3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The passenger records, West Indian passports, citizenry registers and vendor pass registrations described in this finding aid were created as part of the administrative and governmental colonial records maintained by Denmark during its colonization period of the Danish West Indies ( for St. Thomas, for St. John, and for St. Croix). The original records are in the custody of the Rigsarkivet (Danish National Archives). They were preserved at an unknown date prior to 1980 on 25 reels of 35 mm microfilm. A service copy of the 25-reel microfilm set was held by the von Scholten Collection of Enid M. Baa Public Library in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands and was actively used by researchers for many years. During a prolonged period when air conditioning was unavailable for the microfilm collection post-hurricane Hugo (September 1989), the entire collection was irreparably damaged. In response to a 2009 request from the Caribbean Genealogy Library and the Territorial Archives to purchase replacements for the microfilm service copies, the Rigsarkivet digitized the images in TIFF format from its master copy of the earlier microfilm and produced at its own expense a collection of 34 DVD-R discs as a gift from the Danish National Archives to the USVI. The DVD collection was received by the Territorial Archives via mail by on October 14, From October 25-29, 2010, service copies of the DVD collection were prepared to promote increased access to the intellectual content. The master DVD collection copy was retained by the Territorial Archives and a service copy was distributed on DVD+R to each of the following repositories on or about February 24, 2011: Von Scholten Collection at Enid M. Baa Public Library, St. Thomas, USVI Caribbean Genealogy Library, Al Cohen s Plaza, Raphune Hill, St. Thomas, USVI Territorial Archives at Florence Williams Public Library, Christiansted, St. Croix, USVI Whim Research Library and Archives, St. Croix Landmarks Society, St. Croix, USVI Special Collections at Elaine Ione Sprauve Public Library, St. John, USVI Sociedad Puertorriqueña de Genealogía, Universidad Interamericana de Hato Rey, Puerto Rico Archives and Records Management Unit of the Deputy Governor's Office, Road Town, Tortola, BVI ACKNOWLEDGMENTS PAGE i

4 Over the next several months a Finding Aid was prepared by Territorial Coordinator for Archives Susan Laura Lugo and the first edition was produced in February Each repository received one service copy set of the DVD collection and two print-outs of the finding aid. It is expected that the finding aid will also be made accessible electronically to the public through the Territorial Archives website. The Territorial Archives gratefully acknowledges the generosity of the Rigsarkivet (Danish National Archives), and is especially grateful to Danish National Archivist Asbjørn Hellum for his support to improve accessibility to these records by a wider audience of researchers.
