1 Static Discharging GENERAL 3-60: STATIC DISCHARGING. General This section covers precipitation static wicks. Static wicks are installed on aircraft to discharge built up static electricity from the aircraft during flight. This helps reduce interference with radio systems. Micropoint static wicks are installed into static wick retainers. A. Wing Tip Precipitation Static Wicks The wing tip precipitation static wick retainers are installed to a bracket assembly. The bracket assembly is secured to a backing plate and gasket as part of the anti-collision strobe light assembly. For maintenance practices related to the forward position / anti-collision light, see Exterior Lighting section of Lights. (Refer to 33-40) B. Aileron Precipitation Static Wicks The aileron precipitation static wick retainers are attached directly to the wing between the wingtip and aileron. C. Elevator and Rudder Precipitation Static Wicks The elevator and rudder precipitation static wick retainers are attached directly to both elevators and the rudder. 7 Dec 07

2 . Maintenance Practices A. Wing Tip Precipitation Static Wicks (See Figure 3-60-) () Removal -Wing Tip Precipitation Static Wicks (c) Set BAT, BAT, and AVIONICS switches to OFF positions. Pull NAV LIGHTS, STROBE LIGHTS, and INST LIGHTS circuit breakers. Remove static wicks from retainers. () Installation - Wing Tip Precipitation Static Wicks Acquire necessary tools, equipment, and supplies. Description P/N or Spec. Supplier Purpose Ohmmeter - Any Source Check resistance. Sealant (Refer to -30) Any Source Seal static wicks to surface. Install static wicks onto both wing tips. Screw static wicks into retainers on both wing tips. NOTE No torque stripe, Loctite, or locking device required. Torque static wicks 0 to in-lb (.3 to.69 Nm). NOTE Leave an area of metal base of static wick exposed for future continuity checks. 3 Fill gaps between metal base of static wicks and wing tip surfaces with sealant. 3 (3) Operational Test - Precipitation Static Wicks Using ohmmeter, confirm resistance from metal base of each static wick to exhaust tail pipe is less than 0 ohms. Using megohmmeter, confirm resistance from metal base of each static wick to tip of static wick is 6 to 00 megohms. 3 7 Dec 07
