Pre-AP: Turn in your book projects! Pre-AP: Gallery Walk / presentations of book projects ELA: Read last section (11) ( ) Answer the remaining 3 questions from your reading log (with vocab), finish character chart ALL CLASSES: Character chart due Thursday May 12 th TEST Monday May 16 th
FIND YOUR NUMBER AND RESPOND (Tuesday) #1 Happiness We have everything we need to be happy, but we aren t happy. Something s missing. How might Bradbury be defining happiness in Fahrenheit 451? Does he present a new idea of happiness or preserve an older idea? #2 Knowledge [Books] stitched the patches of the universe together into one garment for us. How do books draw together ideas and information so as to capture details that might otherwise be missed? #3 Freedom of Thought The televisor tells you what to think and blasts it in. Members of this world have plenty off-hours but do they have time to think? What kind of thinking do Faber and Bradbury prefer? Will it initially make life more difficult? #4 Education Remember, the firemen are rarely necessary. The public itself stopped reading of its own accord. What kind of education is necessary to create citizens who recognize quality of information, take leisure to digest it, and carry out actions based on what we learn from the interaction of the first two? How might this relate to our current educational system?
Tuesday May 10 th Fun Fact: Fahrenheit 451 is set in October 2052 It was published in 1951 and set 101 years in the future. Review Game rules: Each table has a white board to write answers. Discuss possible answers quietly at your table before writing anything. Once you show you answer, you cannot change it. Don t cheat. This will help you know what to study for the test (which is on Monday). Everyone will finish writing (1-2 minutes per question) before answers are revealed.
Wednesday May 11th ELA: Identify / explain figurative language throughout the book Figurative Language Practice: Work with a partner at your table find (2-3 of each of these) similes/metaphors/personification/ repetition examples from these pages of Fahrenheit 451 and explain the figurative language: Table 1 seats 1-2 (1-15) Table 1 seats 3-4 (16-27) Table 2 seats 1-2 (28-38) Table 2 seats 3-4 (39-49) Table 3 seats 1-2 (50-60) Table 3 seats 3-4 (61-71) Table 4 seats 1-2 (72-82) Table 4 seats 3-4 (83-94) Table 5 seats 1-2 (95-105) Table 5 seats 3-4 ( ) Table 6 seats 1-2 ( ) Table 6 seats 3-4 ( ) Table 7 seats 1-2 ( ) Table 7 seats 3-4 ( ) QUOTE, Type of figurative language, explanation
Body Biographies: Wednesday May 11th PAP: Working with your shoulder partner, you will be analyzing 1 character from Fahrenheit 451. You are finding quotes which show that character s thoughts, emotions, feelings, actions, beliefs, and symbols. Be sure to give page numbers. On the back of the paper explain why Ray Bradbury included this character in the novel. What was his/her purpose and impact on the story / other characters? Why is this character important? These are due at the end of class.
Create 2 questions (synthesis/evaluation level 2 or level 3). QW - Mr. Granger talks about the loss of his grandfather and the impact he made on him. Why did he make such an impact? Does someone play a role like this in your life? Explain. How will you have this impact on someone? Pick up an index card from the outbox. Have your character chart ready for me to check.
TEST MONDAY! SOCRATIC Outside circle answer these on an index card: 1.Which of the following did the inside circle discuss? A. Characters B. Symbols C. Situations 2. What did you learn? 3. List any inaccurate information that was discussed.
1. What do you think caused Mildred to bring about the destruction of her own house by reporting that her husband had hidden books? 2. Why does Beatty want Montag to wield the flame thrower to destroy his own house and why does Montag acquiesce? 3. Almost without knowing it, Montag s hands switch off the safety on the flame thrower aimed at Beatty. What does this show about Montag s state of awareness or consciousness? 4. Why do you think Beatty mockingly tells Montag to pull the trigger (p. 113) on the flame thrower Montag has aimed at him? 5. Is Montag justified in killing Beatty? Why or why not? 6. Why do the teenagers in the car try to kill Montag as he crosses the avenue? How do their actions reflect what is happening in society? 7. What is fitting about Montag s planting books in Fireman Black s home? 8. What insight about himself does Montag gain as he reflects on his violent actions? 9. Even though war has been declared, the news media focuses on the Mechanical Hound s tracking of Montag. What does this say about the function of the media in society? 10. If Montag were caught and dying, what single word or phrase do you think he could say to the TV cameras that would wake the people up to the enforced triviality of their lives? 11. What insight about time and the sun and his actions as a fireman does Montag get during his leisurely float on the river? What does Montag understand humans must do to counter the effects of the time-burning sun? 12. How is the campfire different from the burning fire with which Montag is familiar? 13. What is so remarkable to Montag about the voices around the campfire he hears as he hides in the trees? 14. How is Montag like the men he encounters gathered around the campfire? 15. How do the old men hope to use the books they have memorized, and what do they think will happen? 16. What makes the war and its end so unreal to Montag and his companions? 17. What do Montag s imaginings about Mildred s fate when the bombs fall indicate about him? 18. What, according to Granger, makes humans different from the Phoenix? How will this help humankind finally? 19. Why do you think that the old men fall in behind Montag on their journey back to the city. Why has he become the leader? 20. What is the significance of the quote that Montag will save for noon when they reach the city? 21. Would Montag have changed if he hadn t met Clarisse?
