4 Page 4 February Years!! Willamette Valley Genealogical Society Celebrates 50 Years In 1967 eleven people met around a table in Erma Lee Brown s house to discuss forming a local genealogical society. By February of 1969, more than 80 people signed up to be charter members, officially forming the Willamette Valley Genealogical Society. In the first years, the society met in various places around town, but still participated in the Oregon State Fair, put on workshops, and began publishing a quarterly bulletin named Beaver Briefs. February 5, 1969 The Capitol Journal We have been at Salem Public Library twice and the Oregon State Library for 26 years. We have kept up with the digital age and expanded our free volunteer service, as well as continued with interesting programs, publishing local records, monthly newsletters and a quarterly Bulletin and providing a research service. A complete history of our society over the fifty Years is on our website. We had a wonderful celebration at our January meeting, thanks to Program VP Doug Crosby. We were happy to have charter members Claudine Shaw and Patricia Bissell attend our party. Pat Bissell has been a WVGS for all fifty years. Thanks to all our members who have made this possible! Statesman Journal reporter Capi Lynn wrote a wonderful article for the newspaper, appearing on January 13th, Here is a link to her article: WVGS President Liz Tice and 50-year member Pat Bissell Former society librarian Jim Willhite and current librarian Deanne Smith
5 February 2019 Page 5 Books Online FamilySearch will be scanning some of Willamette Valley Genealogical Society s books. These will eventually be on the FamilySearch.org website. Volunteers from the LDS will be working at Salem Public Library on this project. In exchange, WVGS will receive a digital copy of all materials scanned. FamilySearch Online Book Collection There are two ways to access Family History Books from FamilySearch.org: Through the Books page. Go to and hover over the Search tab. Click on Books. You can also browse directly to books.familysearch.org Type in your search criteria in the search box. These are the benefits of using the Books tab to access Family History Books; only books available online show up in the search and the search can be filtered by using the left hand menu. The potential problems with using the Books tab to access Family History Books are that the search within books does not differentiate between books that are currently online and those that are scheduled to be made available online. Books that are not yet online generate an error message and cannot be opened. Through the FamilySearch Catalog. Click on the Catalog tab of the familysearch.org website. Click Titles from the menu. If you do not know the title of the book, you can also search by Keyword. Enter search criteria in the title of keyword box. When the Search Results display, click on the title you want. The Book details page opens. Click on the link to go to the digital book. The status of the book determines whether or not, it can be viewed online. The status of a book can either be Public, In Progress, or Copyrighted. Some books cannot be digitized and may only be viewed at the Family History Library. A Public document can be viewed from any computer. A status of Public or Copyright is shown when the Copy Link button is pressed after the book is opened. In Progress means that the document is temporarily out of circulation while it is being scanned. If a book is "off the shelf" for digitization, the word "In Progress" will appear in the FamilySearch Catalog next to the name of the book. Copyrighted books can only be viewed at the Family History Library, Family History Centers or at affiliate libraries and are limited to one copy which can be viewed at a time. Reading copies are only open for 24 hours at a time. Sometimes the author removes his/her permission to publicize the book. Sometimes it contains information about living persons and they have asked that it be withdrawn. There may be other reasons, but generally FamilySearch no longer has the rights to display the book online. Because of the way that PDFs and Firefox interact, occasionally images will not sharpen up enough to read when using the Mozilla Firefox browser. If you are using Firefox as your browser and a book appears out of focus, you may need to view the book using Google Chrome. InternetArchive.org Books Internet Archive is a non-profit library of millions of free books, movies, software, music, websites, and more. The Internet Archive offers over 15,000,000 freely downloadable books and texts. Click the book icon on the left. Then Genealogy in the center: It contains valuable genealogical information and it is continually growing. Better yet, the available documents are taken from a wide array of sources.
