2 The How to for Measuring a V-seal The V-seal contains three distinct parts, the body A, The lip B and the hinge C. The body holds the seal in place on the shaft or the mounting surface, the cone shaped flexible lip maintains light contact with the counterface forming the sealing surface. The hinge provides the force which keeps the lip against the counterface. These three parts work together to create a formidable seal, protecting bearings from contaminants. 3 Basic Seal Dimensions; Example V-25A The basic dimensions of the V-seals are as follows: (i.e. for a V-25 A) d - The molded inside diameter of the V-seal =.87 d1 - The shaft range the V-seal is made to fit = d2 - The maximum I.D. of the counterface = d d3 - The minimum O.D. of the counterface = d A - I.D. width of the V-seal =.18 B - O.D. width of the V-seal = 0.30 C - V-seal cross section = 0.16 B1 V-seal fitted width = 0.24+/-0.03 V-seal A-series Size Chart (V-25A Highlighted) 112 Parker Court I I P: I F: I Page 3
4 1) While measuring the O.D. of a seal, you will need to take three measurements that are equally spaced around the outside of the seal. The average of the three measurements is the seal s O.D. A rubber O.D. seal is generally to (0.203mm to 0.508mm) larger than the bore, for proper interference and compression fit. 2) The inner diameter can be difficult. You should take five I.D. measurements and average them for your I.D. Allow for interference, added to the lip I.D. When selecting seal size, you can use the shaft O.D. as the seal I.D 3) To measure the Height or Width of the seal, take three equally spaced measurements*. The average of the three measurements will provide you with an accurate reading. *For seals with a rubber case you should avoid measuring where there are visible markings or factory lettering. 112 Parker Court I I P: I F: I Page 4
5 The How to on Installing a V-seal for Rotary Shaft or Static applications Installation Instructions: 1. Make sure there are no sharp burrs or toll marks on the counter-face. 2. Wipe off the seat for the v-seal and make sure that all edges and corners that the v-seal comes in contact with during assembly are either rounded off or taped over. 3. Make a mark (ink, paint, chalk, etc.) on the v-seal for every 90 of circumference. Make the corresponding marks on the shaft. 4. Mount the v-seal by stretching it into place and make sure that the marks match. This procedure with marking the ring and the shaft is a simple means of making sure that the stretch of the rubber is evenly distributed over the entire circumference of the v-seal. If a seal is not evenly stretched the lip will look wavy and will not run true. At points of high stretch the lip may even lie down on the shaft and make assembly unmanageable. 5. 6 6. In certain cases it could be recommended to fix the v-seal axially and radially with cement. This cement should be slow hardening so that the v-seal can be manipulated after the cement has been applied. V-seal Installation Instructions for Diameters Larger than 24 (V-650 +): Installation Instructions: V-seals larger than V-600 (24 ) do not carry any molded identification since most are made by a Vulcanization process. V-600A & E to V-900A & E one joint. V-seals greater than V-950A & E two joints. Seals larger than V-600A & E can be marked with Yellow lettering indicating the nominal size. If the need should arise to check that the delivered v-seals are of the correct size the following method is recommended. 1. Lay the V-seal on a flat surface and take an average reading of the I.D. 2. The V-Seal I.D. should be roughly 10% smaller than the shaft diameter (shaft O.D.). When mounting the v-seals the following steps should be followed: 1. Make sure there are no sharp burrs or toll marks on the counter-face. 2. Wipe off the seat for the v-seal and make sure that all edges and corners that the v-seal comes in contact with during assembly are either rounded off or taped over. Otherwise, burrs, sharp edges or other deformations on the shaft could cut into the seal. 3. Make a mark (ink, paint, chalk, etc.) on the v-seal for every 90 of circumference. Make the corresponding marks on the shaft. 4. Mount the v-seal by stretching it into place and make sure that the marks match. This procedure with marking the ring and the shaft is a simple means of making sure that the stretch of the rubber is evenly distributed over the entire circumference of the v-seal.
