Welcome to Fashion at Northumbria University Between now and the week commencing the 18th September 2017, we would like you to prepare some detailed visual research material. This can be in a loose sheet format or in a sketchbook - A3 size. It should consist of observational drawing as detailed in the brief below. Only draw on one side of each page as the sheets may later be used in a new sketchbook. This work will contribute towards your first module and is relevant for the meet and greet session we ll hold near the beginning of the semester. SUMMER RESEARCH BRIEF Understanding garments and construction is crucial to understanding fashion design. Look at your own wardrobe and select 6 key pieces, loved pieces, iconic pieces, vintage pieces, (garments and accessories) to study and draw. For example, outerwear, shirts, jeans, tailoring, dresses, trousers, shoes, boots, bags, belts, hats, sportswear You can also source items from second hand shops (or even your parents wardrobe?). As you draw and illustrate, use this checklist to make sure you have covered everything for each piece: over-all silhouette/ shape front, back & side views seam lines & top stitching details like pockets, collars, waistbands, belt loops, cuffs, fastenings edge finishes like hems, bindings or facings internal as well as external details the quality, weight, handle of the fabric some expression of colour and texture (may be separate from the main observational drawings so you don t obscure the detail) Quality, and observational accuracy is more important than quantity when you look at your drawings and imagery they should inform and inspire you to design other garments, so draw what fascinates YOU. Explore and investigate. Remember to utilise varying media and various styles of illustration realistic, diagrammatic, observational, and expressive. The focus, however, is on garments (and accessories), not on fashion figures or faces! SUMMARY OF WORK REQUIRED Detailed observational drawings answering the brief above, of at least 6 different garments. Drawings on single sided paper, A3: loose or bound.
BA (Hons) Fashion In providing this list, please note that we are not expecting you to turn up on the first day with everything. It is only a guide. Start with the basics and then build a collection. You will have the opportunity to try some of the media that will be new to you before you consider buying. The equipment you will need to bring with you to start is listed below: A Academic diary approx (or you can use a digital calendar on smartphone or laptop it is up to you). Good quality pencils (a range between HB and 6B for drawing, with a 2H for pattern making). Sets range from If you prefer, a good quality mechanical pencil can be used. (size 0.5 with 2H-HB leads for pattern cutting, and 0.7 with 2B leads for drawing). 2 A3 sketchbooks approx. 10 (you need one for each module may need another for semester 2). Please choose one with good quality paper. 2 A3 layout paper pads approx Buy the non-bleedproof version if possible. Erasers putty eraser for drawing approx. 1; plastic eraser for pattern cutting - approx. 50p Good quality black fine liner pens e.g. 5 pack Uni Pin approx. 6 Writing materials e.g. pens, pads, file paper, hard back file etc. The most popular books on your reading list are listed below and an be purchased second hand from Pattern Designs - a fresh approach to pattern cutting (1980) by Hilary Campbell. Published by Stanley Thornes (Publishers) Ltd. Approx. 25+ new and used. Fashion Drawing: Illustration Techniques for Designers (2016) by Michele Wesen Bryant. Published by Laurence King. Approx. 20+ new and used.
Fig 1: What fashion illustrators use for pencil drawing ( McLafferty, 2016) The equipment you will probably need to buy early in semester 1 is listed below: Please note that the pattern master and the sewing kits are a compulsory purchase from university as they have been bulk ordered to achieve a significant student discount for you. Gouache (for painting colour chips). Buy the tubes, not the gouache blocks - e.g. Winsor and Newton set Please ensure the starter set includes white, primary red, primary blue and primary yellow. There is no need to buy a large collection of paint at this point. As you will use a lot of white it is more economical to buy a small pot of Wilko s matt white emulsion, and it also gets the colour chips flat. Paintbrushes fake sable hair chisel shaped to start - prices vary due to quality e.g.pro Arte brush set approx Artists coloured pencils (e.g. Caran D Ache) approx. Pack , pack of Pritt stick approx Masking Tape- approx. 2.00; Sellotape & double sided Sellotape approx Blutak (or Whitetak) for positioning artwork approx Portable hard drive (for backing up digital work). Prices range from 10
Memory sticks to submit work digitally approx. 5 Large pair of shears for cutting fabric range from Large pair of shears for cutting paper patterns range from Scissors (for paper/sketchbook work) approx Small pair of sewing scissors - approx Quick unpick (can be found in haberdashery departments) Approx Tape measure (metric) approx Good quality dressmakers pins approx White tailors chalk. A pattern master - from university, at the discounted rate of approx (if you don t already have one). Sewing Kit from university - includes 4 special sewing machine feet, a screwdriver, a spool case and 2 spools less than 30. If purchased, the University will invoice students for this amount. Hairbands or clips (if you have long hair you will not be allowed to use industrial machines without tying it back for H & S reasons) A couple of lightweight, A3 presentation files with built in plastic sleeves (WH Smith sell these fairly cheaply). These are important in order to keep your work clean and to enable you to present your work professionally for assessment. You will need 1 for Semester 1 and one for Semester 2. (Morplan.com is a good online shop for sewing and pattern cutting equiptment such as pins, masking tape, tailors chalk etc.) Other items you may find useful to add to your art box as you progress through the programme: Mechanical pencil leads or disposables e.g. Papermate disposables box x Scalpel, blades, steel rule and small cutting mat e.g. Swann Morton handle approx. 