Family History Indexes from sources at the Public Record Office by Stuart Tamblin RG 4 NON-CONFORMIST REGISTERS
S t u a r t T a m b l i n RG 4 NON-CONFORMIST REGISTERS EVERTON NECROPOLIS Volume Published by Family History Indexes, Northampton, England, 2000
Introduction Everton Necropolis In 1837 and again in 1857, registers not relating to Church of England parishes had to be surrendered to the Non-Parochial Registers Commission and 4,680 volumes dating back to 1567 are now in the custody of the Public Record Office (PRO) in Class RG 4. Various PRO Readers' Guides and handbooks detail these non-conformist records and mention a small number of burial grounds but it seems that they are mostly in London, are well-known and have been indexed. Less well-known, it seems, are the records of Everton Necropolis in piece RG 4/3121. This index comprises copies of the entries starting at the beginning of the register in February 1825 and is supplied sorted alphabetically by surname and forename. Fields used relate to the original column headings.
Source material 1) The original registers are accessible only as microfilm copies but these are available at both the PRO main building at Kew and at the Family Records Centre (FRC) in central London. This appears at the beginning of the document: PRO: RG 4/3121 Interments Burial Ground called Necropolis or Low-Hill General Cemetery All denominations situate in the township of Everton, Liverpool founded in the year This is the Register directed by the Committee of the Low Hill General Cemetery to be kept with the greatest possible exactness and care, of every interment to be made in the said cemetery and the Registrar is hereby requested to be careful to make in his own hand writing (or in case of illness, or unavoidable absence, to have made and properly signed by the parties so making on his behalf) a full and correct entry of all such interments, and of all particulars required to be registered, on the day of such interments respectively taking place; it being the express wish of the Committee that no entry should, under any circumstances whatever, be delayed to a future day. By desire of the Committee Geo M Woolsey, Chairman Liverpool Feb 1st Christopher Hird Jones Secretary
2) A copy was made in the nineteenth century and is deposited at the Liverpool Record Office (LRO) under reference 352 CEM 2/2/1. This is available worldwide on microfilm at Family History Centres of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) under call number This appears at the beginning of the document: LRO: 352 CEM 2/2/1 Necropolis Cemetery Low Hill Burial Register We have carefully compared this Transcript with the Original Copy of the Register of Interments entrusted to the care of the Registration Commissioners, and do certify that it is a true and faithful copy. John Bruce Thomas Malkin Registrar Copyist Necropolis, March 1837 Both sources have been used to compile this publication, although full cross-checking was thought to be unnecessary, given the positive attitude of those concerned above. However, it was found that the microfilm consulted of the copy register (LDS ) did omit the double page of Running Numbers 1114 to 1187 (November to December 1827). The entries in the registers appear thirty-seven to a page. This database has been compiled primarily as a finding aid for family historians. As such, the grave number, the street number in the address and the title of the officiating minister have all been omitted. They are all available on the microfilms. Also, the address has sometimes been abbreviated or standardised to improve clarity, with some obvious errors in the original being corrected.
Relevant Records outside the PRO LDS Call number has the register of graves with index, (Item 1 on the film relates to another cemetery.) Item 2 on the film (LRO: 352 CEM 2/3/1, filmed 18 Jan 1990) contains a far from complete alphabetical listing of grave owners and then a numerical register of the graves up to number For example: Burial Number JOHNSON Richard James Samuel Hannah Robert John BUTLER Elizabeth Butler Grace Ferris Butler Elizabeth Ferres Butler Elizabeth Ferres Butler John Butler Louisa B Burley Thomas Burley Item 3 on the film is part two of the Register of Graves, , numbers 4300 to LDS Call number contains the burial register, LDS Call number is the burial register, LDS Call number is the burial register, LDS Call number is the burial register, with an index, {This publication is intended to fill the gap from 1825 to 1833.} There are also Day Books and Order Books - see the LDS Family History Library Catalog for further details. LRO references are: 352 CEM 2/1/1 to 7; 352 CEM 2/2/1 to 6; 352 CEM 2/3/1 to 3 and 352 CEM 2/4/1 to 9.
Acknowledgments As multiple religions are associated with the burial register, it has been impossible to identify the current copyright holder. It is generally accepted under UK law that where the identification of the copyright owner is difficult or impossible, material more than 150 years old may be reproduced without formal permission. Any extracts from or references to this publication should please make full reference to Stuart Tamblin as compiler and indexer and to Family History Indexes as publisher.
