On August 13th, I stopped at a Canadian Tire Gas Bar to fuel my car. At time of payment, the clerk asked if I had a point card to which I replied that I still preferred coupon as they meant more for value than a plastic card that you don t know the value. She then told me they had taken all the coupons out of the Gas Bar, and did not know why. I left disappointed, but there was nothing she could do since she had no coupons to offer. A couple of days later, on August 16th, I stopped at another Canadian Tire Gas Bar for fuel. At time of payment, same question, same response. The clerk then told me that Canadian Tire had abolished all coupons from Gas Bar. Walking away, I looked at the receipt and there was no longer a mention of CT money on the receipt. I figured there was something to investigate since I had heard the same story twice, from two different gas bar location. After a few calls, it was discovered that Canadian Tire has cancelled CT Money at Gas Bars throughout Canada effective immediately (Facebook August 17th). On August 29th, an update was published where it stated that New-Brunswick and Nova Scotia are the only provinces where Canadian Tire Petroleum has discontinued issuing paper Canadian Tire Money. Maritime Provinces appear to be the testing ground for some of the corporation s initiatives. The point card was first introduced in Nova Scotia in The product coupons and multiplier coupons were removed in the Maritimes before being removed from circulation in other provinces. Could this be the end of an era? Time will tell, but it appears the e-card or point card is being promoted heavily in ways to replace the coupons. are still two Montreal meets, one more Torex in November and East coast meets to attend and maybe win one of the club trucks being given away as door prizes. Write-ups for the past meetings are featured later in this newsletter. The swap meet this year, although the attendance was a little low, included an energetic club meeting. A number of actions and proposals were made and discussed to promote the club to its members and to non-members. One idea that has been acted upon already was the preparation and distribution of a permanent membership card to enable members to identify themselves as paid-up members of the Canadian Tire Coupon Collectors Club. Members on electronic newsletter will receive their cards in the regular mail. As the weather cools, it s again time to take stock of where we are and where we are going. This applies both to our personal lives and hobbies and to our collective hobby. An inventory of our collection is always a good activity. It lays out where we are in our collection and what we have to do to achieve our collecting goals. Goals are of prime importance since they give us direction and focus in our collecting activities. Goals are also important for organizations like our club in that we need short term goals and long term goals to ensure our club remains relevant to collectors now and in the future. Meetings are great places to discuss the direction the club and I welcome any and all comments from members on the future direction of the club. All organizations evolve and change to meet changing conditions and we must adapt to the changing times. As we finalize the newsletter, we re informed of the passing of Cheryll Cameron, Stew s wife. She was diagnosed with a cancer not too long ago and lost her battle. Cheryll was always supportive of Stew s involvement with our Club, attended and also hosted meetings. Our condolences, thoughts and prayers for Stew and his family during this difficult period. Sandy Lipin

As part of the annual RCNA convention, a tradition is in place where club members can meet, enjoy breakfast and share information about successes, how to grow their club and be a ressource for information. The RCNA has over 60 member clubs and receive over 24 monthly journals from some of those clubs. This shows the potential we can reach by attending such events and sharing information. The breakfast is also an opportunity to hand out a few club literacy awards, such as best local club newsletter (given to the Edmonton Numismatic Society for newsletter Planchet) and best newsletter for regional clubs (awarded to Association Numismatique Francophone du Canada for their newsletter). Another nice feature of the breakfast is the guest speaker. Every year, speakers entertain club representatives on various topics. This year, France Waychison was the guest speaker and her topic was: How my husband got me interested in numismatics. France s husband is Bill Waychison, well know collector and former RCNA president, who is still active in the hobby. France talked about her background not necessarily tied to collecting, although mother was a history teacher and father had an accumulation of stamps. As a young lady, she met Bill who never shared anything about his collecting interest. She