1 Signs & Symbols PROSPECTUS Signs & Symbols The Alberta Society of Artists invites all ASA Full Members to participate in a new exhibition, Signs & Symbols. OVERVIEW Throughout time, the human mind has used signs and symbols as a veiled reference of personality or as an interpretive means for commerce and communication. A sign or symbol is an image that represents or suggests an idea, belief, or action. In cartography, an organized collection of symbols forms a legend for a map. The icon as symbol can be religious, literal like the trash can on your computer screen, or metaphorical (sports, world peace figure or pop star icon) Gang signs, hobo signs or visual signs such as animal tracks your own tracks. What signs and symbols are meaningful to you as an artist? EXHIBITION VENUE FOR SIGNS & SYMBOLS Artpoint, 1139 Adelaide Street SE, Calgary, Alberta IMPORTANT DATES Exhibition Dates: April 21 st May 9 th, 2016 Opening Reception Date: Thursday, April 21, 2016 Deadline for Submissions: Postmarked no later than February 26, 2016 at 4:30pm Notification of Results: March 11, 2016 REQUIREMENTS 1. Eligibility: a. All artists must be Full Members of the ASA in good standing. b. Open to 2D and 3D works. NOTE: Plinths are limited and uncovered. 2. Exhibition Information: a. Artists may not have submitted this artwork previously for consideration into any other ASA exhibits. b. Artists may not have exhibited this artwork previously in Alberta, and may not exhibit the work before the exhibit takes place. c. Two works of art may be submitted per artist.

2 d. This exhibition will accept both works for exhibition only and works for sale. Any sale arising from this exhibit will have a commission not to exceed 50% of the value of the work. e. Notification of results will be by . f. Hanging and take down dates and times to be determined. g. Incomplete submissions will not move to jurying phase. h. Jury results are final; artists will not receive feedback or comments from the jury. 3. General Submission Requirements: a. Each submission must contain the following: Completed and signed application form. A 100 word artwork statement related to the piece submitted. Artist's CV of no more than 3 pages that describes education, exhibition history, art organization memberships, the image as described in the format described below that adheres to the exhibition's theme. 4. Image Requirements: Entries must be submitted either through or as digital files burned to a CD. Entries must conform to the guidelines as follows: a. Artwork may not have been created as part of a class or a workshop b. Image files submitted on a CD must include a hard copy of application form. c. Each image file must be in JPEG format, 300 dpi, and should not exceed 3 MB in size. d. Please ensure that all image files are correctly oriented. e. Image files must be clear of frames, walls, borders or any other backgrounds. Images should be of the artwork only; no date stamps, no watermarks, no copyright symbols, or any other elements should be present that will obstruct the visual field. f. If submitting via , a scanned or filled out entry form must be included in the as a word or PDF document labeled as: FirstName_LastName_Submission.doc or.pdf. g. Artist and artwork information copied and pasted into body of will not be accepted. h. Artists must include an artwork statement that does not exceed 100 words and labeled as: LastName_FirstName_Statement.doc or.pdf. i. Submission must include a CV and labeled as: LastName_FirstName_CV.doc or.pdf. j. Image files should be appropriately labeled: LastName_FirstName_Title.jpg.

One extra detail image file can be presented for 2 D artwork and labeled: LastName_FirstName_Title_Detail.jpeg. l. 3D Pieces can provide up to 4 images to present the 360degree view of the work: LastName_FirstName_Title_1.jpeg. m. Diptychs and triptychs must be submitted in one file showing how the pieces work together and individually as image files labeled: LastName_FirstName_Title_A.jpeg, B.jpeg and/or C.jpeg. n. Label the CD with your name, exhibit you are entering and telephone number. o. All submission elements must be received at the same time. You may not and mail parts of the submission at separate times. IF ACCEPTED 5. Accepted Artists: a. Accepted artists will be expected to volunteer in different capacities related to the exhibition. b. No early withdrawals of artwork are permitted during the exhibition. It is expected that the work juried and submitted by the artist to the exhibit will be hung in gallery for the entire durations of the travelling exhibition. c. No substitutions will be accepted once a work of art has been juried in. This includes changes in the image, title, dimensions, etc. d. ASA reserves the right not to display artwork that differs significantly from the accepted submitted images or does not present professionally e. All artwork must meet the above criteria in order to be showcased in the exhibit. 6. Specifications: a. Works must be signed, gallery ready, appropriately framed, and with wires or fasteners installed for hanging the work (D rings with wire.) Any unique artworks that require special care or have installation instructions must be clearly explained and labeled. Painted edges on wide canvas frames are acceptable. Please hang wires about ¼ of theway from the top of the piece lower wiring will create an unattractive hanging angle. Each work must be clearly and securely labeled on the back with the name of the artist, the title of the work, and the media employed. b. Safe transportation of material to be exhibited is the responsibility of the artist both to and from the gallery. Please remove and take away any wrapping or packaging of your artworks when you bring them to the gallery. Small, easily damaged items may be left in their wrappings or boxes until they are exhibited. c. No sawtooth or wall buddies permitted d. Maximum size: 60" in any direction. Any work exceeding 18x24'' that would be normally framed in glass must be framed in plexiglass instead. Long pieces exceeding 24'' should have plexiglass even if the height is less than 18''.

4 e. Please Note: ASA is not responsible for any potential damages to framed plexiglass that occur during transportation or throughout the duration of this exhibition. 7. Liability and Insurance a. Artists are encouraged to seek insurance coverage for their artwork during transportation and for the duration of the exhibit. b. The sale price of the artwork should be equivalent to its insurance cost. c. While the ASA takes every effort to ensure careful handling, and hanging, the ASA is not responsible for any damages to artwork (including but not limited to theft, vandalism, fire, obstruction or scratches in artwork's frame) or loss of artwork entered into the exhibition. d. By submitting their artwork to this exhibition, artists are acknowledging and agreeing that ASA is not responsible for reimbursement or replacement of lost, stolen or damaged artwork submitted to the exhibition. 8. Transportation Protocol a. ASA is not responsible for any fees or insurance coverage involving the transportation of artwork to and from the drop off and pick up locations. b. Drop off of Accepted Work: All works should be delivered to the Gallery ready for installation. Date and time will be communicated upon acceptance. If you cannot drop off the artwork at the Gallery on the indicated date/time then you must make arrangements to ship your work to the Calgary office. Note: ASA is not responsible for the cost of shipping. c. Artists are responsible for following the packaging and shipping guidelines of their chosen method of transportation; this includes appropriately packaging their work, labelling their piece and carrying out any further actions that ensure safe delivery of artwork (i.e. fragile stickers, if necessary). d. Accepted artists will need to enclose prepaid shipping and instructions for return of the artwork if using mail or courier services. e. It is not ASA s responsibility to organize the return of accepted artwork beyond repackaging and arranging delivery to mail, or courier, for pickup. f. All artwork must meet the above criteria to be showcased in the exhibition. g. ASA will arrange for and transport artwork between locations included as venues in the travelling exhibition
