Allied Tool is a freelance model of a small manufacturing company that grew from production in a home basement to a new building. Assume a gentleman starts assembling gauges in his basement and the business grows until he builds an assembly building next door and uses his home as an office for the business. As long as he is growing he decides to bring the near by railroad siding in for easier shipments and deliveries. Allied Tool has an abundance of details. In addition to two separate buildings there are two loading docks, one covered and one open, four different types of roofing material (real cedar shingles for the original house), a water storage tank, and a sign with the company name. Considering all the detail the model is an excellent size. Small enough to fit on the average size layout or detailed enough for a siding on a large layout. The model measures 7 3/4" X 4" with room for a railroad siding between the buildings. We feel Allied Tool turned out as a beautiful model that will be at home on any layout. We strongly recommend reading the entire direction sheet before assembly. There are two separate buildings attached by a bridge or walk way. Almost all the pieces are tab and slot construction. The windows are the peel and stick type. The model has four different types of roof material. All are included except the black roll roofing. Laser cut pieces are held on the parts sheet by tiny tabs. Remove each part by carefully running a hobby knife over the tabs then punching the piece out. White carpenters glue, a hobby knife, a pair of tweezers, and some sandpaper are the basic tools needed to assemble the model. All pieces should be test fit without paint or glue to familiarize yourself with the model. Both sides of the walls should be painted to prevent warping. If a piece does warp allow the paint to dry and it should straighten out. Too much glue can cause a piece to warp and if the glue sets while the piece is distorted you will have a difficult time assembling the model. Take your time and enjoy our model. It should be a great addition to your layout. Page 1

1. Start with the house. Locate the two floors, ceiling, and exterior walls on the parts sheet. The house has horizontal clapboards and the factory building has vertical siding. There are four vertical braces holding the floors and ceiling apart. They are marked on the parts sheet but check the height anyway before assembling the model. The two braces together should come to second floor ceiling height. Test fit all the parts without using glue. Once you are satisfied with the fit glue everything together. Use brace to properly locate roof 2. Assemble the roofs. The roof material is 1/16" flat material. The underside of the roof at the gable ends will have to be tapered with sandpaper for a proper fit. Sand the bottom edges of the roof and test fit the pieces on the tabs. Glue the pieces when you are satisfied with the fit. The shed roof over the small one story section of the building has a second small roof section where the loading dock sticks out beyond the building. This roof fits under the "arrow" shaped piece on the loading dock side of the building. There is a slot under the arrow, but to help locate this section of roof remove the brace cut from 1/32" material shown in the drawing. Do not glue the brace at this time but hold it under the two roof to make certain they are properly aligned. 3. The factory. The factory has vertical board and batten siding. Locate the pieces on the parts sheet and cut them out. Cut the three floors from the 1/16" flat material sheet. The first floor has a wing that sticks out for the small attached room. The first and second floor are held apart by two braces with tabs and matching slots in the floor and ceiling. The second floor and top ceiling are held apart by four braces that fit in the corners. Notice the pattern of slots in the floors and ceiling. Glue the first and second floor together first, then the outside walls. Next glue the four braces in the corners for ceiling. Next glue the ceiling in place and glue the third floor or clearstory in the slots in the ceiling. Page 2

Taper slightly for a proper fit 4. Next install the roof planes on the factory. The roof planes are 1/16" flat material. The tabs in the side walls fit in the slots in the roof. The bottom of the roof peaks in the gables need to be tapered with sandpaper for a proper fit. Check where the main roof fits against the clearstory. That section of the roof may also need to be tapered slightly. Top of bridge decking Area stairs attach Glue joist even with inside of cut outs for posts Cut three joist to go between long joist 5. The bridge between the buildings. Locate the decking material on the 1/64" material sheet. Cut the border away from the parts sheets and leave the decking pieces attached to the border. It is very important to notice the different pattern of cut outs for posts on opposite sides of the deck. One side has four cut outs for posts and the other side only has three. The side of the deck with the four cut outs will be the side with the steps. Take the two buildings and face them toward each other with the sides where the bridge attaches opposite each other. Hold the bridge between the two building where it will go. If the house is on your left and the factory on your right the side with the four cut outs will be toward you. The narrowest space between the cut outs will be on the left. On the house side the bridge goes into a blank wall. The stairs run from the bridge to the door which is lower and to the left of the bridge. If you are still not sure remove the bridge sides from the 1/32" parts sheet and hold them next to the decking and locate where the stairs will go. Once you are certain which way the decking goes locate the slats on the 1/32" material sheets. The slats must be cut to proper length. Cut two slats the full length of the decking surface. Glue the slats or floor joist just inside the cut outs for the posts. Make certain all the decking slats are glued to the joist. Once the border around the decking is cut off the joist will be the only thing holding the flooring together. Cut three joist to fit between the two long joist and glue one at each end and one in the middle. Page 3

