2 Meryl Streep To Be Feted by Italy s Giffoni Film Festival For Children Streep will return to Giffoni after attending in 2001 ROME - Meryl Streep will be feted by Italy s Giffoni Film Festival for children, the unique cinematic holiday camp of sorts where kids, teens and young adults from all over the world watch movies, talk about them and judge them. Streep, who will return to Giffoni after attending in 2001, will receive the fest s new Giffoni Fellowship prize and also be the subject of a special dedicated sidebar during the 44th edition of the ever expanding event which will run July 18-27, 2014.At a Rome press conference Giffoni topper Claudio Gubitosi also announced a Marvel superheroes marathon; a new Genius is Different section dedicated to delving into role model figures such as Albert Einstein and Steve Jobs; a section dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall; and a celebration of the 125th anniversary of Charlie Chaplin s birth. The Southern Italian fest has been exporting its format around the world, most recently through a partnership with the Doha Film Institute which just launched its new Giffoni-like Ajyal Film Festival for the Young, the first edition of which ran Nov in Doha. The festival said the last edition attracted a record 200,000 festival-goers over 11 days, including 3,300 members of its popular jury, representing 41 countries. It attracted more than 500 national and international journalists, and online the web site attracted more than 1.3 million hits -- a dramatic increase compared to the previous year. Officials said the event is the most talked about film festival on Facebook surpassing even major mainstream festivals. Next year, the festival - which will use the theme "Be Different" - will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the 125th anniversary of the birth of Charlie Chaplin. The festival did not say whether Pope Francis might attend the event. At least year's event, Gubitosi attracted headlines when he said he'd like to invite the new pontiff to attend in Streep, who had previously attended Giffoni in 2001, will be honored with the Giffoni Fellowship Award.
