1 Tech Unit No: Revision: A Approved By: Quality Engineer Date: Lock-Set Packer Description: The MAP Model Lock-Set Retrievable Casing Packer is a general purpose packer for production, injection, zone isolation, or remedial operations. It holds pressure from above or below while allowing the tubing to be placed in tension, compression, or in a neutral condition. Full Bore Double-Grip Retrievable Packer with an integral Unloader. Opposed, non-transferring dovetail Slips prevent movement of the Packer in either direction due to pressure differentials, while allowing landing of the tubing in tension, compression, or neutral. Can be configured with a two or three element stack The Lock Segments serve as a re-leasable Lock Ring to maintain pack-off once the packer is set, and locks the Unloader in the closed position until the tool is released. The Split Lock and Control Segments allow the tool to be both set and released with right-hand rotation. 1
2 Operating Instructions: To Run and Set the Packer: 1. Hang the Packer to completely stretch it out be-fore starting in the hole. Immediately prior to running in, rotate the Drag Block Housing several turns to the left to make sure the Segments are functioning properly. Do not rotate the Drag Block Housing to the right as this will bind the Control Segments and prevent them from moving after reaching setting depth. 2. Upon reaching setting depth, slowly lower the packer while applying approximately two turns of right-hand rotation at the tool, until the tool takes weight. Set down a minimum of 6,000 lbs to initially set the Upper Slips. Lowering of the tool must take place while rotating for the tool to set properly. 3. To fully engage the Lower Slips, apply an upstrain against the tool: Upstrain (lbs) 4 1/2 ~7 10,000~20, /8 ~9 5/8 20,000~40,000 When the tubing is to be landed in tension, a strain greater than the landing strain should be applied during the setting operation. 4. To set the Upper Slips and pack-off the Packing Element system apply set-down weight: Minimum Weight (lbs) 4 1/2 ~5 1/2 6, , /8 ~9 5/8 15,000 NOTE: At this point in the setting procedure, if sufficient set-down weight is not available, such as in very shallow wells, the tool can be set and packed-off by left-hand rotation or spudding. To Release the Packer: Apply an upstrain of approximately 3,000 to 6,000 lbs and rotate the tubing to the right from four to eight turns at the tool, until the tool moves up the hole. When releasing the Packer with pressure in favor of the tubing, rotate tubing to the right slowly enough to equalize before the Lower Slips disengage. 7 Drag Block Assembly: NOTE: Drag Blocks have a wear groove on the Drag surface which is the same depth as the hardened surface. Check each drag block prior to use to confirm that the groove is still visible. If it is not visible, then the hardened surface is worn and the drag block should be discarded. 1. Dip each Drag Block Spring into grease and place into the drag blocks. 2. Thread the Assembly Ring (see chart below) until the cut-out on the ring aligns with the slot for the Drag Blocks on the Drag Block Housing. 3. Place the Drag Block in a C-Vise with the Vise open. 4. Slide the Drag Block, with Springs installed, into the Drag Block Housing. 5. Using the Vise, compress the Drag Block and Springs until the Assembly Ring can be rotated to the left to line up the slot for the next Drag Block. 6. Continue steps 5 and 6 until all Drag Blocks are in place. 7. Remove the Drag Block Assembly from the Vise. 8. Using a Hose Clamp, compress the Drag Blocks enough to remove the Assembly Ring. 9. Replace the Assembly Ring with the Lower Retainer. Once the Lower Retainer is threaded all the way down, place the Drag Block Housing in the Vise to tighten. 10. Remove the Hose Clamp. Assembly Ring Part Number Tool General Assembly Instructions: Apply a thin coat of Grease to the slots in the Slip Ring( 18). 2. Lay a Upper Cone (16) and Slip Ring on their sides on a bench. Install the Slips (17) from the inside by inserting the toe end of the Slip into the matching grooves of the Upper Cone and then engaging the Slip in the T-Slots in the Slip Ring. 3. When one set of Slips is assembled, compress the Slip Ring and Cone so the Slips cannot fall out. Assemble the other set of Slips in the same manner. (On 47, the undercut in the ID of the Slip Ring must face down towards the Lower Cone.) 4. Insert Sleeve (19) into Upper Cone (through the Lower Cone on s 47, 49 & 51) and install Torque Pins (15). The seal nose of the sleeve should be smooth and free from nicks and gouges. 7
8 5. Holding the Upper Cone in the vise, install Support Sleeve (12)(s 47, 49, & 51 only), Gage Rings (10), Packing Elements (11, 14), and Spacers (13) on the Sleeve. 6. Insert the Bearing (6), Bearing Ring (5), Retaining Ring (4), Seals (8), and O-ring (9) in the Seal Retainer (7) and make up the Seal Retainer on the Sleeve. 7. On size 43, the Sleeve should be torqued up to 400 to 500 ft-lbs. s 45 and 47, the Sleeve should be torqued up to 500 to 700 ft-lbs. 8. Apply grease to threads on Mandrel (3) and drive Mandrel through the Seal carefully. 9. Install the Lock Segments (30), Control Segments (24), and Garter Springs (22). On s 49 and 51, mesh two Garter Springs together in each groove. 10. Apply a light coat of grease to the Mandrel below Lower Cone. Do not grease the Segments. NOTE: Control Segments have one [1] scribed line and must be 180 degrees from each other. Lock Segments have two [2] scribed lines and must be 180 degrees from each other. 11. Thread the Drag Block Assembly (left-hand thread on s 43, 45, and 47; right-hand thread on s 49 and 51) onto the Lower Cone (20). 12. Make certain that the scribe lines on Control and Lock Segments are next to Lower Cone by using the inspection ports on the Drag Block Housing. 13. Line up holes in the Drag Block Housing and Install Cap Screws (23), Set Screw (21). 14. Make up Top Coupling (2) and Bottom Sub (31) (43A and B only) on Mandrel with recommended API torque. 15. Perform a functional test of the tool while still in the vise by moving in and out of the setting position. 8
