9 Use a Duncan Clear Glaze to apply a sparkling, protective finish to ware. Duncan offers a wide range of clear dipping and brush-on glazes. Which process is best for me? Duncan Clear Glazes provide a protective finish to your ware. Clear Dipping Glazes save time when glazing a high volume of projects and makes glazing large pieces fast and easy. Clear Brush-On Glazes offer a hands-on personal approach to glazing and offers excellent control of application. Available in: 4 and16 oz, 1 and 3.5 Brush On 1 and 3.5 Gallon Dipping DIPPING GLAZE - STEP-BY-STEP 1 1. Mix in Pail Mix with electric mixer for no more than two minutes until you see a vortex. Avoid touching edges of pail with the mixing blade. Use a stainless steel wire whisk to stir glaze after initial mixing. 2. Check Viscosity a. Submerge a TL497 Viscosity Cup into tank and fill with glaze. As you lift cup from glaze, begin timing. b. Stop timing when the steady stream of glaze begins to break. A range of seconds is normal. Add small amounts of water as needed to thin. 3a. Dipping with Hands a. Wearing protective gloves, use a smooth casual motion to submerge cone 04 bisque in glaze, covering approximately 90% of piece. Quickly lift ware out of glaze. Shake off ware to remove excess glaze and achieve uniform application. Let dry. b. Using same motion, dip unglazed portion, slightly overlapping glazed area for full coverage. Let dry. 3b. Dipping with Tongs a. Gently grasp cone 04 bisque with tongs and submerge in glaze covering entire piece. b. Quickly lift ware out of glaze. Shake ware to remove excess and achieve uniform application. Let dry. 4. Touch Up After ware is dry, use an SB807 Fan Glaze brush to touch up tong marks or any missed areas with glaze. Use a TL420 Palette Knife to shave off drips or runs to prevent airborne dust. 5. Fire Glazed Bisque Let ware dry thoroughly. Set ware securely on clean, sharp stilts in kiln. Of the Earth Designed by Suzie Shinseki, courtesy of Duncan Enterprises Materials Needed: Duncan Oh Four Bisque Lid for Vases Banded Vase Crystals Glazes CR 856 Ancient Woodland CR 858 Polynesian Lagoon CR 859 African Savanna Pure Brilliance Clear Glaze Brushes & Tools Signature Brushes SB 811 No. 8 Round SB 807 No. 6 Fan Glaze Instructions: 1. Wipe inside and outside of vase and lid with dampened sponge to remove any dust. 2. Shake bottle of Pure Brilliance Clear Glaze and pour needed amount into container. Add a little water to thin to a light cream consistency. 3. Pour into the vase and roll around to coat inside bottom and sides. Pour out excess. Use the No. 6 Fan Glaze brush to apply Pure Brilliance to inside of lid. Let dry. 4. Using the No. 8 Round brush, brush two coats of Ancient Woodland onto bottom of vase, top of lid and the very top section of vase, letting dry between coats. For the top section of vase, stagger the brush strokes where it will blend into the next color, giving a dripping appearance. Let dry. 5. Use the No. 8 Round brush to apply two coats of African Savanna just below the top section of Ancient Woodland down to the banded area in middle of vase. Let dry between coats. 6. Just below the African Savanna section and above Ancient Woodland on bottom of vase, brush on two coats of Polynesian Lagoon, butting up against the Ancient Woodland. Let dry. 7. Stir the bottom of the Ancient Woodland Crystals Glazes jar to loosen crystals. Paint a third coat over the lid, top and bottom portion of vase, making sure crystals are included with the glaze and onto vase. 8. Repeat process for third coats of African Savanna and Polynesian Lagoon sections. Let dry. 9. Stilt and fire to witness cone Embellish as desired. Instructions: 1. Wipe front and back of plate with damp sponge to remove any dust. 2. Place graphite paper onto plate then place pattern on top of graphite paper and trace over pattern lines with pencil. Remove pattern and graphite sheet. 3. Using No. 6 Round brush, paint in sun with Solar Flares, then, using the No. 10 Round brush, paint area surrounding sun in a circular pattern with Polynesian Lagoon. Let dry. Paint a second coating of each color and let dry. Make a few rough strokes around the outer edges of plate with Outer Space, following the same circular pattern. 4. Stir the bottom of Crystals Glazes jars to loosen crystals. Apply a third coat of each color, making sure crystals are mixed in with the glaze and applied onto plate. 