4.00; blades pk; steel rule approx. 2.00; A4 cutting mat approx A3 tracing paper pad approx A3 cartridge paper pad approx Graph paper pad for drawing flats approx Watercolours (tubes or blocks) e.g. Cotman pan set. Tube set 12 approx Any other drawing materials e.g. marker pens such as magic markers, promarkers, Pantone markers, or Spectrum Noir; chalk/oil pastels, Chinagraph pencils, Brusho inks, indian ink, Brush pens (approx each), bamboo ink pens, promarkers etc. Marker sets purchased from Pantone, Spectrum Noir, etc. available singly from around 3 each, to packs (eg skintone, greys, etc. in packs of 6 price being negotiated) Pattern notcher - this can be purchased from MacCulloch & Wallis. Item no Item cost approx A quarter scale pattern master available from at Tracing wheel, available from university Textiles equipment (for use in semester 2)
o Range of sizes of knitting needles and crocheted hooks (look at second hand shops) o Embroidery needles in various sizes o Embroidery hoop (optional) o 100% Polyester fabric in a range of weights; sateen, crepe for example: 1 metre of each. o Scrap pieces of card over various weights and textures o Tools for mark making on fabric e.g. glue spreaders, sticks sponges etc. A3 (or A4) lightbox. Available from Ebay. Approx. 20+ We also recommend that you invest, as soon as you can afford it, in an A3 Presentation Portfolio (e.g. Artcare, etc.) and plastic sleeves. This is important, not only to keep work clean, but also to provide a more professional presentation of work when attending Industrial Placement interviews. Ideally you should possess a presentation portfolio by the end of the first year for end of year assessment. Students who have their own laptop or Macbook may also consider purchasing a Bamboo Wacom tablet and pen. Again this is purely optional but is a helpful tool when drawing digitally approx. 40 Domestic sewing machine. Although there is access to industrial machines for classes, they can be busy, and a domestic sewing machine will prove useful for sampling and toiles when working at home. They can be bought cheaply from local Ad Trader newspapers, Ebay, Gumtree etc. If you are buying a new one expect to pay from around 100 from a store such as Lidl. A good quality camera if you are interested in photography. The university has equipment you can use for projects. A Macbook while you have access to the desktop Macs, most students prefer to use their own. You will also probably want to use Adobe software Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, once you start to learn the skills. Please note: While the university provides core fabrics for design and make project work, students are expected to provide any extra contrasting fabrics they may like to use, trims etc., as well as calico and other fabrics for toiles. The above prices are to give an estimation of costs - you may find cheaper art materials if you shop around. Below is a list of online art suppliers that may be useful Study Trips You will be required to undertake one or more museum/gallery visits during induction. Please budget for 15 for this.
You will also have the opportunity to attend a city trip, which feeds into some of your semester two modules. This year we hope to be visiting London and/or a European city, or a New York visit. Approximate costs for the trip to be confirmed Example: 400 Paris trip In addition to this you may want to visit exhibitions and museums as part of your research activity and we advise you to allow approx. 50 for entry fees per semester for these. Please note: that the above trips are to be confirmed, costs are approximate and may vary.
BA (Hons) Fashion Year 1 Should I buy a Computer? Throughout the course you will be acquiring skills that enable you to create and present work professionally using a computer. It is not essential to buy a computer as the School of Design has Apple Mac computers with all relevant programs on. However if you do wish to buy your own computer, to enable you to continue your studies at home, it is advisable to read the following advice. A good spec. laptop PC or MAC computer would be a sound investment. Many aspects of your study on Fashion incorporate digital elements and although we have adequate computer provision here at the university, a laptop of your own can be a great asset. However we emphasise this is purely optional! Please note, as you will not be using computers extensively until the 2 nd semester of year 1, there is no need to rush to purchase a computer in time for starting your studies. Apple Mac vs PC Apple Macs tend to be the best platform for design and creativity due to the strength of the applications available and the fact that Macs are generally high quality computers. However they are more expensive and a good quality PC will be sufficient to run programs needed for your studies. A Mac is more secure due to the fact that there are few viruses that can infect them, however, PCs do need virus protection. Computer Packages used during your Studies. Students use 3 or so main programs throughout their studies, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Word. The cheapest way to buy Illustrator and Photoshop is to buy in a package (excluding word) called Adobe Creative Suite 6 (CS6) Design Standard. Digital software Adobe Creative Suite 6 Student teacher edition We do have a large number of computers within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Department (Design School) for you to access and work with this software. As your study progresses you may eventually want to purchase your own copy. Once you have enrolled as a student you will be able to purchase CS6 at a discounted price. However, again we emphasise this is purely optional. You will need to check that your PC or Mac can enable the relevant software to be installed. Visit the following link which may help you to check the requirements:
In addition it would also be helpful to buy a Bamboo Wacom tablet and pen, again this is purely optional but it is a helpful tool when working digitally. Approx oo+pen
