2 From the Yard Office Hi All, well Christmas is just around the corner and I know that we are probably all staying quite busy with our families. I hope that that you will be able to joins us for our Dec 10 th event. This month, we will have 2 enjoyable clinics for you at the library and for just this month, will forego our layout tour.john Bussard will be presenting a clinic on constructing a DPM building. On the face of it, it sounds pretty straight forward but if you ve built a few of them, you will know that there are some great tips and ideas that can make them real award winners as opposed to space fillers. As all of you know, John is as good as they come at building great structures and will give you some great tips and ideas that you will definitely want to use in the future. Michael Frizzell s friend and co-worker, Steve Rapp has a very nice slide presentation on Trains in Michigan. Steve has a great selection of slides that represent railroading in Michigan during the latter decades of the last century. I really look forward to his presentation. For those of you that have not yet attended a monthly event since our meeting room was renovated, you will be very pleasantly surprised. The Library has made some wonderful upgrades and additions for us which will greatly benefit our activities. This along with the addition of our new audio/visual equipment will make great improvements to our events. We are having our next 2018 Convention Meeting Tuesday night, January, 17th at 7:00PM at Aldingers. We really need Division members to get involved and as the time gets closer, it will be very important that we have your support that we need. The more people that are willing to support the convention, the easier it will be on all of us. Several of us have been involved in the last few conventions that we have hosted and we have a great group of experienced planners to help you if you get involved. We will not be able to use the library in January or February since they will be shut down for heavy construction and upgrades in the building. If you remember a couple of years ago, I hosted a meeting at my place and we did three clinics on various subjects using the layout. I believe that everyone had a pretty good time and thought that it was a worthwhile event. At this time, we are still planning the clinics that we will present. You still have time to request a clinic and if possible, I will be happy to include that. We had planned on holding our March event with Terry Davis at Olivet College but since the library will be closed in February, Terry has offered to hold his clinic presentation in February at Olivet College. There is a possibility that the library may not yet be opened by our monthly event in March and if so, will announce an alternative event location in plenty of time for your planning purposes. If you ever have an idea for a clinic that you think would be beneficial and enjoyable to our members, please let me know. I try to come up with something each month that you will enjoy and get some benefit from but I know that there are lots of things that are possible that I m not thinking of. 7 Andy s GOOP Clinic

Working with Ground Goop Hi All, this recipe is very basic.

Zonolite which is used for building foundation insulation.

9 Working with Ground Goop Hi All, this recipe is very basic. I will give you the basics and also discuss the specifics. Materials: 1. CelluClay paper mache. (about $24 at a Hobby Lobby or Michaels but use your 40% coupon!) 2. Zonolite which is used for building foundation insulation. An alternative is Vermiculite which is not as fine a product but is easier to find. I bought a very large (over 3' tall) bag of Zonolite from a builders supply for about $ Elmer's white glue. 4. Flat latex paint. I buy the cheapest that I can find (about $10 a gallon) and color to your liking. 5. Lysol (optional)

Additionally, I have been told that you can make it without the white glue and it still works well and is not quite as hard shelled when dry. I have not yet tried that. 2.

10 Mix as much as you want with the following proportions. 1.Equal parts CelluClay and Zonolite. I actually ballpark it with good results. The following two materials should also be of equal parts to each other but I have found that just ballparking it is fine. Additionally, I have been told that you can make it without the white glue and it still works well and is not quite as hard shelled when dry. I have not yet tried that. 2. Add paint and after mixing add more if needed. All you need to do is add enough so the gray coloring of the paper mache disappears. Extra paint won t hurt anything. 3. Add white glue. (see above) 4. If you will not be using it all at one time and will be keeping some, it is wise to add a capful of Lysol to the mix to help stop mold from forming while being stored. I understand it will store for months. I have some that is 3 weeks old and still just like it was when mixed. Use a mixing bowl and heavy spoon or spatula and mix the material. Watch for little gray paper pieces as you mix and make sure that they all disappear into your color.

11 I use a putty knife, spatula and sculpting tools (see image) to work the goop into the terrain. Depending on the final scene that you want, much of this will probably be covered by greenery and trees and there is no reason to have a very smooth flat finish.

Division 5 Officers - March March 2017 Superintendent -Andy Keeney hunter48820@yahoo.com Assistant Superintend - Mark Frechette Paymaster - Ron St. Laurent R.STLAURENT@sbcglobal.net Clerk & Editor - Mark Cowles nkpcowles@yahoo.com Webmaster - Craig Rosenberger The detailed scenery stage has begun on the 4' x 8' HO model railroad at the Ingham County Medical Rehabilitation Center that Roland Bunting, Norm Jolin, Fran Schafer, Ed Welch, and David Wentworth are helping to build. The cobblestone (Chooch) main city street is in place. Some of you have seen the Walther's Merchant Row store kit that Bob Truax so beautifully built. It is now glued down on the layout. Roland and Bob have nearly completed, using donated DPM kits, all the other Main St. stores (with interiors), and the whole town block, with interior lighting will be soon permanently attached. Roland has built one of his older Fine Scale Miniature kits, a coal supply dealer, and installed it on the layout. David has screwed in place one trackside business and has two other industries nearly ready for permanent installation. A pond with boats is finished. What we could still use are tons and tons of figures (people, dogs, cats, varmints) and vehicles (cars and trucks from the late 1940s to early 1960s) Anybody have a spare drunk, a woman with a broom, a warehouse worker, a fisherman, a smiling dog, gentle bear, a crate or barrel, fancy Ford, or Chevy, or rusty pickup truck? Consider donating even one item. It would be much needed and appreciated. Lansing area modelers have been extremely generous in their support of the project. The Train Club at the rehabilitation center has received donations of over 50 pieces of rolling stock, 6 engines (including 4 with sound), an NCE Power Cab, and enough great structure kits to build out the layout. Thank you for thinking about us if you have any detail parts you can spare. A couple of other things. An unpainted Proto 2000 GP20 has been donated. Center residents in the Train Club have voted to have it painted in a green and white scheme (MSU influence!) and lettered for that infamous Dobie &Okemos RR. Anyone out there with diesel painting experience want to take on a gratifying project? Since most of the residents are in wheelchairs we want to make the layout a stimulating visual and audio experience built to the highest standards. Anybody have an extra Miller Engineering flashing building/advertising sign. Or, a sound chip of factory sounds or thunder storm. Also, we could use 4-6 Walthers 1950s era street lights. We have 2 sets of Tomar crossing flashers and a LogicPro flasher/detector. Anyone with electrical expertise interested in helping to install them?