continued by telling stories on her first trip to a coin show where they never made it because of weather conditions and all sorts of experiences along the way. When she finally made it to some coin shows, she had little interest in collecting until she saw a Spruce Dollar. As she was seeking more details about her latest discovery, she received an invitation to attend the Wooden Club Breakfast the next morning. At the breakfast, she got to meet some wooden token collectors and the interest started. In a short period of time, she accumulated in binders some wooden tokens. She then put the hobby aside while raising the family. Once the kids were old enough, she wanted to get into the hobby again, but could not find her famous binder. She was disappointed and tried to convince herself it was not a big deal, but she cared so much that it was a sign she had to rejoin the hobby and rebuild a collection. Her speech contained a lot of anecdotes and humorous stories that we CLUB DELEGATEs BREAKFAST RCNA by Jacques Poitras - M poitras8491@rogers.com could all relate to. She then shared a few things about her interest in attending coin shows, such as the annual RCNA convention. First of all, the social aspect, pointing out that the bourse floor is not for social, but to work. Work hard looking through the various binders and boxes from merchants. But you still get to meet interesting people and get to ask those questions to experts. Spousal activities where you can exchange with other spouses who are in the same situation as you. A crazy spouse interested in coins. And you also get to make new friends from all over the country and more. There is an historical aspect in collecting, something that needs to be preserved. In larger shows, such as the RCNA, there are activities prepared like city or historical tours. We have a country that has a lot to see and a lot of history and it s a great chance to be able to do those tours and learn. Before concluding, she talked about a sensitive topic, but in all fairness, it is by far the most important one, the financial aspect of your collection. You need to keep in mind that money used for your collection is part of family income and more information should be shared. It is important that you know what is included in the collection, you may want to get the partner involved when cataloging or doing your inventory. Spouses will take care of home and family, but they also need to take care of the collection. If you get the spouse involve, he/she may gain interest and help to find those missing pieces in your collection. Have spouses attend local club meetings or shows. They can help entertain or volunteer if needed. And keep in mind, should you move to a different world before your spouse, they will be stuck with your collection. If he/she knows people you can trust, they can help with disposal of your collection at fair value. Something we often forget. Thanks France for sharing your story. It was very interesting and encouraged me to register my wife to attend next year s show in Mississauga. And for sure, we ll attend the Club Delegates Breakfast for another inspiring guest speaker. CANADIAN TIRE COUPON COLLECTORS CLUB 25 YEARS WITH RCNA by Jacques Poitras - M poitras8491@rogers.com As part of the annual convention, the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association holds an award presentation ceremony following the annual general meeting. A number of awards and distinctions are being given, and the RCNA also takes time to recognized long standing continuous membership. This year, our Club has being recognized for being a member for 25 consecutive years. Norm Belston accepted the certificate on behalf of the Club. The Collector 3 Vol. 27 No. 4, 2017

Torex meeting - JUNE 23rd, 2017 by Sandy Lipin - M sandylipin@gmail.com A small group met at the Hyatt Hotel on King St in Toronto for the June CTCCC meeting in conjunction with the summer Torex meet. As usual most got there before 9am, however, that was the only thing that was usual at that meeting. We started with the agenda items, but at that moment, Brian (owner/operator of the Torex show) ushered in a young women. She introduced herself as Katie Ryersen from Canadian Tire head office from the Corporate Communication department. I had previously been informed that the Corporation had a surprise for the club and it would be revealed at this meeting. Katie was here to deliver the surprise. She introduced herself and passed out a new CTC 150th commemorative 10 note in a plastic holder to each member present. The plastic holder explains some of the security aspects of this new 2017 note. In addition each note was counter-signed by Stephen Wettmore. She also presented three framed, signed notes for the club president and the two vice-presidents. Katie discussed the program and expressed great interest in the club. She was, of course, further educated by