6. After the glue thoroughly dries on the bridge decking take the piece and turn it face down on a hard cutting surface. Take a razor knife and run it over all the tabs holding the border to the decking. Once the border is removed you will have a bridge floor with individual decking boards. 7. Next install the bridge railing and sides. Remove the sides from the 1/32" material sheet. There are two pieces for each side. Glue the side with the three posts together lining up the posts and the top and bottom boards. Everything should lineup except the boards creating the cross buck design. Repeat the process with the other side which has four posts. After the glue has set test fit the sides on to the deck. The posts`should fit in the cut outs on the deck. The deck material should slide in above the bottom board on each side. Find and remove the three roof braces from the 1/16" flat material sheet. Glue the bottom board of each side to the long joist on the underside of the deck. Evenly space and glue the three roof braces in place with two of the braces close to the ends. 8. Stairs to bridge. Locate the 1/64" decking material for the platform. Use the same technique on this deck that was used on the bridge deck. Glue 1/32" slats or floor joist perpendicular to the floor decking and inside of the cut outs for the rail post. Glue the two outside rail and post sections together with the section with the notch in the rail is on the inside closest to the platform. Next glue the stair treads and deck material between the rail stringer and the stringer that will be against the house. Make certain that the stringer against the house stops short of the cut out in the deck for the porch rail. If its too long cut it short. Glue the two side rails together making sure the "E" shaped rail or the one with only one post is on the inside. The full outside rail will fit in the notch in the adjacent rail and the "E" shaped rail will fit against the post. Inside rail fits next to notch Outside rail fits in notch Page 4

9. Glue the steps to the bridge. The rail on the steps gets glued to the post on the bridge and the notch in the top of the stringers get glued to the bottom edge of the joist under the bridge. 10. Window assembly. The windows are peel & stick. Stick the razor knife in the back corner of the window sashes or window frames and peel off the back piece of paper. Stick the top sash to the frame first. Then stick the glazing to the top sash. Next stick to bottom sash to the lower part of the top sash frame and then the glazing to the bottom sash. The lower sashes can be displayed fully or partially open. Next press the unit into the appropriate opening in the building. Even though the windows and doors are peel and stick it doesn't hurt to put a thin strip of glue around the frame of the building wall. This can be especially helpful on the larger door units. 11. All windows get glazing but to keep the drawing from becoming too confusing they are not shown. The doors get a solid piece of material behind them. The double doors and the large garage door get scribed material and the single doors get smooth 1/64" material. The top windows on the double doors get glazing. Page 5

12. Assemble the front steps for the house. Remove the decking material with the border and glue the joist strips to the bottom as was done with the other platforms. The joist must be cut to length. Glue the joist perpendicular to the floor boards and inside of the notches for the post. Glue the two outside rail and posts sections together making sure the post with the notch is on the inside toward the house. Cut the border off the decking and glue the decking to the outside rail section and the inside stringer. Glue the two stair treads on next. Glue the two sections of side rail together. The one shaped like an "E" goes on the inside. The one with the post on each end goes on the outside with the narrower post fitting into the slot on the outside rail. The "E" shaped rail fits against the solid outside rail. 13. Water tank. Locate the three round pieces on the 1/32" parts sheets. The four braces are also on the 1/32" parts sheet. The braces are glued in the slots of the round pieces. The outside edges of the braces need to be flush with the outside of the round sections. Glue the pieces together and allow the glue to dry completely. After the glue dries sand the outside edge to make the piece as perfectly round and smooth as possible. Remove the outside of the water tank from the 1/64" parts sheet. This piece differs from the decking material. Each slat is held to the next slat with tiny tabs. This allows the piece to wrap around the tank frame. Cover the round sections of the frame and the slats with glue. Gently wrap the water tank cover around the frame. If your lucky it won't break. If it does break just hold the pieces together as you continue wrapping the cover around the frame. Once you get it wrapped around the frame use a twist tie off a plastic bag to hold it around the frame until the glue dries. Sand any gluey finger prints off once the glue dries. Cut the flat platform and frame from the 1/64" parts sheet. Cut and glue four 1/16" X 1/ 16" boards to go on the bottom of the platform. After the glue dries cut and remove the decking as with other platforms. Find the 4 water tank braces on the 1/32" material parts sheet. Glue the pieces together that have diagonal braces in opposite directions. Glue the pieces perpendicular to the 1/16" X 1/16" boards under the decking. apply the two diagonal braces to the large end of the tank brace. Glue the round scribed top to the top of the water tank. Glue the square assess hatch on last. Page 6

