2 Apply 2014 All UCAS applications are completed online via the UCAS website, and the Apply section of the website. Make a note of your Username, Password and Ucas ID number. No one in College has access to your Username or Password. You will need to use the Username and Password every time you log on to Apply to work on your application. When applying, you need to register first, please follow the steps below to do this. Click on Apply link on the left hand side of the main screen Register/Log in to use Apply 2013 under the Applicants section Click on Register Complete your details Choose a Password and answer security questions. UCAS will then generate your Username. Make a note of your Username and Password. Log in for the first time you will then be asked a few more questions You are registering through a School or College Buzzword = bedford14 Choose your personal tutor s name from the drop down box. If their name is not there, select don t know and inform your tutor. You can complete your UCAS application on any computer with internet access. Username Password Ucas ID 14 Ucas Student Helpline:

3 The UCAS Application Form KEY The key on the left hand side of the Welcome page will indicate how far you are through each section. You will have completed the whole form when each section is ticked. There are 5 sections to the application form: Personal Details Choices Education Employment Statement 1. Personal Details Use the grey drop down boxes or see list boxes, which will automatically input information for you. There are many fee codes, but if you have been educated in the UK or EU the Fee code is 02 UK, Chl, IoM, EU student finance services. If you are applying for a Health related course that is funded by the Department of Health use the code 05 DH/Regional Health. 2. Choices You can enter up to 5 courses on the UCAS application form. However, you do not have to use all 5 if you do not want to. You can only apply for either the University of Cambridge or the University of Oxford, but not both. Only 4 choices are allowed for Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Medicine/Science. 3. Education This is a complicated section so take time to input all your qualifications correctly. You will need to have all your certificates with you when you complete this section as you must use the exact title of the qualifications you have gained and also the awarding bodies. First, you input each College and Secondary/Upper schools you have attended by clicking on add new school/college/centre. You then need to start adding qualifications, so click on add qualifications under each school or college name which you have entered. You must add all completed qualifications and any you are currently taking. Ensure that the qualifications achieved are listed under the school or college where you took them. Enter the grade achieved, or pending if you have not yet completed the course. Don t forget to add: Functional Skills, Computer qualifications, Music qualifications, NVQs and any other qualifications you have completed alongside your main course. 4. Employment Enter up to 5 recent full time or part time jobs. In practice, most applicants will only give details of 2 or 3 relevant jobs. 15 Ucas Student Helpline:

4 5. Statement You have 4000 characters or 47 lines available for your personal statement; you will not be able to enter more than this. This is the most important part of the application form and also the most time consuming. Give yourself plenty of time and space to write this. Write your personal statement as a word document, not directly into your application as you will be timed out. Proof read it for spelling and grammatical errors, and ask someone to read it for sense. Get it checked by your personal tutor, but do not expect them to make changes or improvements or corrections. Once you re happy with your final version, copy it into the personal statement textbox in your application only when you feel it cannot be further improved. It will reformat itself and you may have a line or 2 too much or too little, so you may need to edit further to fit. Guidelines on what to include in your Personal Statement Explain the choice of courses Outline why you are interested in the course/s. Why does the content/structure of the course appeal to you? Does your current study have relevance to your course choices? Are you well motivated and enthusiastic about your chosen subject area? Describe your suitability by including: What have you been studying? What have you particularly enjoyed? Has this study sparked your interest or affected your course choices at HE level? How have you benefited from your study? (transferable skills) Longer term career objectives Even if these are vague, you could include an outline of the field in which you hope to work Detail any work experience, placement or voluntary work, particularly if relevant to your subject choices If you have contacts with your chosen profession, show how have these developed Completing the Form your knowledge and interest When you have completed a section, click on Section Finished. The person behind the form When all sections are finished you can then complete the Pay/Send section of the form: Describe yourself to admissions tutors: your skills, strengths, and personality don t just list points Outline your academic/social achievements Describe your sporting and leisure interests Are you planning a gap year? If so, what are you planning to do with it? 5 Paying your Application fee At the Pay/Send section, you will need to pay the application fee online with a debit or credit card. This is 14 for one course, 24 for 2 or more courses. After payment is made, you will be locked out of your application form so that your personal tutor can add the reference, although you are still able to see your form but not make any further changes or additions. If anything needs to be changed your personal tutor or the careers team can return the application form to you to make the changes. At this point the form has not been sent to UCAS, Once the reference has been added your tutor will check and approve your application and the form will then be sent to UCAS, by the UCAS Co-ordinator for your course. At any time, you will be able to see all your application but NOT the reference. Ucas Student Helpline:

6 Deadlines remember, remember the 15 th November! 15 th October Applications for Oxford, Cambridge, Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Medicine/Science. 15 th November Internal deadline for applications to be sent to tutor for reference to be added (except for Access and Fdn Art and design students) 1st December Internal deadline for students on Access and Art and Design Foundation Diploma course. 15 th January Final deadline for complete applications to reach UCAS on time, including the reference. Except those with a 15 th October deadline and Art and Design courses with a 24 th March deadline. This is the final application deadline set by Ucas and any application received after this date are considered late. Universities are not obliged to consider your application after this date. 24 th March Deadline for some Art and Design applications, including the reference, except those with a 15 th January deadline. If you are applying for Art & Design courses where there are both January and March deadlines, you must apply by the 15 th January. 25 th February Extra begins - see next page for an explanation of Extra 30 th June Last date for applications. Applications received by UCAS after this date will automatically be entered into Clearing and you will not be able to choose your preferred universities or colleges. 18 Ucas Student Helpline:

7 Extra Extra gives you the opportunity to add more courses to your application if you are not holding any offers and have used all of your 5 choices. You are eligible for Extra if you have been unsuccessful from all 5 of your choices or declined all offers you have received. You can apply for one course at a time only through Track. If you are unsuccessful with that place, you can apply for another. Extra is available from mid February until the end of June Track will let you know if you are eligible for Extra as an icon will appear when you log in to track your application. Before you add a choice using Extra make sure you contact the university to ensure they will consider your application. Ucas Student Helpline:
