beef and vegetable tikka, it was left to PP Jeffrey to call the meeting to a close.
