2 SETTING The setting is the time and place of a story. Setting can sometimes just be a backdrop to the story and others time it is an elemental part of the plot. The setting can help shape the story and without it, the story would not be the same. For example, if we were reading about naval ships docked in a harbor, it would make a difference to know that the time and place of the story was December 7, 1941, at Pearl Harbor. What is the setting of the story? Time: Place: How is this important to the theme of the story? WRITING What a journal entry on the benefits and negatives of technology? How do they help and hinder society? Journal entries need to be at least five sentences long. Work on sentence structure, how you start your sentences, grammar and punctuation. Give specific details/examples. pg. 2

3 THOUGHTS WHILE READING While reading the story, think about these questions: 1. What use is all our cleverness, without the wisdom to accept our vulnerable position in the universe? 2. This story was written in 1951 during the Cold War, there are many technological advancements mentioned in this story.
