1 2015 Summer Sculpture Series CALLING ALL ARTISTS & CREATIVE MINDS! This is your invitation to participate in the 14 Th Summer Sculpture Series for Downtown Midland The 2015 Summer Sculpture Series Downtown Midland theme will be Bikes (Still working on an exciting Bike Name and Logo.) That's right, bikes! Here is your chance to literally put the pedal to the metal and get creative about biking, cycling, freewheeling and pedaling. So go bold and have fun! We are looking for sculptures that celebrate all things bikes: cycling, spinning, kids bikes, racing bikes, touring bikes, antique bikes, new age bikes, wheels, baskets, pedals, helmets, gears, seats and more! Think color and movement garden and wall art but give it a bike theme. The bike theme should not limit you to just using bike parts to create your sculpture, other ideas include using different materials to create the bike theme, such as wood (oak, driftwood, white birch, maple, Birdseye maple, and more!), steel metal embellished with mosaic tile, or copper that will age gracefully over the years, or even use old license plates to add to your sculpture with a unique flair. In addition to unusual materials consider color and keep in mind that paint can add a world of difference - imagine a ruby red bike sculpture, just like Dorothy's ruby red slippers! Brilliant safety orange, vibrant yellow, cool and calm blue, swirling purples.the whole color wheel can be your muse. Some of our best sculptures over the years have been interactive with movement - take advantage of the wind, the sun, and the options with solar lighting. There are even solar water fountains now, what about a bike fountain!

2 Current trends are always a hot topic, so think steampunk (just google it), recycle, repurpose and other current hot trends. Check out for other interesting bike sculptures. Most importantly make sure that your sculpture is BIG, bold, noticeable and exciting. This is your chance to show the world what a unique and creative artist you are. The committee is looking forward to seeing your ideas as you step outside the box and inspire.create..celebrate BIKES! DETAILS Selected artists will receive up to $500 stipend to pay for production and materials; $100 initial stipend Up to $400 reimbursed after submission of receipts Sculptures must be constructed of materials able to survive outside (weatherproof) and entertain our Downtown Midland guests all summer long; At the end of the season sculptures are auctioned off to the highest bidder with the proceeds helping fund the 2016 Summer Sculpture Series. Each selected artist will be featured in the professionally-published BIKES Summer Sculpture guide made available to thousands of Downtown Midland visitors all summer long and published in the Midland Daily News at the beginning of the series. Successful artists are treated to a Great Lakes Loons baseball game where you will be our guest in the Chemical Bank Suite at Dow Diamond and introduced at that evening s game. You and your piece will also be featured guests at the end-of-the-season Sculpture Auction where you will have the chance to win prizes as a Peoples Choice winner and Judges Choice winner, which carries a $2,500 purse. 3 2015 ~ Downtown Midland BIKES Summer Sculpture Series SCULPTURE SPECIFICATIONS The Midland, Michigan Downtown Development Authority invites you to enter the 2015 Summer Sculpture Series competition. This year s theme is BIKES where artists are challenged to think all things bikes! Sculptures will be placed in Midland s Downtown area for display during summer Plaques recognizing the artist and sponsoring business will accompany each piece. At the end of the summer the sculptures will be publicly auctioned with proceeds benefitting the 2016 Sculpture Series. 4 SCULPTURE SIZE SPECIFICATIONS There is no upper limit to the sculpture size. Artists and the selection committee must take into consideration the following: stability of the piece; ability to transport and set the piece; weight of the piece. Sculptures may be no smaller than 3 ft. high x 2 ft. wide x 2 ft. deep Sculpture should be original and imaginative and generally friendly in nature; Sculpture may be realistic or whimsical; Sculpture must be of sturdy construction (entries will be reviewed by a structural engineer). Sculpture must be stable and secure enough to withstand strong winds and the occasional touch or hug it will receive from the public. Thought must be given to minimizing opportunities for vandalism and breakage small, delicate and protruding pieces have become a target of folks who can t resist handling the piece; Safety features must be carefully considered to protect the public (no rough or pointed edges, etc.); Design must include an anchor