Roger Fox and others on the club and what we, as a national, bilingual club were all about. In appreciation of the Corporations gift to the club and to Katie herself as a speaker at our meeting she was offered a membership in the club at our expense. She was given the member number A short while later we had the meeting draw for the truck with Bill Symes drawing the winning number from the box. Guess who won the truck our newest member Katie! During the meeting numerous people entered the room and we signed up another new member from North Bay. In appreciation for many years of giving the club a free room for our meetings and the occasional table on the bourse floor it was decide to award Brian a free membership in the club. This will give him a newsletter where he can see and read the pictures and reports we write after the meetings. He has always been a very strong supporter of our club. The next Torex meeting is November 18th in Toronto and there is always room for more members to attend, remember, there is always something good going on at these meetings. Group picture from Torex, with everyone holding the new CTC coupon The 2017 Swap Meet was held last August in Deep River at Sandy s cottage. Summary of the meeting, information and pictures are on page 6 and 7 of this newsletter. A big Thank You to our president Sandy for hosting the event and thanks to all who helped out to make it a success. Once again, we left with good memories and looking forward to up-coming events. As we wrap-up the 2017 edition, we are turning our attention to next year s Swap Meet. Members are invited to gather in Edmundston, New-Brunswick next July as we ll host a 3 day Swap Meet event in our great city. The CTCCC SWAP MEET by Jacques Poitras - M poitras8491@rogers.com Details are being worked out to confirm exact location and date. As you may be aware, the RCNA convention for 2018 will be held in Mississauga in August, therefore we have to move our Swap Meet even earlier allowing members to attend both events. Watch our website and Facebook page for more detail as they become available. The next newsletter will have all the details listed. We look forward to seeing you next July. 5 RCNA meeting - july 22nd, 2017 by Jacques Poitras - M poitras8491@rogers.com A good crowd came out to our CTCCC meeting during the annual RCNA convention. We had requested from the RCNA a longer period, and also a slight change in time so members could attend our meeting and not be in conflict with other groups also meeting during the convention. It turned out to be a positive change since 8-9 members attended all or part of our meeting while being able to be part of other specialty groups. THANK YOU RCNA for adjusting the schedule. As in previous years, we had a full agenda for everyone s needs. Due to other commitments, the president was not able to attend, so Jacques Poitras lead the meeting by thanking everyone for attending and welcoming new members or potential new members. We then followed by talking about our financial status and giving an update on memberships. It was noted that sharing a table on the bourse floor was helping to recruit new members. As we expect, there are a lot of collectors out there that are not a member of our club. Jerome then gave us an update on the dissociation with the Bilodeau Guide, but not to be concerned since a new guide would replace the void. The guide will be called the Canadian Tire Numismatic Catalogue and will be launched very soon. Jerome also talked about the new CTC coupon to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Canada. We are aware of a few replacement coupons in circulation. For our pleasure, Jerome opened an uncirculated bundle that he had and showed the group how he was scanning through a bundle. He looked over the first 100 coupons, the second 100 coupons. And kept suspense until the very last part of the bundle, to conclude no replacement coupons were in this bundle. The new coupons created some excitement in the general public with very positive comments, leaving collectors wondering how great the Corporation s 100th anniversary coupons will look as they will turn the page on the first century in a few years with great stories around the coupons over the years. In line with the Canada 150, a die-cast was produced and sold at Canadian Tire stores. Some collectors visited many stores and could not find any die-cast, wondering if enough were produced. Jerome informed us that store owners were not required to sell the die-cast, therefore some owners opted not to receive any, stating that enough die-cast were produced and are still available in some stores. We talked about the 2018 membership cards and also encouraged members to renew their membership by visiting the table on the bourse floor, by attending the Swap Meet, or by contacting Ghislaine. Jacques Poitras talked about the latest newsletter and some of its