1 Collinwood Rain Barrel Project: Call for Artists To submit this application please include the following: 1) Completed application form including original signatures, 2) Proposed design(s) using the Photo & Size Description provided within this application as a resource, and 3) Brief statement (not to exceed one half (1/2) page) about your design(s). No CDR or online applications; Only paper copies including full color designs will be accepted. Color prints/copies of designs will be accepted; Type/print clearly please. DEADLINE: All of the above items must be postmarked or delivered to Northeast Shores Development Corporation 317 East 156th Street Cleveland, OH 44110, by Friday, February 1, 5pm, NO EXCEPTIONS. If you have any additional questions, please contact: Linda Zolten Wood at zoltenwooddesign@aol.com or message on Facebook at The Collinwood Painted Rain Barrel Project. What is The Collinwood Rain Barrel Project? North Collinwood is well known for water quality & conservation. This project celebrates these efforts and intends to showcase our outstanding regional artists by helping to support their entrepreneurial spirit. Artists will compete to design and execute their work on a 50 Gallon Rain Barrel. To make each barrel a unique work of art, each artist is asked to be inspired by North Collinwood or the Northeast Shore s cultural influences, unique physical characteristics and/or history of the North Collinwood area; Artists may interpret the impact that clean Lake water has to our community, as well. The top ten designs will be completed and auctioned to the community at an event on Saturday April 13, 2013 at Arts Collinwood. Artists will be paid an honorarium of $400 upon completion and delivery to Ohio Technical College on March 22 nd, In addition, each artist will receive 2 tickets to the Rain Barrel Auction Event on Saturday April 13, 6pm (a value of $100). Northeast Shores Development Corporation is a wealth of information please use their website as a resource: NSDC is located at: 317 East 156th Street Cleveland, OH 44110; (216) Specifications Translucent white poly-vinyl plastic and measure: 35 in Height, 23 in Diameter, 67 in Circumference. They will be sanded and White Primer will be applied by the Project team. Artists will be given a translucent, off-white barrel with a 2 rain water gauge that will remain unpainted for practical use; the barrel owners need to determine their water level. This gauge will be a vertical stripe by the spigot installation location 3 from the bottom edge of the barrel. 1
2 See for specific questions. DESIGN in the ROUND: Submit a RECTANGLE design taking into account that the circumference of the barrel is roughly twice the height a 5 x 10 rectangle on a sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 - standard printer paper will suffice; HORIZONTAL format, and you will approximate the design space needed. The top round of the barrel will need a minimal design as well, but not the bottom round surface. An example of a painted barrel is on Facebook at The Collinwood Painted Rain Barrel Project. Selection Process Submitted proposals will be reviewed by a Selection Committee made up of local prominent arts related professionals to insure quality and content. All designs are subject to the Selection Committee s discretion and the Committee reserves the right to reject any submitted proposals. NSDC staff and board members will not be involved in the selection process. Once an approved design has been selected for production, the artist will be notified immediately and arrangements will be made to pick up a prepped barrel. Artistic Designs The artist may paint, sculpt and transform the barrel form but the design must stand up to the rigors of weather and water use; the structural integrity of the barrel must not be compromised (no punctures, cuts or holes added. The design should not include any advertising of a product or company. 2
3 Artist s signatures are requested to be made readable. Design Guidelines When creating a design, please consider normal wear and tear, weather, water contact and portability. As such, designs should be created with durability and public safety in mind. Artists should be aware that vandalism can occur. Any object added to the barrel should be attached in such a way that it cannot be easily removed. Any additional costs incurred as a result of alteration to the original form are the artist s responsibility. Artists should bear in mind that the audience will be broad based and of all ages; designs should be appropriate for public display. Designs that are religious, political or sexual in nature will not be accepted. Up to two design proposals may be submitted. Production of Barrel Artists will decorate their barrels in their studio or home. The artist will be responsible for transporting their barrel to and from his or her studio without damage to the surface. Artists will also be responsible for the cost of all materials used in the production of their barrel. Acrylic paint, artificial resin paint or two-component paint can be used to paint or spray a design on the barrel. Final designs must be that of the original proposal, unless specified by the Selection Committee before work begins. Upon completion of the artwork, a spigot will be attached aprox. 3 inches from the bottom edge and a clear exterior grade sealer that is non-reactive UV resistant and waterproof will be applied. The Project team will arrange these final steps. Barrels on Display and Auction If the artist is not available for touch ups (if needed), the Project may ask another artist to perform the work. Artists are expected to be available to attend the Auction Event Saturday April 13 th at 6pm. Artist Honorarium Before the finished barrels are delivered, the barrel must be inspected by a representative of the Selection Committee. Artists progress must be checked either in person or by jpg on facebook or by 5pm March 15 th. If it is determined that an artist s finished barrel has been completed in substantial conformity to the artist s approved design, the finished barrel will be approved. Artists will be paid upon safe delivery to Ohio Technical College, but must Invoice the Project upon delivery to receive a check for their honorarium. In addition, each artist will receive 2 tickets to the Auction Event on April 13 th 2013 at Arts Collinwood (a value of $100). Rights/Entitlements By submitting your application you confirm that: You are the original creator of your design. You have not copied anyone else s original work. Your design does not infringe on anyone else's intellectual property rights (for example trademark, copyrights, design patent). To the extent anyone else has contributed to your design, you shall obtain a signed written agreement from that person assigning all of their rights in the contribution to you. Artist Liability Artists are expected to respect the Project s deadlines. If the barrel is incomplete by the deadline, the artist will not be paid at all, and must return the barrel to Arts Collinwood by the event date incomplete. If the barrel is completed but punctured, damaged or unusable as a working rain barrel, the 3
4 artist will not be paid, and must purchase and deliver a new, natural color 50 gallon rain barrel to Arts Collinwood by the Auction Event on April 13, 2013, from Container Compliance (see above web address). Copyright Assignment The artist will retain rights to their design, but they agrees not to use, publish or post their design for commercial or social networking purposes until the entire Project/Event is completed at 10pm April 13, 2013, according to project s timeline. The Project will have the right to reproduce, sell and distribute the design or a derivative of the design for purposes of promoting the overall project by all means and media.