mechanism (i.e. L brackets, 3-4) for securing to a base or bases to be provided on site at no cost to the artist. Construction materials of your choice should be substantial, high quality, sturdy and suitable for outdoor exposure over an extended period (weatherproof). Entries will be judged on durability, creativity and sale-ability. Each entry must be given a NAME by its artist. Be imaginative! Selected artists receive up to $500 to complete the project. An initial payment of $100 to get the artist started followed by up to $400 reimbursed following submission of receipts. Each artist must provide a sculpture care instruction sheet prior to the installation of the sculpture. These are provided to the new owner following the auction for the continued care and maintenance of your piece. Limit three submissions per artist. An 8 ½ x 11 detailed, colored artist rendering of the sculpture must accompany each application. A signed application/contract MUST accompany EACH submission (do not submit multiple entries with one application/contract). Limit three submissions per artist. Questions? 6 Will the piece include unusual features requiring special attention, maintenance and consideration for placement (i.e. adhered appliqués, solar element(s), plant life, water feature, etc)? If so please describe in as much detail as possible: If submitting more than one sculpture how many are you willing to create if selected? I ve attached a detailed 8 1/2 x 11 color rendition of the sculpture. By signing below I agree: 1. The Artist will deliver the completed sculpture to the designated clear coating vendor NO LATER THAN May 21, 2015, NO EXCEPTIONS. Costs of clear coating are assumed by the Sculpture Committee at no charge to the artist and are assumed by the sculpture committee. ~OR~ Sculptures that do not need clear coating for protection (a decision made by the artist advocate prior to commencement) must be delivered to a Midland location, to be identified, NO LATER THAN MAY 29, 2015, NO EXCEPTIONS. 2. The Artist assumes responsibility for transportation/delivery of the final piece to the designated location. 3. The final assembly of the sculpture may occur on-site if necessary for transportation and placement purposes; however the purchaser of the final sculpture must be able to disassemble, re-assemble and transport the piece without harm to the artwork upon completion of the series. 4. The Artist agrees to follow the project s stipulated guidelines and complete the sculpture according to the design and details submitted to and accepted by the 2015 Sculpture Series Committee, unless changes are agreed upon by both parties, in writing. 5. The Artist agrees to prepare a Care and Maintenance Document to be presented to the purchaser of the sculpture at auction. The document should include what materials were used, colors, or other general information to help with future repairs and also include detailed instructions or guidelines on how to care for the sculpture. 6. The Downtown Development Authority hereby agrees to pay a stipend of up to $500 to the Artist constructing a sculpture. A $100 initial payment will be made followed by up to $400 reimbursed provided submission of receipts. 7. Stipends will only be paid if the Downtown Development Authority receives the Artists 1099 form which will be provided to the Artist at the finalists meeting. 8. The Artist hereby releases any and all rights to said sculpture and acknowledges that all ownership interests or creative interests belong exclusively to the Downtown Development Authority. The 2015 Sculpture Series Committee further determines where sculptures are placed in the downtown area. 9. Should the Artist fail to create, provide and/or deliver the sculpture as specified above, the Artist hereby agrees to refund the stipend of up to $500 as well as a $500 cancellation fee to the Downtown Development Authority by June 10, The undersigned representing the above individual, group or organization agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the City of Midland, the Downtown Development Authority, its elected and appointed officials, officers, employees and agents from any and all liability on account of personal injury, including bodily injury or death, and/or property damage, including loss of use thereof, and any other causes of action, claims, demands, sums of money, expenses or compensation of any kind whatsoever arising from this Contractual Service Agreement. 11. Both parties, by their signature below, acknowledge that they have read and understand the rights and responsibilities as set out above. Each party agrees to be bound by the obligations of this Contractual Service Agreement unless modified in writing and signed by both parties.