content. It was noted there was a great article making comparison between Canada and Canadian Tire, great in depth research by Stew Cameron. Before we took a break, we mentioned the up-coming meetings, the Swap Meet in Deep River, the Nova Scotia meeting and the Montreal meeting in September and November as well as the Torex meeting next November. We also had the draw for the door prize (25th anniversary of die cast), won by Marion Munro. We took a short break and encouraged members to view the few items on sale as part of silent auction. The auction sold a few lots and proceeds were given to the Club. Returning from the break, Jacques Poitras covered an educational segment. The power point presentation gave a little history on the gas bar and store coupons, how it started, the various printing companies, all the signing officers and titles. He then elaborated a little on the gas bar coupons and the store coupons up to the newest coupon from series S34. As a way to promote the club, he finished his presentation by showing some of the other Canadian Tire collectables such as die-cast, catalogues, pins, membership cards, phone cards and so on. All those collectors are united under one group, the CTCCC and are active with an internet page, a facebook page, regular meetings across the country, attending coin shows, a quarterly newsletter, and a great group of friends. Thanks to everyone who attended and looking forward to see you in our future events. View of the bourse floor with many dealers and lots of collectors visiting. 6 SWAP MEET - AUGUST 4-6th, 2017 by Jacques Poitras - M poitras8491@rogers.com Our meeting at the Swap Meet started shortly after 1pm on Saturday August 5th. Our president and host thanked everyone for attending the event. Swap Meet is a great opportunity to gather Canadian Tire collectors that can share knowledge with colleagues, sell / purchase / trade to fill holes in your collection. It is also a good time to hold a meeting to have discussion that can guide the executive for strategic and long term objectives for the Club. An agenda was prepared with topics to be discussed with members. Finance our club is very healthy. We have not seen significant changes in our revenue and or expenses in the last few years with the exception of a couple of initiative such as die-cast. We are a non-profit association and we need to make sure we continue our careful approach in managing finances. We cannot turn large profit, and some benefits should be returned to members on occasion. Things that will be considered is more advertisement (i.e. Canadian Coin News) to promote our club, maybe have more active presence at coin shows (kiosque), possibility of renewing membership for 2 years and get the 3rd year free, hold an annual banquet as part of Swap Meet week-end, etc. If you have suggestion, you can always share with members of the executive committee. For sure, we want to continue our on-going regular meetings (RCNA, TOREX, ONA, Montreal, Nova Scotia) and more if possible. We still have 75 die cast of our 25th anniversary. Initiatives are in place to promote them, such as draws at meetings and also consideration for those who submit research articles. If you do not have yours, now is the time to get one. Contact Ghislaine for arrangements. Membership Membership cards were printed at a different supplier. No significant changes in cost. Ghislaine had provided information regarding our membership. As of June 30, we had 216 members of which, 141 were receiving paper newsletter black and white, 13 paper newsletter in color, 48 electronic version and 14 spousal members. The number is down slightly from last year, but a good recruiting week-end during the RCNA will close the gap. Needless to say, our members are essential for the future of the club and we need to maintain our focus to promote our club and recruit members. Bilodeau Guide Group was informed that Bilodeau Guide ceased operation on July 5th. Jerome has launched a new publication called Canadian Tire Numismatic Catalogue that will fill the void created. Printed copies are available, but also an electronic version. Values for coupons will be updated on regular basis as well as low and high serial numbers. The publication will remain independent from the Club as it was the case with the Bilodeau Guide. Newsletter Editor and assistant editor have worked together to produce the 3 newsletter this year. Always a race with deadline as most material comes-in in last few weeks prior to printing. We would like to see more members submit articles. We have regular contributors but we are convinced everyone has a story to share or a discovery they inquire and seek feedback. Reminder that classified ads are for members to use. 150 Events Canadian Tire has issued a couple of items to commemorate Canada 150th. First one was the die-cast and the second one was given to store customers between June 30th