14. Remove the frame and braces from the 1/32" material parts sheets for the company sign. Glue the brackets between the first and second vertical brace in on either side. Make certain the frame is`above the bottom of the braces. Very carefully remove the company name from the 1/32" parts sheet and glue them to the frame. 15. Glue the bridge to each building by placing the tabs on the bridge into the slots in each building. The stairs go on the house side and there are no tabs or slots on the stairs. Make sure the buildings are parallel to each other before the glue dries. After the glue dries on the bridge glue the roof planes in place by inserting the tabs on one end into the factory and gluing the roof to the top bridge braces. Install the small roof over the stairs. Glue it to the post on the steps, the house roof, and the bridge roof. 16. Follow the same method assembling the loading docks as was used on the other platforms. Glue joist or 1/32" material against the side that will go next to the house and the cross buck material on the outside edges. The platform with the two notches goes with the full height posts and attaches to the house. The platform with the stairs attaches to the factory. Page 7

17. Install the chimney in the middle of the house roof. The base of the chimney will have to be tapered more to fit the pitch of the roof. Install the roof shingles next. On this model we used real cedar shingles on the house roof and three tab paper shingles on the factory. Roll roofing on the walkway and shed roof of the house and the metal roof on the shed roof of the factory. There is enough material in the kit to this except there is no roll roofing. For the roll roofing we just cut strips of black paper. If you use this pattern apply the roll roofing to the walkway first and let the paper run up on the roof of the house. Run the cedar shingle up to the roof valley between the walkway and house and cut the cedar shingles to create the valley. When installing the paper shingles start at the bottom with the first coarse upside down. Then install the next coarse on top so the wood roof does not show through the slots in the shingles. Cut a long strip of the paper roofing material to use as the ridge cap. The cedar shingles come with their own starter strip. Use it under the first coarse of shingles. Ridge shingles are included. Notice the cap or ridge shingles are two different widths. Use a wide one and a narrow one opposite each other and alternate along the ridge. Install the loading docks. Glue the loading dock on the house in the corner as shown with the post up under the roof. Install the loading dock by the factory with the stairs running down behind the metal roof with the water tank. Cut the corner boards to length and install them on all corners. Install the roof over the garage door by inserting the tabs on the braces (1/32" material) in the roof and wall siding. There is no tab or slot for the roof to fit into so just glue it to the side of the building. Install the "Allied Tool" sign last as it is the most fragile part of the model and we don't want to handle it any more them necessary once the sign is installed. Page 8

18. Install the water tank over the metal roof. Glue the front porch and roof by the front door. There are no tabs for the porch. Glue the two brackets under the platform going up to the walkway. The brackets have tabs that fit in slots in the wall. 19. Foundation. All the foundation pieces are tab and slot. The foundation pieces are not marked but no two pieces are the same size. Match them up with the side they go under. Test fit the pieces and then glue them together. The foundation height is higher than necessary. Trying to add to the foundation is more difficult than cutting some off. It is recommended the foundation be set on your layout where you expect the model to go and then leveled up. This should be done before gluing the buildings to the foundation. The legs of the loading docks are shorter than the foundation. Cutting the foundation to the correct elevation and adding a small footing under the legs of the loading dock should give the most realistic appearance. Page 9
