amazing, wacky, bright For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother s womb. Psalm 139:13 NIV When you are right in the middle of your adolescent years, one of the biggest questions that will influence your mind, attitude and decision-making is, Who am I? When you re a child, you don t think too much about who you are. You accept that you re a part of a family, have certain interests, you are in social groups, a class at school. Much of your identity, however who you really are is wrapped up in your day-to-day life and activities. When it comes time for your teen years, you will most likely begin to ask questions like, This is all perfectly normal, but it can certainly lead to some feelings of anxiety and uncertainty as to where you fit in. Pretty much every teen feels this sense of questioning at some point they are perfectly normal feelings to have. The truth is, you were created as a unique and amazing person, capable of a wonderful and amazing future. You are totally unique there s not a single person in the entire universe exactly like you, and that makes you pretty special! 2 You are totally YOU!
That is incredible and something to be really proud of. I know you may not always feel this way. You actually might feel pretty Blaah sometimes, but it is true. It may take you some time to totally get this and to understand who you really are, and what makes you the person you are. You are not who society says you ought to be. You are not merely who your parents want you to be, or your friends expect you to be. You are quite simply a unique person. There has never been another you, and that s a good thing. one// who am I? the Molly in me There were two versions of me at one stage when I was growing up, all because of a TV show I adored. The show a soapie called A Country Practice was very popular. Leading the way was one of the stars, Molly. She was a confident, gorgeous woman who stood up for what she believed in. She dressed in bright colours and wore amazing, wacky, bright outfits. Molly, the character, eventually died. That episode was watched by millions of Australians, sitting glued to their TVs to watch a cherished character fade from our screens for eternity. In front of one telly screen was me, tears rolling down, thinking how much I wanted to be Molly. The truth is, there is only one you on the whole face of the earth how incredible is that? Being created as a unique and amazing individual actually lets you off the hook straight away. You don t have to try and be anybody else but yourself. The media constantly parades images before us, telling us what we should look like and how we should act as teenagers. We end up all becoming lookalikes of each other. How boring is that? That girl I loved on TV Molly affected my dress sense, big time! I remember conning my Nanna into making me a copy of a bright jumpsuit that Molly wore. I even put Molly s bright clips in my hair. (The mental images frighten me to this day!) >>> 3
Life always seemed better after Russell had slipped into his Kelvin suit... Sure, I went around dressed as Molly for a while, but it wasn t the real me. I was just trying to copy someone else I admired. Trends and fashions may come and go, but don t just buy something or wear an outfit because you are trying to be something you are not. You just end up being very uncomfortable because you re not being real to yourself. Take some time to get to know the real you during your teen years. Discover what things make you passionate and give you the most joy. What sports and hobbies do you enjoy? What gives you energy? And what gets you down? For some people (like me!) you may be in your 30s before you truly understand that who you are is enough. 4 Understand that you have been created to be a wonderful and amazing person, and you have your whole life to get to know the real you, and to allow others to also get to know you and love you. Try to resist going along with the crowd. It can be better to go with what you feel most comfortable with, and discover the real you!
by Kate Neely one// who am I? Make a wish upon an eyelash. Kiss a butterfly. Run barefoot over sandy beaches. Blow dandelion seeds into the sky. Make a statement loud and clear. Say what s on your mind. Wear whatever you want to wear. Show the world you re undefined. Run and play with wild horses. Let your hair fly free. Be confident. Express yourself. Let no one tell you who to be. Practise karate on a trampoline. Be wild and dye your hair. Laugh and sing at the top of your lungs. Spread smiles everywhere. Show everyone your fearless self. Now s your time to shine. Don t fear at all what others think. Just paint your own design. 5
By Catherine Bradley When I was in late primary school, I didn t really like my class. The people in it weren t really the people that I wanted to influence my life. So I started to hang out with some of the guys in the younger grades. I enjoyed playing soccer with the younger boys, because I enjoy sports. When I hit my first year of high school, my friends were left down at the primary school. I didn t really enjoy talking about fashion, makeup and boys; sitting down and talking on the lawn at lunchtime with the girls. I would much rather go and play a sport and be active. All the boys in the other years were all older than me, and I thought that if I hung out with them, my friends might think that I really liked some of them. I was a bit of a loner in Year 7. But one day, one of the Year 8 boys asked me if I wanted to play downball with them. Some people might say that downball is a game for nerds, but I don t agree. At first, it was a bit awkward, but after a while, I got better and it became much more fun. From then on, I have always played downball, even until now. 6 Most girls think that if you hang out with boys, you must like them, but that isn t the case. Guys don t mind if you play with them. If you re happy that s the main thing. Now, a lot of my friends are guys, and there s nothing wrong with that at all.
anonymous one// who am I? 7
anonymous Some people can be really pretty on the outside, but on the inside they could be really mean or not nice at all. Someone once gave me an example and it goes a bit like this: You can pick up an apple and it can look really juicy and tasty. Then you take a bite out of it and it could be the worst apple you have ever tasted. It could be rotten and really disgusting. I think that s a bit like people. You see them at a glance, but it s not until you actually get to know them that you discover what type of person they are. I think that by saying, on the inside, they mean it is what is in your soul and heart that matters most and who you are as a person. You never know what s going on behind that perfect façade. Some people can seem like they have it all, but they could have heaps of problems going on in their lives, like family problems, issues with friends and lots more. It s not about outer beauty. It s about inner beauty! 8
one// who am I? By Beautiful When I was younger, I had braces, glasses, a hearing aid (that I thankfully do not need any more) and I was overweight! My self-esteem was really low. Even when I ditched my hearing aid, my braces were taken off and I got contact lenses. I still felt ugly. But I m now feeling more beautiful than I ve ever felt. I now know to think more about the things I m good at rather than the things I don t like about myself. If I continue to do this, I think I will push all the negativity out and the others will see that too. Then I can help others with low self-esteem to think more positively about themselves! 9
To be nobody but yourself in a world that s doing its best to make you somebody else is to fight the hardest battle you are ever going to fight. Never stop fighting. E. E. Cummings To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance. Oscar Wilde 10