and July 2nd. The coupon attracted a lot of positive feedback. As for the die-cast, it was sold in stores for those that requested die-cast. Unlike the other die-cast, this one was not mandatory for every store. As for the Club, we ve used our die-cast from our 25th anniversary as door prizes to meetings. Die-cast Canadian Tire has been listening to feedback from customers and collectors. Therefore they will complete the annual series of die-cast. Later this year, you will be able to find a #5 of series 5 in all the stores, in time for the Christmas season. Make sure to get yours. Pins a member asked if the publication of the pins catalogue could include prices or values for the pins, and maybe only consider pins issued by the Corporation. There are a lot of pins available but not all were issued by the Corportation. 25 year recognition / RCNA Award it was noted one member had been accidentally missed from the list of 25 years of membership. Certificate and pin will be hand-delivered later in August. At the same time, we have received a certificate of recognition for our 25 years of consecutive membership with the RCNA, our national association that oversees our hobby. 25th anniversary draw as mentioned before, every meeting we are holding a draw from members attending the meeting. The lucky winner was Jacques Ouellette. Regular meetings just a recap that we have group meetings in various parts of the country. Those are listed on our web page, in our newsletter and often promoted on our Facebook page. If you are having a meeting, let our people Group picture taken Saturday afternoon in Deep River, Ontario Jacques Ouellette winner of door prize, a 25th anniversary die cast. 7 SWAP MEET - AUGUST 4-6th, Continued by Jacques Poitras - M poitras8491@rogers.com know so we can promote the events. We usually meet at the Ontario Numismatic Association show, the TOREX events in spring and fall, the RCNA in July/August, four times per year in Montreal, a meeting that draws 20+ member every meeting, four times per year in Nova Scotia (led by Stew Cameron), and of course our annual Swap Meet event. Plan to attend as many as you can. Auction we just completed the summer auction. Doug will be sending the coupons if not already done. We will have regular auctions in the next newsletter, but want to point out that we will have a Donation Auction in the April 2018 newsletter. Any material you want to send for the auctions will be accepted by Doug Adams. Thanks for the great work with the auction. Director s report not a lot to report in general. However Stew had some inputs from members in his regions for ways to promote our hobby, our Club and recruit members. 1 Have decals that can be stuck on a car, or bags. Where we could see member of Coupon Collector Club. 2-Membership cards to be considered as a business card, not so much to display. Should be a size that fits in a wallet and can be used to identify members. RCNA has opted for permanent cards a few years ago, a card that you can carry with you at all times. 3- Signs 8X10 signs, maybe laminated that could be posted at Canadian Tire to promote the club, the meetings in the area, or maybe list the contact information of the Club. Easy way to obtain visibility. 4- Flyers Maybe the Corporation could put our Club contact (web-site, or purpose of the Club) in a flyer, maybe a few times a year, or specific prints. Those great points brought by Stew activated some discussion about promoting our club. We should consider more advertisement in numismatic publication. Maybe submit articles to US coins and paper money publication (considering the ANA magazine, or Coin World). If you have local coin clubs, maybe attend and talk about our club and our coupons. There must be collectors everywhere that don t know we are that active, and it may prompt them to sign-up. Club will also investigate is they could prepare an exhibit in next year s RCNA. In the past, the Club was denied participation because the competition is open for individual members and not club members. If space is available, maybe we could have a exhibit that will not be considered for the competition, but could still help to promote our club. It was noticed that a few tables were empty in Boucherville, but we have no information if it s someone who had a last minute change of plans, or if they did not get enough display to fill all the tables. Future Swap Meet Edmundston, New-Brunswick will host next year s swap meet. Jacques Ouellette and Jacques Poitras will work out the details. Since the RCNA will be held in August next year (instead of July), we need to consider a different date for the event. Once details are confirmed (exact date, and exact location) we will update members via our social media and also in future newsletter. Meeting concluded at 3:00 with the group pictures. During the week-end, members were able to share information regarding gift