Hamilton Library TBD TBD TBD Superintendent Message April 7 You will note we are increasing the admission price for our Spring Event on April 7 th from $5 to $7 for members and from $7 to $9 for visitors. This seems a good time to talk about the work and expenses of the International Division, lest you think the Executive members are puffing on fat cheroots and quaffing aged port. As you will see in our financial report from Paymaster Walter Reid, the ID has a small but comforting bank account which we try hard to maintain for emergencies or worthwhile causes. Our biggest expense is hall rental. We try to move our events around the Division, which roughly includes the area served by the QEW plus part of New York State. We have some facilities that are actually free, but in others we have to pay the rent. We never know how many of you will show up, so if we have 10 in attendance we must make up the difference, but 40 admissions allow us to tuck away something for the future. 3

4 We are able to maintain a reasonable price because so much of the work is done by volunteers. The six members of the Executive meet for brunch about 4 times a year, food and transportation at their own expense. Our presenters are also volunteers, and speaking from experience, putting on an hour presentation requires many more hours of preparation. Nevertheless, our Executive volunteers are a jolly lot. During our meetings, they find rewards conversation and knowledge about our favourite hobby. This brings up a request for more members to step up and help. There is always a bit of turnover (although most of the Exec. seem to have been around since BD*) so adding a few extra hands every year is only prudent. Not everyone needs to be on the Executive we also need suggestions for quality presenters, hall rentals, and modellers to help with our booths for raising awareness. So we hope to see you in Burlington for what promises to be an excellent program on April 7. Ron Johnson Superintendent *Before Diesels Photos from our October 17/17 Meet Retiring ID Superintendent, Richard Sparrow, expressed his thanks to all ID members for their support during his nine years of service in this role. Chuck Faist reviewing the finer points of Multi-Party Democracy with the audience, prior to announcing the ID election results. Newly elected ID Superintendent, Ron Johnson, thanked Richard Sparrow for his many years of dedicated service to the Division, prior to presenting him with a retirement gift on behalf of the membership. 4

5 Richard Sparrow receiving a retirement gift and plaque from the membership, as presented by Ron Johnson Dave Paterson, MMR, gave an interesting and comprehensive presentation on researching and scratchbuilding detailed, accurate structures. Dave Paterson, MMR, receiving a Certificate of Appreciation from Richard Sparrow, in thanks for his excellent presentation on scratchbuilding structures Al Welch (r) presented a thorough summary of the key aspects involved in sprucing up a brass steam engine. Here, he is being thanked for his efforts by James Whatley. Bob Winterton (l), discussing the finer points of structure modelling with Dave Paterson, MMR. Bob has also built many structures for his excellent home layout. Some examples of David Howard s excellent photographic prints were on display, along with the various contest entries by others David Howard (r) presented an informative slide show titled Steam Excursions, featuring his excellent 35 mm still photography. Dave covered railfan trips going back to the famous CNR 6218 runs in the early 1960s. Here, he is thanked by James Whatley. 5

The Smithville TH&B station was built in 1903 and has been beautifully restored inside and out, following its 1993 acquisition by the West Lincoln Historical Society. For more information, please see: The Smithville Station was a very comfortable, atmospheric place to work with excellent lighting. Right on cue after lunch, we were treated to a fast freight on the now CPR mainline between Hamilton and Welland. Wouldn t it have been nice to be able to see TH&B power once again? The train was headed by CPR 8849 and sister 8759, both General Electric ES44AC models, built in 2007 and 2005, respectively. Each of these 4400 HP units is geared for 75 MPH operation, weighs 416,000 lbs, and produces a continuous tractive effort of 145,000 lbs. Note especially the weathering patterns. 6

8 Modelling Day 18 February 2018 at Panko s Residence Recently retired ID Chief, Richard Sparrow continued to work on structures for his TH&B / NYC themed layout while Al Welch toiled away on a splendid TH&B boxcar kit. From l-r, Tony Kerr, Gerald Arends and Stan Conron appeared to have a very productive day. Stan brought another nice tool chest with him. Newly elected (actually annointed, ed.) ID Superintendent Ron Johnson (l) shared a busy structure modelling table with Harvey McIntyre. Really Past ID Super Bill Sharpe (l) worked on a NYC stockcar kitbash conversion, from his interesting March, 1997 RMC article, while Barry Kelly worked on an HO thingamajig kit (according to the photographer s meagre notes). 9 Andy Panko s layout is built on top of a former indoor swimming pool. The room has excellent. natural and artificial lighting The DCC equipment is centrally located on a well organized series of ventilated shelves. The former deep end features a workshop and stairs leading up to the interior of the layout The emerging city section of Andy s layout features a nice model of a Union type station Andy Panko (l) and his wife Domenica, receiving a handsome thank you plaque from ID Superintendent Ron Johnson.
