NJIT Graphics II 2006 Syllabus Communication: Sketching as a way to quickly capture an idea, in order to re-present the idea to oneself (as a form of self-refl ection, i.e. thinking), and in order to communicate it to others. Drawing as analysis (of space, motion, etc.) and drawing as a way to generate design proposals. Drawing as the abstract space between analysis and design. Translation between media: you must learn to move quickly between hand and various types of computer drawing: 2D vector, 3D modeling and rendering, and editing raster images. The course will focus on sketching and hard-line drawing by hand, AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, 3dmax, and Adobe Photoshop; we will explore the strengths of each of these in order to encourage you to think critically about your tools. Project 1, Part 1 Project 1, Part 2 Project 1, Part 3 Project 1, Part 4 Project 1, Part 5 Project 2, Part 1 Project 2, Part 2 Project 2, Part 3 Project 2, Part 4 Spatial Sketching Techniques and Abstraction Observing Activity through Notation Measured Drawings of the Ramp Projecting your Notations back into Space Translation from Analysis to Design From Model to Image in 3D Studio MAX From Rendering to Collage in Photoshop Bringing technical drawings to life Arranging and Connecting Teaching Tuesday Cards for Inspirations Project 1, Part 1 Observing Space with Sketching Project 1, Part 2 Notation of Activity, Developing Language Project 1, Part 3 Measured Drawings of the Ramp Project 1, Part 4 Developing Idea Project 1, Part 5 Transformation of Ramp Space Project 2, Part 1 Negative Space Project 2, Part 2 Context Collage Project 2, Part 3 Sections and Elevations Space Check Project 2, Part 4 Conceptual Layout Final Pin Up: 2 Lay Outs 24 x 36 for Project 1 and 2 Guest Critics: Tina Wallbaum, Wassim Jabi Co-coordinators: Ken Tracy, George Showman Associate Dean for Academics: John Cays Graphics Teacher: Till Boettger

01 Anil Arkais Notation Ramp Space Using an industrial setting to transform the negative space of the ramps into a fully functional factory space that conveys movement through the use of belts and a working system. Factory Ramp Transformation
Slide down Steep tumbledown 02 Ignacio Armendariz LIVE LOAD Ramps-Movement and Space InverseUniverse Original concept: People using the ramps to climb and unknowingly fall to their doom. Traps. Slides. Funnels. Over the course of design, changes were made in order to utilize the slides for recreational use. I.e. Water slides. The ramps and negative space were inserted in a water scenario to imply the use of a water slide. First Sketch: The basic design of the ramp was first drawn. Then the negative space was enclosed in a box in order to solidify the empty space around the ramp. A funnel was then born from this box. Side Elevation Use of NegativeSpace Development of Collage Different levels were then added to show height. People were drawn in different scales to show depth. Idea of sketch was to walk up the ramps and then if one was so inclined, slide down the funnel into the unknown void. At different moments and points one can either slide down with ease or for the risk-taker, tumble down. This design requires one to walk up three different levels of ramps. Each level presents different heights from which one may slide down the water funnel and drop into the water. The arrows indicate that at any instance one may decide to jump.
03 Alexander Carlson Rudgers Negative Space The space that a person was walking through Project 1 is completelz fi lled in. Then, it is shrunk to a height of six feet, and then compacted until the path of the person walking is all that is left. The full fi lled in space has some planes removed, so that the interior can be seen in some places. Then, the path of the man walking is inserted into the opened up fi lled in space, and a new experience occurs.

Plan with Notation (top) Ramps with distortion (top) Ramps with distortion (top) 07 Ronald Nametko Legend = Slow Walk = Faster Pace = Slowing up/turn = = Some type of action ie: talking, hand The idea of this project was to create a negative space in ramps, and then create a bulding out of the negative space. The project consists more than just ramps, but a space that brings people to the ferry to get across the water. People go through these tunnels to get to a boat that takes them across the river to New York City.
08 James McGowan Ramps in Motion Ramp Evolution The evolution from project 1 to project 2 is the creation of a curvy surface made up of individual members. These different members create a complex surface with rhythm and complexity. Transformation Notes-Walking Speed Second Floor Plan Second Floor Plan Fast Medium Slow Standing First Floor Plan First Floor Plan The forest of cylinders defi nes the space by directing the occupant through the space by following the rhythm of the design.
09 Zachary Mongiovi Ramp vs Stairs Students come to a fork in the road and must try to make correct decisions. In this case it is only a serve as weather the ramp or the stairs will be a better route to get to the same destination, their next class and why. 3D vs 2D. Using color to bring together spaces and create shapes, and using various photo-based textures to separate and bring reference to these same spaces, can create completely different 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional renderings.

11 Helí Pinillos What s the meaning of space? How can we define it? After working on the Ramps Project, what I want to show in every image is how space is composed. And we as humans generate space through our movement. And we can start seeing that each single point fused with other different point creates a line. A line that joined with many other lines will generate the space. The negative space is the way to show how this happens. Generating different planes in different directions we can see the space. A space that is not seeing, nor able to be touched, but we can feel it. We can feel it through the the lines that defi ne it as it is shown in the collage. In addition the space can be modified through the volume or environment that contains it, by placing the Ramps in a different context will change the form, but the space will remain there.