cards, store and gas bar coupons. We did not have a formal education segment, but since our theme for this year was varieties, Don Bradt had provided some handouts on the varieties he discovered in the gas bar coupons in series CTC 7 and 8. Varieties discovered included the Bay of Fundy, Atlantic Sperm Whale (white spot in Atlantic Ocean), the Ungava Island, not to mention the crosslet 4, Border dot 1, Chain, Face Dot 1, Broken Border 7, Double White Dots and so on. Those are documented in the Bilodeau Guides and have been published in various newsletters. Meals were prepared by a group of volunteer and everyone had a good time, returning home with good memories, already making plans for next summer. Thanks Sandy for your warm hospitality. Always a pleasure to be in Deep River. Some fun during social night. Friendly Poker game Lots of interesting discusion between members. The Collector 7 Vol. 27 No. 4, 2017

FALL NOVA SCOTIA MEETING- september 16th, 2017 by Stew Cameron - M scotiatechstew@gmail.com The Nova Scotia CTCCC Meeting was held on September, 16th, 2017 at the home of Mike and Shirley Hackett. Attending members were; David Dick, Mike Hackett, Bob Ronan, Mel Larsen, Dan McCormick and Stew Cameron. Special thanks to Mike and Shirley for hosting our meeting. It is a special time in their lives as they were preparing to move to a new residence the following weekend. The meeting was opened by Stew Cameron at 1:34PM. He welcomed all members, with a special welcome to our new member, Dan McCormick. Dan s wife is also a new member of the club, but was not able to join us today. Dan is president of the APNA, (Atlantic Provinces Numismatic Association). He came prepared with a binder of CTC money. He is very much interested in learning more about the collecting of CTC money and in promoting our club within his organization. The Show and Tell segment, which provides a time for everyone to show or talk about their new purchases, etc., was first on the agenda. Bob had nothing to report. Mike announced that he was selling his entire collection. He said that he would remain active and help promote the interests of the club where he could. Dan, being a new member, was quite content to sit back and learn what he could throughout the meeting. Dave announced that he was upset to hear that CTC money would no longer be passed out at the Gas Bars in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. This is another blow to our ability to collect CTC money in this area. Mel showed us a binder of collectables which included various coupons from other stores, etc. as well as some material on Government of Dominion of Canada War Victory Bonds. I followed with the showing of my new Canada coupon, signed by Stephen Wetmore. I passed around the new Canadian Tire Numismatic Catalogue and the Die-cast catalogue. I mentioned that these were available in electronic versions and to contact Jerome for ordering details. New business I went over the information that I noted from the annual Swap Meet, held in Deep River, Ontario. A special thank you to Sandy for the great time I had at this meet. I read a letter that I received from Customer Relations at Canadian Tire Corporation. This was a reply to a previous question I had on the demise of CTC money at the Gas Bars. Initially I was told that the Gas Bars should be giving CTC money out, but with the follow up letter they told me that I was not provided the correct information. In part it read:, Currently, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia are the only provinces where Canadian Tire Petroleum has discontinued issuing paper Canadian Tire Money. I presented Mel Larsen with his Die-Cast truck for his attendance at our last meeting. With no further new business to announce, the meeting was turned over to attending members for open discussions. Open Discussions were very brief. Mel questioned me on the four ideas he gave me to present at the Swap Meet. I reviewed the results with the members. I was pleased to tell him of a new permanent Membership Card being printed. Swap, Trade and Sell - This segment was a chance for Mike to sell some Die cast vehicles and some rare CTC money that he had. Our photo was taken and sales concluded at 3:50pm. If there are people reading this Newsletter and would like to become a member, please contact me. My contact information is on Page 2 of the Newsletter under the Atlantic Directors. To our members in Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and westward, our meetings are always open to you. If you are ever in the area, please give me a call. The next meeting will be held on 25 November at the home of Stew Cameron. Please see our listing under upcoming meetings for additional information. This will be the last scheduled Nova Scotia meeting for this year. I will be sending out notifications prior to the meeting. On the agenda will be a discussion of the planned