1 Rahab and the Spies In this lesson, the children learn about Rahab, a woman of faith who helped protect the spies sent by Joshua to look over the Promised Land. TOPICS Choices, Courage, Faith, Fear, Helping, Joshua, Protection, Rahab AS KIDS ARRIVE (10 minutes) Rahab Helps the Spies (Coloring Page) page 4 BIBLE VERSE (5 minutes) "Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." 1 John 3:18 NIV Read the verse to the children and explain that our actions speak louder than mere words. Repeat the verse to the children several times. BIBLE STORY (15 minutes) Gather the children around you in a circle for story time. After the introduction, read the story about Joshua right from the Bible. If possible, use a Children's Bible so it will be easier for the kids to understand. Introduction: Today, we will learn about a woman named Rahab and find out how she helped the spies that Joshua sent to look over the land. Read Joshua 2:1-24 (Rahab and the Spies) Discussion Questions: 1. How many men did Joshua send to spy out the Promised Land? (Two.) 2. What was the name of the woman who helped Joshua's men? (Rahab.) 3. Why did Rahab help Joshua's men? (Rahab knew that God was helping the Israelites and that He was going to give them the land.) 4. How did Rahab help the spies? (She hid the spies from the king's men and also helped them escape.) 5. Where did Rahab hide the spies? (On the roof, under stalks of flax.) 6. What did Rahab ask in return for helping the spies escape? (Protection for herself and for her family.) 7. What did Rahab hang from the window to let God's people know which house was hers? (A red thread or cord.) FUN TIME (10 minutes) Rahab Helps the Spies (Activity) page 2 ALTERNATE FUN TIME (10 minutes) Rahab and the Spies (Craft) page 3 CLOSING ACTIVITY (5-10 minutes) Red Ribbon Hide & Seek (Game) Have the children close their eyes while you hide a red ribbon somewhere in the room. On the count of three the children open their eyes and begin searching for the red ribbon. The child that finds the ribbon will be the one to hide it during the next round of hide & seek. (You may want to set some guidelines on areas that are off limits such as storage areas or filing cabinets.)

2 RAHAB HELPS THE SPIES Rahab and the Spies Children put pictures of Rahab hiding the spies in order according to the Bible story. TOPICS: Faith, Helping, Rahab MATERIALS: Rahab activity page page 5 Crayons or colored markers DURATION: Approximately 10 minutes PREPARATION: Before class, print or make copies of the Rahab activity page for each child. WHAT YOU WILL DO: Read Joshua 2:1-24 to the children. Then give them a copy of the Rahab activity page. Have the kids write the number 1, 2, or 3 in the boxes provided to indicate the correct order the pictures appear in the Bible Story. When finished, have the children color the pictures. The correct numbers to appear in the boxes are as follows: 3 1 2

3 RAHAB AND THE SPIES Rahab and the Spies This craft helps children remember why Rahab helped the Israelite spies. TOPICS: Behavior, Courage, Kindness, Protection, Rahab MATERIALS: Template one for each child page 6 Template two for each child page 7 Nail, brass brads Medium card stock Colored pencils or markers DURATION: Approximately 10 minutes PREPARATION: Before class, print a set of templates on medium card stock for each child in class. Cut out each circle on the outer black line. Next cut out the space indicated by dashed gray lines on template one. Place template one over template two and use the nail to punch a hole through the center of both templates. WHAT YOU WILL DO: During class, the children will color both circles. Explain that Flax is a grassy plant used to make cloth and oils. As each child finishes coloring his or her circles, have the child place template one on top of template two and then push a brass brad through the holes in the center of both circles with the help of an adult. Discuss the Bible story about Rahab and the spies while the children work on their crafts. (See Joshua 2:1-24.) Discussion Questions: 1. Where did Rahab hide the spies? (Rahab hid the spies on the roof under stalks of flax.) 2. Why did Rahab help the spies? (Rahab knew that God was helping the Israelites and that He was going to give them the land.)

5 Rahab Helps The Spies Help put today's Bible story back in the right order. Place the number one in the box, next to the first thing that happened in today's Bible story. Place the number 2 in the box, next to the second thing that happened in today's Bible story. Place the number 3 in the box, next to the last thing that happened in today's Bible story. (If time permits the children may also color the pictures.) Rahab tied a scarlet thread in the window. Rahab hid the spies from the King's men. Rahab helped the spies escape out the window.
