You will be thinking about possible claims for your symbolism work Session 9 connection Session 10 Today I want to teach you that literary essayists are often on the lookout for one especially powerful craft move that authors use in great effect symbols. Essayists look for craft moves that "pull their own weight" in particular, symbolism. Looking for symbols, and writing long about them, can help you write more powerful craft essays. I need to push myself: what does it mean? Also what "job" does this symbol have in the text? What is Bradbury trying to do by including this in the text? The sun compared to "good" things in life: "coins, crayons, like blushing, a warm iron..." Comparisons seem to be warm and positive something that takes care of you, or lets you get things done maybe it symbolizes nourishment the kids didn't have the nourishment until this one day that the sun revealed itself. Could it be that the sun is like: vitality? hope? freedom? What is he trying to show you, the reader? Look for patterns of craft across the text in similar scenes. Focus on powerful craft moves, like symbolism. Write a claim for author s craft, either focusing on one or many craft moves. Look for patterns of craft across the text in similar scenes. Focus on powerful craft moves, like symbolism. Write a claim for author s craft, either focusing on one or many craft moves. Plan how your essay will go and begin drafting. Write introductions that summarize the story, explain the essay s relevance, state the claim, and write strong conclusions How to Write Craft Essay Looking for patterns across your entries to start to develop claims: You may want to pause frequently while you are collecting your entries to see if patterns are developing. Similar craft moves? Metaphors that match up in certain ways? Can you begin to develop claims about the craft moves you are seeing? Divergent Veronica Roth Simile notes: "a pale ring of sunlight burns into the clouds like the end of a lit cigarette (46) "his smile was cut into his face like a knife" (54) Both similes are they kind of violent? Is it important to note that Roth is developing a pattern of violence? Possible claim: In Divergent, Veronica Roth uses inner thinking, descriptive language, and comparisons to make Tris's perspective clear. 5
