Overview Why Universal Design? How to UD? What is UD?
Chapter 15 in textbook Working with research par6cipants with impairments: Par6cipa6ng and challenges Proxy users Different levels of ability
Why UD? - Democracy, include all - BeQer for all - While driving an automobile and using the telephone?

Universal Design Universal Design universal late 14c., from O.Fr. universel (12c.), from L. universalis "of or belonging to all," from universus "all together, whole, en6re" (see universe). In mechanics, a universal joint (1670s) is one which allows free movement in any direc6on; in theology universalism (1805) is the doctrine of universal salva6on (universalist in this sense is aqested from 1620s). Universal product code is recorded from 1974.
Universal Design and.. Inclusive design Barrier free design Design for all Access for all Design for diversity Par6cipatory Design User centerd Design Human centered Design
Principles of UD The Center for Universal Design at North Carolina State University expounds the following principles: 1. Equitable use 2. Flexibility in use 3. Simple and intui6ve 4. Percep6ble informa6on 5. Tolerance for error 6. Low physical effort 7. Size and space for approach and use
5 minutes. In Your project; what changes would happen if you include deaf, visual impaired and motor impaired uses? List 5 challenges and 5 opportuni6es

Legisla6on An$diskrimineringsloven: 11 Obliga$on for the universal design of informa$on and communica$on technology (ICT) Informa6on and communica6on technology (ICT) refers to technology and systems that are used to express, create, convert, exchange, store, reproduce and publish informa6on, or otherwise makes informa6on useful. New ICT solu6ons that support the organiza6on's normal func6ons and the main solu6ons directed at or made available to the public, should be universally designed from July 1st 2011, but no earlier than twelve months aser the existence of standards or guidelines for the content of the obliga6on. For exis6ng IT solu6ons, the duty from January 1st The duty does not include ICT solu6ons in which the design is regulated by other laws (...) (Lovdata.no, 2008).
Standards W3C: The social value of the Web is that it enables human communica6on, commerce, and opportuni6es share knowledge. One of W3C's primary goals is to make these benefits available to all people, whatever their hardware, sosware, network infrastructure, na6ve language, culture, geographical loca6on, or physical or mental ability: hqp:// [downloaded ]). General applica6ons na6ve How to measure against standards?
5 minutes Think about criteria for ensuring universally designed services. Make a list of 5 criteria.
Idea - Prac6ce At UiO for example? Why is it challenging? Developing services Poli6cal campains on the net for all?
Inspira6on Next to a leisurely walk I enjoy a spin on my tandem bicycle. It is splendid to feel the wind blowing in my face and the springy mo6on of my iron steed. The rapid rush through the air gives me a delicious sense of strength and buoyancy, and the exercise makes my pulse dance and my heart sing. - Helen Keller
