2 You can apply for your e-visa online between 120 and 4 days before you arrive in India. Although the new online system is much simpler than the old paper application, it is still a little complicated in places, so we have created a step-by-step guide to help you through the process. Please note that you can only apply for 2 e-visas each year, so if you have been to India twice already this year you will need to apply for a full tourist visa through the Indian embassy. The e-visa can be used for a number of different nationalities but our guide is meant for British citizens. If you are a different nationality please contact your local Indian embassy for details on how to apply for a visa. Apply online at indianvisaonline.gov.in General tips Give yourself around an hour per visa to fill in the application - it s quite long! You will just need a tourist visa for your trip, not a student visa for which you need to be enrolled at an Indian school or university. Make sure you keep a note of your temporary application number. You will need this to log into the application system if it times out which it will do, a lot. You will need a PDF scan of the photo page of your passport and a clear passport style photograph in JPEG form to complete your application. Have these handy on your computer so that you can upload them when needed. Your passport style photo will need to be square, but don t worry about this. There is a useful cropping tool on the application site which will do this for you. At the end of the application you will need to pay for your visa. The cost can vary but it typically costs around US$75 plus a US$1-2 processing fee. You will need to pay this with a debit or credit card. The visa will typically take hours to process once you have submitted it. You will then receive your e-visa by . This looks very plain, and just contains your visa information with no branding, so don t worry if it looks odd! Print this off and take it with you when you fly to India. You can print off an official version with a barcode on the e-visa website. Log in under Visa Status If you come across any problems you can contact the e-visa Support Centre on or by at indiatvoa@gov.in for help. Stage 1: Enter the relevant details about your passport and personal details. Port of arrival - Mumbai Airport (unless your flight is via another India airport) Select etourist visa Select recreation / sightseeing

3 Step 2: Your temporary application ID is in red at the top of this page. Make a note of it! Citizenship/ID number - If you are a British Citizen type NA. This is not your passport number, they will ask for that later. This is for officially issued National ID cards, common in many other countries. Religion - Choose the relevant religion. If your religion is not listed, or you do not have one, select other and explain in the text box supplied underneath. Visible identification marks - Here you should list any visible birthmarks, scars or other marks which could be used to identify you. If you do not have any, write NONE. Educational qualification - If you are in secondary school or are in a Gap Year select Higher Secondary. If you are at university select Matriculation. If you have left university select Graduate.

4 Step 3: Present address - Your present address is the address at which you are currently living. This may be your parents house but could also be a term time address at school or university. Permanent address - Your permanent address is the address at which you are registered as a permanent resident, typically your parents house. This may be the same as your Present Address, in which case select the box marked Click Here for Same Address. Profession/occupation details - If you are a high school or university student select Student and give the occupation details of your father. If this is not applicable you can either give the last occupation of your father, or that of another parent / guardian. You do not need to fill in designation.

5 Step 4: Places likely to be visited - Enter Mumbai & Pune. If you are planning any further travel around India before or after your placement you should enter your intended destination here as well. Port of Exit - Mumbai, unless travelling further beyond placement Have you visited India before - Select yes if you have been to India before. You will be required to enter an address of where you stayed, and the details of your previous visa. If you do not have access to these details anymore, the e-visa Support Centre recommends selecting No as the answer to this question. Countries visited in last 10 years - Enter all the countries outside of the UK which you have visited in the last 10 years, separated by a comma. The box will only allow a certain number of characters so don t worry if you run out of space, just enter as many as you can.

6 Have you visited SAARC countries in the last 3 years - The SAARC countries are Afghanistan, Bhutan, Pakistan, Maldives, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. Reference person in India - Mrs Rekha Dubey - Aditya Birla Hospital Chinchwad, Pune, Telephone number Parents and students should not call this number. Mrs Dubey can only be used as a reference for enrolled Medical Projects students. Anyone else, including parents of students, should use a reference person supplied by their hotel. This is typically the hotel manager. Reference person in the UK - This should be a member of your family, ideally who lives at a different UK permanent address to yourself. Upload image - This is where you should upload your passport photo. Select upload image and a new pop-up window will appear. Step 4b: Choose your photo and then use the select tool to crop the photo into a square. The selected area will appear in the preview box on the right. Centre your face in the preview square and once you are happy click confirm.

7 Step 5b: You now need to upload the scan of your passport photo page. This must be the same passport as the details which you previously entered. Your passport scan must be in PDF format and smaller than 300 KB. Anything larger than this will not be accepted. Once you have uploaded your passport click the tick box to confirm that you have uploaded the passport from which your previous passport details were taken.

9 This is your last chance to edit the details on your visa application. Check all of your details carefully as any mistakes may lead to your visa being rejected. Once you are happy that all of the details are correct select Verify and Continue.

10 Step 7: Read through the disclaimer and if you are happy with it, select Yes to agree. Click Pay Now to finalise your application. You can pay at another time but be aware that your visa application will not be submitted until you have paid. Step 8: You will be redirected to the Indian visa payment site where you will be told the exact cost of your application. You can pay online here with debit or credit card. Once you have entered your card details click proceed. This can take up to 5 minutes to process and redirect you back to the visa application, do not refresh your page or click proceed again or you may be charged more than once.

11 Step 9: Once your payment has been successful you will be redirected back to the application site where you can view your application form. Make sure you either print or save your application form and your application number so you can check the status of your application. You will also receive an confirming your application has been submitted. Step 10: Wait for the telling you whether your visa has been approved! If your e-visa is granted log into the Visa Status section of the e-tourist visa application website and print a copy of the e-visa, which will contain a QR barcode. Bring it with you when you fly to India as you will be required to show it at immigration.
