1 GUIDELINES FOR THE PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT TASK GRADE ENGINEERING GRAPHICS AND DESIGN EXTERNALLY MODERATED AND APPROVED BY UMALUSI THIS GUIDELINE CONSISTS OF 14 PAGES

2 1. INTRODUCTION: A. The Structure of the Practical Assessment Task (PAT) for EGD The Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD) PAT is compulsory and contributes 25% towards a learner's final mark. The PAT is the third examination paper of Engineering Graphics and Design and is compulsory. The learner must make sure of the content of the PAT. The whole PAT must be completed within the time frame. The PAT must be the learner s own work. The first drawings are freehand and then drawn with EGD equipment and pencil and with a CAD system (all specified methods of drawing must be used). Learners can choose between a Civil Technology PAT or a Mechanical Technology PAT. All the drawings must comply with the relevant SANS (SABS) and Guidelines Documents. i. Each EGD PAT consists of two parts: a. Part 1: The design process. b. Part 2: The required working and pictorial B. The PAT has to be completed in three phases during the year: The Grade 12 PAT must be completed by the middle of the third term (learners must be given six hours at the end terms 1 and 2 as well as the middle of term 3). The Tutor/Facilitator must assess the PAT before external moderation (SACAI/Umalusi) which takes place by the middle of the third term. Each Pat must be done under supervision / controlled conditions. It is important that learners assess their own progress and ensure that they do not fall behind. i. Phase 1: Design Process (to be completed by the end of the 1 st term) a. The scenario interpretation. b. Identification of the primary and secondary problem / solution. c. Specifications and constraints must be included. d. Learners should not only use the given scenario but elaborate on it. e. The research. f. Designing and planning. g. Freehand drawings of own ideas. h. Analytical selection of the best idea. i. The final pictorial ii. Phase 2: Pictorial drawings (to be completed by the end of the 2 nd term). a. Set up of drawing sheets. b. All the orthographic iii. Phase 3: Completion of the PAT (to be completed before external moderation in the 3 rd term). a. Presentation of the PAT. b. Self evaluation. c. CAD COPYRIGHT RESERVED Page 2

3 C. Assessment and Moderation: i. Formal and informal assessment should be conducted between the Phases. Formal assessment should be done on the assessment sheet. Informal assessment can be done by the learner or a peer/peer group. ii. Moderation can take place at time and must be available. Moderation before the beginning of the next phase is compulsory. iii. Completion of the declaration of authenticity is also compulsory. Use the form given. D. General instructions: i. This document contains both a Civil Design Project and a Mechanical Design Project. The Learner must select one. ii. All the presentation requirements must be adhered to. iii. PAT must be completed in the given time. iv. PAT must be the learner s own work. v. Use the Rubric for assessment to help you with the completion of the PAT. vi. When a learner is using a CAD system one of the orthographic drawings can be done using a CAD system. The isometric drawing or the perspective drawing can be done either with drawing instruments or a CAD system. E. Rubric of achievements: Commentary Mark Outstanding can t improve 10 Excellent 9 Very good 8 Minor errors 7 Good work few errors 6 A good effort 5 Did only the minimum 4 Tried but too m errors 3 Totally wrong 2 Very poor effort almost nothing 1 thing handed in 0 COPYRIGHT RESERVED Page 3
