1 INDEPENDENT BAPTIST ACADEMY FIRST GRADE THROUGH SIXTH GRADE SUMMER NEWSLETTER JUNE - AUGUST We would like to extend a hearty welcome to each one of our academy families. We trust that you are having an enjoyable summer, and we are looking forward to being of service to you this fall. If you have any questions concerning the academy, please do not hesitate to contact the school office. Our summer hours are 8:00 A.M. 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. PARENT/TEACHER ORIENTATION Our orientation meeting will be Monday, August 29, 2016, beginning at 7:00 P.M. in church auditorium. Parents and students are encouraged to be a part of this meeting. SCHOOL CALENDAR Enclosed is a school calendar that lists the general events throughout the entire school year as well as the days school will not be in session. Please keep this calendar in an obvious location where you can refer to it frequently. Many of our parents put their school calendar on their refrigerator. SCHOOL OPENS Opening day of school is Wednesday, August 31, The school day for all students starts at 8:15 A.M. and ends at 3:10 P.M. There will be no school on Monday, September 5, in observance of Labor Day. EARLY/LATE STAY Early Stay operates from 7:00 A.M. 8:00 A.M. each morning, and Late Stay operates from 3:30 P.M. 6:00 P.M. each afternoon. The cost for this service is itemized below: TYPE OF SERVICE ESTIMATED MONTHLY RATE DAILY RATE Early Stay $ $5.50 Late Stay $ $6.50 These services are available dependent upon enough students needing them. Any child picked up after 6:00 P.M. will be charged an additional $10.00 for the first five minutes and $1.00 for every minute thereafter. LUNCH Students may bring their lunch from home or purchase lunch from our school cafeteria. Cold storage of food item/drinks is not provided for students who bring their lunch nor is the school microwave available to students. BOOK BAG NEEDED EVERY DAY If your child does not bring his/her book bag to school, he may lose his papers or important notices from the teacher or the office. Please be sure he brings it every day of the year. This is vital in building responsibility. ABSENTEEISM If your child is absent or going to be late for any reason, please call the school ahead of time. If your child becomes ill after arriving at school, the office will contact you to come get your child as soon as possible. When your child returns to school after any absence, a note must accompany him/her before he/she will be admitted to class. Excessive absences may result in a child not being promoted. 2 TARDINESS It is very important that every student be on time for school each day because being on time teaches a child to be responsible. Parents should plan for their child to arrive well in advance of 8:15 A.M. to ensure they are not tardy. When a young person is late, it disrupts the class, embarrasses the child, and causes him to get behind in his morning work. We understand that there will be times when an emergency warrants being tardy. However, these occasions should be rare and exceptional. Please make note that when a first through fourth grade student has three unexcused tardies, these tardies will be equal to one absence. When a fifth through sixth student has three unexcused tardies, he will receive a tally. BEING TARDY IS FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY. All late arrivals to school will be considered tardies. Students in the elementary who are late must go by the office to get a tardy slip. DRESS CODE Students in K4 through fifth grades are required to wear uniforms purchased through Carousel Uniform Company ( ). Sixth grade students need to see both shirt order forms. GIRLS DRESS The hem of dresses or skirts when kneeling should touch the floor. (See handbook for further information). BOYS HAIR Haircuts should be tapered to the natural hairline on the sides and back and combed neatly across or up off the forehead. The hair in front must not touch the eyebrows, and the hair in the back may not be too long and full so that it touches the shirt collar. Hair on the sides may not be over or touch the ears. Sideburns must not extend lower than the middle of the ear. In general, hair must not be allowed to get too full, whereby, when it is washed and dried, it appears shaggy. Thick, curly hair must not be longer than a half inch high. Rat-tails, tracking, bowl cuts, spiked hair, Mohawks, braids, twists, or cornrows, etc., are not acceptable hair standards. (Flat tops are not considered spiked). Afros may not exceed one-half inch thickness at any time. STUDENT SUPPLY LIST The following is a general list of supplies that each grade will need at the beginning of school. Some of these supplies listed may be purchased through IBA. In order to be consistent in a class, certain items must be purchased through IBA only. These items are marked IBA ONLY on the supply list. IBA only items may be purchased in the lobby immediately following the Parent-Teacher Orientation or thereafter. FIRST GRADE SUPPLY LIST 1 KJV Bible 24 Sharpened #2 pencils (4 in a box at all times) 2 Large erasers (no toy erasers of any kind) 1 Soft pencil pouch 1 Pair of scissors (pointed) 2 Boxes of 24 regular crayons (must have primary colors) 1 Large glue stick 1 12 count box of colored pencils 4 PLASTIC pocket folders (one must be red) (picture/designs should be in agreement with academy philosophies and teachings) 1 Lunch box (OPTIONAL) pictures and designs must be in agreement with academy philosophies and teachings 1 Large container of Clorox wipes to be stored and used as needed 1 12 oz. bottle hand sanitizer to be stored and used as needed 4 IBA first grade writing tablets (PURCHASED AT IBA ONLY) 1 Homework tablet (PURCHASED AT IBA ONLY)

3 SECOND GRADE SUPPLY LIST 1 Three-ring binder that is one inch thick. (BASIC IS BEST. NO PAPER IS NEEDED.) 1 Package of pencils standard, #2, sharpened TICONDEROGA IS PREFERRED NO MECHANICAL PENCILS 1 Large eraser (No toy erasers of any kind) 1 Box of crayons or colored pencils (must have primary colors) MARKERS NOT ALLOWED! 2 Large plastic pencil pouches 7 PLASTIC pocket folders (blank) 1 Large glue stick Fiskar scissors are preferred 2 Large containers of Clorox or Lysol wipes to be stored and used as needed 2 Bottles of Lysol Disinfectant Spray to be stored and used as needed 3 IBA second grade writing tablets (PURCHASED AT IBA ONLY) 1 Homework tablet (PURCHASED AT IBA ONLY) Lunch box (OPTIONAL) pictures and designs must be in agreement with academy philosophies and teachings Please make sure all items are labeled with your child s name. Also please make sure that pictures and designs are appropriate (when in doubt, ask). NO PERSONAL PENCIL SHARPENERS ALLOWED.