5. Paint the shadow of the tree with Dark Black using the No. 6 Round brush. Apply three coats, letting dry between each application. 6. Using the No. 6 Round brush, paint the tree with two coats of Ancient Woodland, letting dry between each application. Stir the bottom of the Ancient Woodland jar to loosen crystals and apply a third coat to tree, making sure crystals are mixed in with the glaze and applied to plate. 7. Using the No. 6 Round brush, paint three coats of Water Lily Marsh on the very bottom of plate and Alpine Meadow just above it in a wavy pattern to represent hills. Let dry between each coat, making sure to add crystals to the third coat. Let dry. 8. Stilt and fire to witness cone 06. Lightly wipe ware with a damp sponge to remove any dust. 2. Pour puddles of each Concepts Underglaze onto foil. 3. Using the No. 6 Round or the No. 6 Fan Glaze brush as needed, apply three coats of each color onto designated areas of vase, blending each color into the adjacent color and letting dry between each coat: Light Saffron: upper portion of vase, including inside and outside, leaving some area at top for the Crystals Glaze; Really Red: just below and blending up into the Light Saffron around the outside center of vase, as well as inside the vase and up the neck; Bright Briarwood: below the Really Red on the outside of the vase, leaving some area at very bottom for the Crystals Glaze. 4. Using No. 6 Round brush, apply three coats of Solar Flares to the inside and outside upper portion of the vase, blending the color and crystals into the Light Saffron and into the Really Red in some areas. Let dry between each coat. 5. Using the No. 6 Round brush, apply three coats of Ancient Woodland to the very bottom and up into the lower portion of the vase, blending into the Bright Briarwood. Let dry between each coat. 6. Use the No. 6 Fan Glaze brush to apply one coat of Pure Brilliance Clear Glaze to the Concepts Underglaze sections of vase left uncovered by Crystals Glazes. 7. Refer to photo for color and design placement. 1. Wipe ware with damp sponge to remove any dust. Let dry. 2. Line up the pattern and transfer on to ware using the clay carbon and pencil. 3. Pour Black glaze onto piece of foil. If needed add a drop or two of water and mix with Palette Knife. 4. Using the 1" Glaze Brush or the #6 Round apply three flowing coats of black to the entire background of the ware. Allow glaze to lose its sheen before applying each coat of Black. Let dry. 5. Pour Royal Danish and a small amount of Federal Blue onto piece of foil. Then place a very small amount of Royal Danish and equal amount of Federal Blue. Mix these two colors together using the Palette Knife. 6. Using the #6 or #4 Round Brush, proceed to pull in the individual flower petals. Work form the outer tip of petal inward and do not cover the centers of the flowers with any glaze. For the smaller underneath petals fully load the #6 or #4 Round with Royal Danish, side load one-side with a very small amount of the Federal Blue/Royal Danish mixture. Pull in the petals with two strokes, keeping the Federal Blue/Royal Danish mixture to the outer edges of both side of the petal. Complete all the underneath petals with one coat, then to back and repeat two more times to ensure good coat coverage. 7. Next block in the petals with two coats of Royal Danish, working from the outside in. Occasionally tip with Federal Blue/ Royal Danish mixture, pull out some shading from the inner area of the petal. Accenting should be pulled out at varying narrow lengths. Repeat for the third coat; keep the shading and accenting soft in appearance. For additional depth of color tip the #4 Round in Federal Blue and pull out soft shading line and add shadow to the underneath smaller petals along their outer edges and at the base of each petal. 8. Mix equal small amounts of Sun Yellow and Royal Ruby on foil with Palette Knife. Fully load the #4 Round with the mixture and apply three coats to small square like petals around the outer edge of centers. Let dry. 9. Fill in the large flower center with three coats of Sun Yellow, using the #4 Round. 10. Place a small amount of Cobalt Jet Black on foil and add 1-2 drops of water, mix with Palette Knife. Fully load the #1 Liner with the color and detail the entire design. Keeping the lines fine and broken. 11. Stilt and fire the piece to shelf cone Carefully remove stilt marks with Dremel Tool.
