The $1 green in this set is the only copy in existence of the $1 value in any condition. The buyer of this unique set of Transportation Tax stamps will be the only collector in the entire world to be able to put together a complete Newfoundland revenue collection. For sale by Private Treaty from the Chesapeake collection - $65,000 CLP London to London CLP6 is the greatest Canadian semi-official Air Mail rarity. This stamp was specially issued August 1927 for the London, Ontario to London, England flight. This private venture was sponsored by Carling Breweries Ltd., which offered a $25000 prize for the first Canadian to fly from London, Canada to London, England. A Stinson SM-1 monoplane was provided, christened Sir John Carling. Terrance B. Tully and James V. Medcalf were selected to be the pilots. On the morning of the 29th of August 1927, they took off from London, Ontario, but were soon forced to return because of thick fog they encountered over Kingston, Ontario. The flight was delayed until September 1, when another attempt was made and this time they reached Caribou, Maine, before they were forced to land. Again delayed by weather, they finally arrived at Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, 5 days later. From there they would make the flight across the Atlantic. On September 7 the plane set out from Harbour Grace but never arrived in London, England. The flight crashed and was never heard from again. (flight details quoted from the C.A. Longworth-Dames catalogue) Only 100 stamps were printed - 13 unused copies are known to have survived. Most have small faults. This stamp accompanied by 2006 Greene Foundation certificate of authenticity as well as 1987 Diena certificate and stamp signed by Diena on reverse. The copy sold in ReveNews #160 was priced at $75, CLP6 mint original gum, very light vertical crease virtually invisible from front, very minute soiling and couple minute spots on face at left. Beautiful fresh and bright colour. Current 2012 Unitrade catalog value for a mint hinged copy is $50,000 For sale by Private Treaty - First offered in October 2011 at $42,500. 4 1940 QUEBEC TOBACCO TAX STAMPS These attractive engraved tobacco revenue stamps were designed and printed by the American Bank Note Co for use in the province of Quebec to pay the 10% tobacco tax. The American Bank Note Co actually printed the self-adhesive decal type stamps, but none of the actual stamps have been seen by collectors. An exceptional article about these was published in the September 2003 issue of the Candian Revenue Society newsletter by Chris Ryan. From the American Bank Note Co records we know that only 1 sheet each of the 2c, 3c, 5c, 10c, 15c, 20c and 25c green Plate Proofs on card survived.
