THE PIMA COUNTY FAIR AND ITS AGENTS ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSS, THEFT OR DAMAGE TO ANY EXHIBIT DURING THE PERIODS OF RECEIVING, JUDGING, EXHIBITION, OR RETURN. EVERY PRECAUTION WILL BE TAKEN TO GUARD AGAINST SUCH LOSS OR DAMAGE. 10. The exhibitor is solely responsible for deciding on the proper class and lot number for each entry. We will do our best to reclassify improperly classified entries. 11. When you fill out the form be sure to list important information about your entry that the judge may need to know under name of entry. Certified Southern Arizona School Teachers may enter their student s projects in the Student Section of the Home Arts Division for $1.00 per entry. Students 5-17 years old. JUDGING 1. In competition, the details are all important. All judges are chosen for their high qualifications in their particular field. They are asked not to judge on individual likes or dislikes, but have standard rules and regulations to judge by. If your entries do not receive an award, it does not mean they are not edible, or in the case of hand work, that they are improperly made. 2. Judges are instructed not to award ribbons unless exhibits are deemed worthy of merit. 3. ALL FOODS, with exception of canned meats, vegetables and soups, will be tasted during judging. 4. Items are judged before the final display. Items may be moved after judging to other areas for security or safety reasons.
2 HOW YOU CAN BE A WINNER Cakes: Appearance, texture, crumb and taste. Pies: Appearance, flavor, texture of crust and filling. CANNED FOODS Jams: Crushed fruit, not strained or sieved, cooked with sugar until the mixture is thick. Natural fruit flavors must be preserved. Jellies: A translucent semi-solid mass which holds its shape and at the same time quivers when slightly shaken. Preserves the true fruit flavor. Conserves: A mixture of several fruits, cooked to jam-like consistency. Addition of nuts and/or raisins are optional. Preserves: Whole small fruits or pieces of larger fruits cooked in syrup until clear and thick. The fruit is firm and retains its shape. Marmalade: A clear, jelly like preserve with fruit suspended in small, thin pieces. Clear, thick syrup. Pickles and Relish: All cucumber and mixed pickles must be firm and crisp. Sweet pickles should be firm, yet tender. Natural color of product, clearness of liquid, uniformity of pack, and clear (not cloudy) liquid covering contents are all-important. Flavor is essential in this class. DO NOT OVERCOOK. Fruit: Ripeness determines the color, taste and texture of canned fruits. Uniformity of pack, and clear (not cloudy) liquid covers the contents. Vegetables: Here again, the product must be fresh and true to color to determine the taste. Clear (not cloudy) liquid covers the contents. Miscellaneous Foods: Appearance, texture, and flavor. Perishable Foods: Appearance, texture, flavor, and blending of herbs & spices. Quick Breads: Shape, volume, texture, grain, and flavor. Yeast Breads: Outside shape: Loaf well proportioned, no bulges, bumps or cracks (except where characteristic). Inside texture: Tender, elastic, crumb moist, not doughy. Crust: Golden brown, smooth and tender. Volume: Light, but not airy in proportion to taste. Grain: Fine, thin-walled cells, no air bubbles. Color: Light cream with no light streaks.
