However, not always met the requirements of the various exercises. I think you are playing safe. Going forward, try and take some risks. Okay to get things wrong you are a student. Your blog is off to a satisfactory start, but is patchy. Please send physical work including your sketchbook for your next assignment. Assessment potential You may want to get credit for your hard work and achievements with the OCA by formally submitting your work for assessment at the end of the module. More and more people are taking the idea of lifelong learning seriously by submitting their work for assessment but it is entirely up to you. We are just as keen to support you whether you study for pleasure or to gain qualifications. Please consider whether you want to put your work forward for assessment and let me know your decision when you submit Assignment 2. I can then give you feedback on how well your work meets the assessment requirements.

2 Feedback on assignment Demonstration of technical and Visual Skills, Quality of Outcome, Demonstration of Creativity Temporary drawings: pleasing but limited response. A greater range of explorations would have been beneficial. You saw the link to Jackson Pollock. Expressive lines and marks: again limited. Repetitious within each category. Feelings research point: both choices similar, could have referenced something far more expressive already mentioned Pollock. See Jeanette Barnes (b.1961) suggesting frenzied activity, work and the heaviness of the building structures. Jeanette Barnes Group of Objects: good composition in both drawings. Brief asks for looseness and expression; Toy drawing very controlled, however demonstrates a good grasp of perspective. Observing shadows using blocks of tone: not blocks, a more conventional tonal approach used. The colour drawing is a lovely thing, demonstrating sensitive handling of media, composition that recognizes negative space and pleasing sense of colour.

3 Creating shadow using lines and marks: good attempt, cross-hatched images of pears strong and energetic, whereas bottle and apple images look mechanical and constrained. Colour work strayed from brief, only one drawing making use of lines as marks. But black ink drawing has nice handling of media. Learning point: outline vs tone Shadows and reflected light: Nice enough drawings which engage with reflected light, though a bit obliquely. But not followed brief - not filled page and no bold strokes with side of charcoal/conté. General point: Many exercises call for bold stokes/rapid/loose drawings etc. You have not really engaged with this and I wonder if this active avoidance? As a student you must enable to yourself to make discoveries (and mistakes). It is not about saying look what I can do but more about look what I have discovered. Assignment 1: composition pleasing, but perhaps tending to right-hand side emphasis. In future explore more options: different viewpoints, objects and set-ups. Try photos and thumbnails. Drawings carefully made, demonstrate investment of time and effort. Sketchbooks Demonstration of technical and Visual Skills, Demonstration of Creativity Beginning to use sketchbook as a working tool. Generally, make more extensive explorations of media, mark making and composition. Will comment more when physical book arrives with next assignment. Learning Logs or Blogs/Critical essays Context On the right lines discussing technical matters and there is some reflective content. But patchy no discussion of atmospheric potential of tone or selfassessment against the learning criteria. You can dispense with reiterating the briefs if you wish.
