CLP London to London - for sale by private treaty - CLP6 is the greatest Canadian semi-official Air Mail rarity. image 2 x original Stamp was issued August 1927 for the London, Ontario to London, England flight. This private venture was sponsored by Carling Breweries Ltd., who offered a $25000 prize for the first Canadian to fly from London, Canada to London, England. A Stinson SM-1 monoplane was provided, christened Sir John Carling - Terrance B. Tully and James V. Medcalf were selected to be the pilots - On the morning of the 29th of August 1927, they took off from London, Ontario, but were soon forced to return because of thick fog they encountered over Kingston, Ontario. The flight was delayed until September 1, when another attempt was made and this time they reached Caribou, Maine, before they were forced to land. Again delayed by weather, they finally arrived at Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, 5 days later. From there they would make the flight across the Atlantic. On September 7 the plane set out from Harbour Grace but never arrived in London, England. The flight crashed and was never heard from again. (flight details quoted from the C.A. Longworth-Dames catalogue) This stamp was acquired by the grandfather of the present owner while he worked at the London, Ontario post office in August The stamp has been tucked away from light since 1927 and the colour and condition are simply incredibly fresh. The gum is in mint never hinged condition. This is believed to be the finest quality CLP6 in existence. Only 100 stamps were printed and only 9 or 10 copies are known to have survived. Total cat. value $ $ QUEBEC TOBACCO TAX - Margin proof blocks of 16 These stamps were unknown until they first surfaced in They were printed by the American Banknote Co for use in 1940 to pay the 10% tobacco products tax in Quebec. Actual self-adhesive stamps were printed but have not been seen. An exceptional article about these stamps appeared in the September 2003 issue of the Canadian Revenue society. From the American Bank Note Co. records we know that 1 sheet of each of the plate proofs of 2c, 3c, 5c, 10c, 15c, 20c and 25c green survived. At the time we acquired the entire lot of proofs with the exception of the bottom right corner blocks of 12. This is the unique set of bottom margins blocks of 16. All but one with "ROTARY" or "FOR APPROVAL" markings at the bottom. The 5c, 10c, 15c, 20c and 25c all have printer's guides at the bottom as well. The 15c has a green circular stamp on the back reading "IN - American Bank Note Co. - manager's office - June 19, 1940" and the 5c has a partial red circular stamp on the back "GENE... It lies between Grassy River, at the head of a number of well-used routes from Hudson Bay, and Lake Athapapuskow. There is no additional postage stamp on the cover, which could mean that it was used for internal company communication. The CL40a is cancelled with an unlisted cachet "Western Canada Airways Ltd The Pas, MAN".
