1 Academic/Career & Technical Related/Demonstration Lesson Plan Instructor Erin Kisela Date Blizzard Bag #1 Program/Class Integrated Periods 5A, 6, 8 State Indicator/Competency: RL Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain. RL Analyze literary text development. a. Determine a theme of text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details. RI Determine the meanings of words and phrases as they are used meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone. Instructional Objective(s): 1.Students will be able to identify two metaphors in the short story All in a Summer s Day with 100% accuracy. 2. Students will be able to identify four similes in the short story All in a Summer s Day with 100% accuracy. 3. Students will be able to provide two reasons why the children in the story hated Margot and explain how the children reflected that society s values with 80% accuracy Students will be able to explain why this short story is considered an example of science fiction writing with 100% accuracy. Materials: Smartboard, notes on terms, copies of the story from the Characters in Conflict textbooks, worksheet for terms/questions Method of Instruction: Independent Activities: Throughout our Science Fiction unit we have looked at the overall plotline and the irony that authors used to get their points/views across to the reader. In yesterday s story Bradbury played with the ironic contrasts between the outside world in the story and the ordinary day world inside the house. Along with using irony in stories Bradbury also using figurative language. Students should recall past definitions for figurative language including metaphors and similes.
2 Students should read the short story All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury and identify how the author is using metaphors and similes. o What is meant by the lines I think the sun is a flower.? o Why does the author describe Margot as an old photograph dusted from an album? o Analyze how the group seems to act as one during this scene and why they isolate Margot. o Identify scientific characteristics shown in this story. How does it fit in with previous science fiction stories? Recall past notes/lectures and compare this story to them. Closure: Read all of the story and answer all questions on the worksheet. Assessment: Collect the Blizzard Bag #1 worksheet (10 points)