dates for our 2018 meetings. Stew presenting Mel with his truck for attending our last meeting in June! 9 Montreal meeting - SEPTEMBER 23rd, 2017 by Jerome Fourre - CM jayfoure@ctccollector.ca On Saturday, September 23rd, a good meeting was held at the Roussin Community Center, which brought together 17 members. A festive atmosphere united all these beautiful people. Our President, Sandy Lipin of Kingston, Ontario, was present as well as several members from different regions of Quebec. The meeting always starts with friendly discussions and exchanges of all kinds. Then we started with the educational segment which, this time, included the latest Canadian Tire coupons discovered, such as: CTC-S32D16 -the CTC-S34-C17 & CTC S34-Ca17- the 95th anniversary coupon dated Sept. 7th and other coupons given in gas stations. The 3 new gift cards, the certificate that the club received from RCNA for a 25-year recognition with them, were also mentioned. All this projection on screen, all realized and commented by Jerome Fourre. In addition, he informed us of his dissociation with the Bilodeau Guide. However, he confirmed the creation of a brand new catalog titled Canadian Tire Numismatic Catalogue as well as the new Canadian Tire Die-cast Catalogue for Jerome gave us a preview of the new laminated permanent membership cards that can be brought with you at all times. By the way, it has nothing to do with the regular membership card that will continue to be issued. This card bears your name and membership number and may be inserted with this newsletter if the company that manufactures them meets the delivery deadline. Hopefully we will receive them in time for this newsletter. This card is printed in the same way as the Canadian Tire gift cards. Remember, since we celebrate Canada s 150th anniversary in our own way, it was decided to accumulate the names of the members who attend each meeting in order to make a draw at the end of the year. As with every meeting, a club truck is drawn among the members present, the latest one was won by Charles Barrette, member # 385 who was very proud of it. Bravo! Our half/ half draw in the amount of $ was won by Marc-André Lemire, member # 885. As usual, we ended our meeting with most of us heading out to our favorite spot, Teddy s Deli, for a great smoked meat lunch. Our next meeting is scheduled for November 11th. Anyone interested in attending is always welcome. See you there! Did you know? The first Canadian Tire Catalogue was printed on a road map in July It had a list of truck and car tires on one side and a small map of southern Ontario on the other. The THE VERY FIRST CATALOGUE by Jerome Fourre - CM jayfoure@ctccollector.ca 20,000 copies mailed to south-west Ontario addresses were so popular that J.W. and A.J. Billes had to hire two employees to take on the extra work and the mail order division was born!. The Collector 9 Vol. 27 No. 4, 2017

RECENT PUBLICATIONs by Jerome Fourre - CM jayfoure@ctccollector.ca Canadian tire numismatic catalogue I am very proud to introduce to you the new Canadian Tire catalogue for collectors. This Catalogue replaces the former Bilodeau Guide, Volume 1. The vast majority are printed by the Canadian Banknote Company and British American Bank Note. The preface has a brief biography of Ovide Bilodeau, a short history of Canadian Tire and Canadian Tire Money. Also included is information about the cataloging system, the printing and a description of grading paper money. In the first chapter, there are 90 gas bar notes described with photos, catalogue numbers, high and low serial numbers, quantities printed and the value for the five usual grades. The second chapter has more than 500 store notes making up the 34 different series, described with the latest prices and high and low serial numbers. All notes issued up until the end of July 2017 are included. In the next chapter, there are 90 different Sandy McTire notes described with photos, catalogue numbers, high and low serial numbers, quantities printed and the value for the five usual grades. 11 Collectors search many binders before they can find that missing coupons. This is the story of a member who spent countless hours, attended many shows was active on internet web site but could never fully complete his collection. This past summer, he decided to attend the Canadian Tire Coupon Collector Club meeting as part of the annual RCNA convention. When he walked in the room, he never imagined for a minute he would find this hard to find coupons. Looking in a members shoe box of coupons, he found that missing Gas Bar a rare find by Jacques Poitras - M poitras8491@rogers.com coupon from series one (a CTC1-D). The coupon has a story to tell from having circulated and it also has a new chapter making its way into a new collection. The collector had almost given up on acquiring this coupon, but now he s regained faith that missing coupons from your collection are out there. You just needs to keep looking and expand your contacts to get that hole in your collection filled. Attending meetings and shows are once again proving that you can always find something to add in your collection. 