Susan Golton CV Name: Susan Golton ( Married name: Susan Cook) Mobile: susan.golton@network.rca.ac.uk Website: Qualifications Double Masters MA and MSc in Innovation Design Engineering at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College 2:2 BEng in Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College A Grade A-levels in Physics, Maths and Art Personal Statement I studied Mechanical Engineering for three years and enjoyed tackling the many aspects of the discipline. I leapt at the opportunity to apply this knowledge to design challenges at the RCA. An engineering approach has allowed me to find more detailed and functional solutions to design challenges. Studying Innovation Design Engineering was intensive and valuable, learning new skills in idea generation, iterative prototyping, manufacturing and presentation. My design skillset is complemented by my illustration skills, which are a valuable storytelling tool. I have completed projects in toy design, medical design, storyboarding, artwork, consumer electronics, furniture and graphics both within the RCA, for competitions and for external companies. I aim to embrace and learn from as many creative disciplines as I am able to in order to enrich my work. The departure point for my degree project was an exploration of the human need to fidget with physical objects. The insights of this project lead me to design an electronic toy to maximise the thinking ability of the owner. This project is ongoing. I have many creative hobbies, including drawing comics, traditional crafts, doll making and web design. I take commissions for comic style artwork and run drawing workshops for schools and at comic and anime conventions, where I also promote my own work. Online portfolio: Online Comics Archive: Experience May Present : Internship with Haberdasherylondon ltd. March Present : Freelance Storyboarding for Native Design LTD December Present : Sales and Product Development Manager at Unto this Last, London. Also website work undertaken. November 2010 : Month-long internship as Chief Product Data Manager at furniture manufacturer Unto This Last. September February 2011 : Freelance product development work with the BBC. April 2010 : Bursary obtained from Dyson for Project Fidget : Innovation Design Engineering at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College. Summer 2009 : Six-week toy design internship with Laughing Onions Ltd. Summer 2008 : Storyboarding for Laughing Onions LTD for a product pitch to leading toy companies. June 2008 : Competition win with pdd Design Consultancy for a toy concept design : Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College Skills Brainstorming, iteration, prototyping and presentation of ideas SolidWorks CAD software for CAM and rapid prototyping Prototyping and workshop skills as well as resin work. Web design skills with portfolio of web based work. Extensive use of Adobe Creative Suite. Experience with sketching, storyboarding and illustration through traditional and digital mediums. 2 Project Fidget Fidgeting is often seen as a negative thing to do. In fact, it helps focus the brain and aids learning and concentration, particularly for people with ADHD. What if fidgeting was something more acceptable in learning and social environments? During Project Fidget I took input from teachers and ADHD experts to provide three concepts for engaging, acceptable fidgeting which do not require the use of the eyes or ears to use. They also do not offer a distraction to other people. Bubble Beats explores the use of rhythm to augment fidgets with a tapping gesture concealed in a watch. PetPet takes inspiration from textures and an animal-like feedback to petting and uses a microcontroller to respond to touch. Fidget Make explores counting fidgets and making them physical by knitting a stitch for every fidget. Final year Solo Degree project, 2010, being carried forwards as a personal project. See attached PetPet movie for a demonstration of the functional prototype.

Canary D-Pad 2010 Group Project with Elena Figus The Canary D-Pad is a sanitary pad which can indicate if the user may be at risk of Type 2 Diabetes. This was developed in response to the observation that Diabetes is one of the fastest growing health problems in both developed and developing countries. The signs may not be recognized until the condition has already progressed to an irreversible stage. The D-Pad was developed using the concept of everyday items which can work as smart health indicators, which we named Canary products. These products are able to read information given out by the body that is normally hidden. They are easy and painless to use, with little change to daily routine.
Ghana Tyre Laptop Case 2009 Collaboration with Mawuli Dogbatse at Kumasi University, Ghana. The Go Global project brief was to develop a premium product made in Ghana with a Ghanaian aesthetic for world wide markets. We worked using old, worn out bicycle tyres because the layers of colour showing through were visually interesting, as well as providing a touch shell for a laptop case. This material was cleaned and reused using processes found in the Kumasi marketplace. Traditional Batik printing was used for the lining, in a tyre inspired design. This collaboration and cultural exchange was very valuable and has informed my approach as a designer.
Virgin Galactic Space Toilet This IDE project was a brief from Virgin Galactic to prototype a conceptual Space Hotel. We were given one of the more challenging rooms, the bathroom. The technical problems involved with using a toilet in space means that currently astronauts have to be strapped in to an unfriendly device involving tubes and suction to use the toilet. We put forward the idea that an ergonomic design that would allow the user to hold themselves in place with their legs and feet might be a more natural and friendly experience. We made a foam rig designed to be shaped as a unisex toilet and tested it by holding it in place while in a variety of positions. The completed bathroom design included a sink and shower which have moisture secreting technology to allow for zero gravity washing, and wall coverings with handles for maneuverability.
Chairs As part of my Innovation Design Engineering Masters I designed and made a prototype chair, intended to evoke the feel of Japanese comic line work and screen tone. I was able to use metalworking skills, attempt upholstery and explore furniture design as part of this. A retailer of products for 1/3 scale ball jointed dolls saw my chair and suggested to me that designing for the doll collector market might be a valuable opportunity. I prototyped this small scale chair as an exploration into the market for small scale doll furniture. My latest chair, the And Chair was a competition entry for Area Declick s A chair for Many competition. The brief specified the use of metal for the design and to meet the criteria of a chair for many different people. I incorporated a foot rest into the bold graphical design as well as a storage area under the seat.
