1 Rain Barrels on Parade One drop at a time Artists, designers, students and citizens are invited to submit designs for the Grafton Rain Barr els on Parade! We need the help of local students, citizens and artists, individually or as a group, to decorate and design barrels. Campaign details Grafton s Rain Barrels Parade is a public art exhibition that places up to 24 rain barrels designed and decorate by local artists throughout the village. While the barrels are the same size and shape, each artist is challenged to create his or her own artistic interpretation. The parade will showcase rain barrels role in water quality protection and water conservation for residents, businesses and industries. This original and unusual artwork will be on display May 20 - July 23. at village-owned and private partner locations throughout downtown Grafton. Visitors can vote for a favorite barrel online or a at any site. Signs about the barrels and program will be placed with each barrel and will include artist and design information. In late July, the barrels will be th Ave. Proceeds will be used for the Grafton Public Arts Board to fund future public arts projects. Learn more about the project at What is a rain barrel? Rain barrels capture rainwater from roofs that would enter storm drains and streams, slowing it out pollutants. The EPA states that lawn and garden watering are nearly 40 percent of total household water use during the summer. Rain barrels provide a consistent supply of clean, fresh water for outdoor use free of charge. They are simple and inexpensive to construct and sit conveniently under gutter downspouts.

2 Call to artists Interested artists are required to submit a short summary of the intended rain barrel design. If you are interested in submitting a design, please review the following information: Eligibility Designing a rain barrel is open to all artists, from the acclaimed to the amateur. Children as well as adults are invited to submit designs. Elements Written description of proposed barrel (350 words maximum) Artist resumé (200 words max.) Signed application form Signed copyright form Incomplete applications will not be considered. Rights/Entitlements By submitting your application, You are the original creator of your design. You have not copied anyone else s original work. Your design does not infringe on anyone else s intellectual property rights (trademark, copyrights, design patent, or any other legal agreements or contracts). Questions? Artist will recieve a $50 stipend towards cost of materials. The Village will be responsible for sealing the rain barrel with a polyeurethane spray. The Village of Grafton will provide the barrel and hardware at no cost to the artist. Nothing should be adhered to the barrels. Barrels must be designed to stand vertically. Barrel design rules All completed rain barrels must be functional and able to withstand the weather. Barrels will be accessible to the public Designs should be created with durability and safety in mind. Rain Barrel timeline March 1 Application submission due date: Drawing of the barrel, a paragraph describing the artists intentions, and artist bio will be submitted to the Village of Grafton for consideration. March 21 The Public Arts Board will review the submissions and notify accepted artists. Barrels can be picked up by artists beginning March 22. May 2 Barrel return deadline: Completed barrels are board parade and get them to their sites. May 20 Barrels go on display: Look for them around town through July 23rd. Then, see them all at the Arts Mill, th ave., Grafton. The artwork needs to have a connection to stormwater, water quality, nature, environmental protection or conservation in its theme. Corporate logos or advertising are not allowed. Designs of a political, religious or sexual nature or that are otherwise inappropriate will be rejected at the sole discretion of the Village of Grafton. This program is meant to be educational and inspiring, not controversial. Acrylic paint works best on the plastic barrels. Artists should be available for touch-up work, if required.

3 Application 2011 Rain Barrels on Parade Artist Application Artists should bear in mind that the audience will be broad-based and of all ages, and designs should be appropriate for public display. Designs that are religious, political or sexual in nature will not be accepted. Additionally, neither corporate logos nor advertising is allowed. Designs will be evaluated by the Village of Grafton review panel to ensure they conform to these guidelines. The Village may reject any design which, in its sole discretion, does not adhere to these guideline and upon the Village Grafton residents. 4 Copyright assignment ( Artist ) is the artist of a rain barrel design and/or sketches (collectively referred to as the Design ) attached to the 2011 Rain Barrel on Parade application submitted to the Village of Grafton on this date; WHEREAS, Artist understands and acknowledges that, as part of the application process, it is intended that the Village of Grafton, 860 Badger Cirlce, Grafton WI, own the entire right, title and interest in and to the Design; WHEREAS, Artist understands and acknowledges that, if the Design is approved, he/she shall apply that Design to a rain barrel provided by the Village of Grafton, thereby creating a Finished Rain Barrel. WHEREAS, Artist desires to transfer all of his/her right, title and interest in and to the Design, including, but not limited to, all derivative works which are based on the Design to the Village of Grafton; WHEREAS, Artist understands and acknowledges that the Village of Grafton shall continue to be the sole and exclusive owner of the entire right, title and interest in and to the Design, including, but not limited to, all derivative works NOW, THEREFORE, for good and valuable consideration, receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, and intending to be legally bound hereby, the parties hereto agree as follows: Artist hereby assigns to the Village of Grafton all his/her right, title and interest in and to the Design, and to any derivative works based on the Design including, but not limited to, any rights it may have in the Finished Rain Barrel, together with any and all copyright applications and registrations therefore. Artist acknowledges and agrees that, due to the nature of the public display of the Finished Rain Barrel, the Village of Grafton of the Finished Rain Barrel by accident, act of God or person. Artist hereby waives his/her rights under the Visual Artists Rights Act ( VARA ), 17 U.S.C.,106A, as against the Village of Grafton and its display partners in the event of such distortion, and the Artist is unable or unwilling to promptly, in the sole determination of the Village of Grafton, repair such alteration, the Village of Grafton shall have the right to make, or have made, such repairs, even if the repairs would constitute a the extent the Village of Grafton deems such repair necessary. Artist represents to the Village of Grafton that he/she is the sole author of the Design and that the Design is an original work of authorship which does not infringe upon the copyright rights or any intellectual property rights of others, and that he/she has the unencumbered right to make this assignment. Artist agrees to indemnify and hold the Village of Lenexa harmless from and against any and all claims, suits, damages, costs, losses and expenses arising out of or in any way connected to the actual or alleged infringement by Artist of any copyright or other intellectual property rights. In the event the Design is not approved or selected for exhibition, as described in the application, the Village of Grafton shall assign, and hereby does assign, all rights, title and interest in and to the Design back to Artist.