12 Ctc - CANADA 150 SPECIAL COUPON - CTC S34-C17 - recap by Jerome Fourre - CM jayfoure@ctccollector.ca Front of Canada CTC S34 C17 The coup that CTC managed by issuing this special note was a stroke of genius. Not only did they manage to get us collectors in a tizzy, but the general public was able to see for themselves that Canadian Tire Money is still available in the stores. Us collectors now have hope that they will design something special for their 100th anniversary in This year 2017 is their 95th anniversary. They are celebrating this year, but I personally am very anxious to see what they have in store for us in Take the time to really look at the note, it is a work of art in itself: The front with the micro-printing, the geometric designs, the use of gold leaf add-ons, to the mountain scene in the background along with the new Sandy McTire image and the use of the CTC logo and Canadian maple leaf in so many ways. The back has the same micro printing forming a distorted Canadian map. The large triangle on the left is made up entire- Back of Canada CTC S34 C17 ly of geometric designs with the leaf in small triangles. The rest of the back is made up of the CT triangle in varying sizes. Canadian Tire sent an envoy from Corporate Communications, Katie Ryerson, to the Toronto meeting at Torex on June 24th. She handed out several countersigned notes to Sandy Lipin for the club executive which Sandy graciously distributed. These notes were all from the second bundle ( to ) of notes. As for the actual notes, they were sent to stores across Canada for distribution on June 30th and July 2nd to any and every person that visited a store. On our Facebook page, members were asked to post their notes so that we could see where the numbers went. We knew that CT had said that 2 million notes were printed. Actually 2,330,000 have been confirmed so far. Being a former hi-lo guy, I started a spreadsheet to record the numbers. Here is a resume of that spreadsheet showing the distribution. It all depended on their sales volume at the time. Two confirmed replacements were found. One of them was found in a sealed bundle and was removed with the framers. The note replaced was , the replacement serial number is In a parallel bundle #699 was in its place and there was no replacement found in that bundle. The second replacement was and only one of its framers was available This one was given to a very lucky customer passing through a cashier at a store. As you can see both of these replacements are notes that were used as insert notes similar to the current practices used by the two Canadian banknote printers. No member came forth with any other replacement that was provable. If you have anything to add to this information please contact me. The Collector 12 Vol. 27 No. 4, 2017

The members were listed in the previous newsletter. However, we missed to recognize one who has been a member for the club for 25 years. Up until now most gift cards came glued to a presentation cardboard for hanging on the sales racks. They would eventually like to eliminate the cardboard like most of the other gift card retailers that use a two piece plastic card, which the customer breaks in two after purchasing the card and uses only the gift card portion and not the advertising portion. When broken in two there is an alpha-numeric number that ends up half on the top portion and half on the bottom portion. Our next new card is an RC (Refund Card) which has a black front versus the normal gray front that we are used to seeing. These cards are dated 06/17 and the latest gray cards issued in the rest of Canada are also dated 06/17. I learned that these black cards are only available in Saskatchewan. After a closer look at the back, I noticed that the warning, in bold lettering, This card will expire one year after date of issue. 15 October private auction teaser by Jerome Fourre - CM jayfoure@ctccollector.ca The private auction for the month of October has an unprecedented amount of quality notes and very rare replacement notes in it. From the CTC S4 series right up to the CTC S34 series. Some of the notes have never been offered in an auction before and may never come around again. See a sampling below of some of the ultra rare notes in this auction. There are also some spectacular errors and misprints going on the block also. It was impossible to get all the notes into one auction so I will have the continuation of this hoard in the next auction. There will be the largest collection of SNR notes ever before seen in the January 2018 auction. It is your chance to fill in some of the holes in your binders. The Collector 15 Vol. 27 No. 4, 2017
