1 Part II: Filed School Instructors: Name: Dr. Kenneth Snelgrove Sitotaw Yirdaw Office: EN4019 EN1035C Phone: Teaching Assistants: TBA Background: Surveying is a technique and science which encompasses all methods for measuring and collecting information about the physical earth and our environment, processing that information, and disseminating a variety of resulting products to a wide range of clients. The fieldwork in surveying allows students to handle a range of tools and instruments including chains, levels, transits, theodolites, electronic distance measurements, or total stations, and to learn the measurement techniques useful in the Civil Engineering practice. Objectives: On successful completion of this fieldwork, students should be able to: Illustrate an understanding of accuracy of measurement required in surveying; Illustrate a skill of the principles and techniques of basic surveying; Identify suitable equipment required for tasks in basic surveying; Show how to reduce data obtained from fieldwork to a useable form; Develop a skill to interpret and analyze the data using different software; Mastery of skills for using Geographical information Systems (GIS) software. Computer Usage: AutoDesk Map 3D, HyperCube. Textbook: Paul R. Wolf and Charles D. Ghilani, Elementary Surveying: An Introduction to Geomatics, Prentice Hall, Eleventh Edition, Fieldwork Assessment: The evaluation will consist mainly of the deliver of the fieldwork studies, term project and exams. This part of the course accounts 30% of the total mark for the course. Memorial University of Newfoundland 1

2 Important Notice: Although students will work in groups, each and every student is responsible for submitting a separate field notes showing his/her own effort except the term project that will be submitted in groups. The field notes shall include names of all partners in the group, project title and location, and date. The report itself shall contain the objective of the project, equipment, data recorded, and a sketch of the site. Emphasis of grading will be placed on the accuracy, neatness, legibility, clarity of sketch, and completeness of the notes. Labs: Lab Topics Objectives 1 Measurement of Horizontal To introduce the concepts of horizontal distance Distance measuring instruments and the associated errors that may have committed during measurements. 2 To introduce the method of differential leveling Differential Leveling and to learn basic techniques of leveling, and to practice standard note taking protocol for fieldwork. 3 Measurement of Horizontal To motivate the students to use the techniques and Vertical Angles taught in the course and to present the concepts of angles and coordinates. 4 Stationing a Reference Line, Profile Leveling To practice profile leveling techniques and develop and demonstrate excellent note keeping practices. 5 Area Determination by various methods To familiarize the students with the use of recent technologies in surveying for area determination for engineering applications. 6 Horizontal Curve Layout To gain familiarity with the theory, design and layout of highway curves. Term To practice various field measurement project Topographic Mapping procedures and follow-up computations through up-dating a designated area of an old topographic map of MUN. 3 Field Books: Field notes represent daily work done in the field. In practice, these records are kept for later computations in the office or may be used as evidence in a court of law. For these reasons, field books should be kept neat and clean. Note that a portion of the grade is assigned to this. Field books must be brought to lab each day and the data recorded directly in it. The title page is the first single page of the field book and should be appropriately labeled as follows: ENGI3703 SURVEYING AND GEOMATICS PROFESSOR(S) GROUP # MEMBERS: (etc.) FALL 2007 TABLE OF CONTENTS: LAB 1 Measurement of Horizontal Distance P. 1-2 (etc.) The table of contents should be filled in successively at the end of each lab. The left page is reserved for data collection and tabulations while the right page is for sketches and other descriptive information. Do not start a new day on the back of other data sheets. Each set of double pages comprises ONE page in the field book with one blank set between pages and should be numbered accordingly in the upper right-hand corner of the right page. The right page should include the following: 1. Project Name, date, time of day (A.M or P.M), and starting and finishing times. 2. Weather: Wind, temperature, and conditions such as rain, sunshine, or humidity have effects on the equipment and individual capabilities in the field and so should be noted in the field book. 4 3. Parties name and duties: Party member names and duties should be recorded. Each person should be the note-taker at least once during the semester. Symbols can be placed after each name describing duties, such as Λ for instrument-person, Ø for rod-person, N for note-taker, or when taping, HC for head chain-person, and RC for rear chain person. 4. Sketches: Sketches should show boundary lines of parcel and surrounding features such as buildings or sidewalks. Label the parcel (e.g. Parcel 5) and include information pertinent to each lab (e.g. Lab 1 should show avg. distances on sketch, etc.). Sketches must be NEAT and clear. Use a straightedge and circle templates (coins, credit cards, etc.) for line work. Don t forget to include a north arrow! If the sketch exists on a previous page, refer to it by lettering: SEE SKETCH ON PAGE 5, for example. 5. Instrument type and number: The type of instrument used with its serial number. Suggestions for note-taking: 1. Never erase. Cross out errors and write the correct value above. To void a page, draw an X through the entire page and write VOID across it. 2. Plan the layout of the field book page before starting. Make every note form expandable so that a lot of information can be carried over to following pages without crowding the starting page. Use example note forms as given or refer to examples in the text. 3. Note-taker must sign and date each page at bottom right page in ink. 4. Begin a new day s work on a new page. 5. Points (monuments) occupied and benchmarks used should be described (e.g. 1 iron pipe). 6. All field data should be entered directly into the field book. Field book evaluation criteria: 1. FORMAT a.
