1 TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION prototype modelling WorldSkills International TD45 v4.0 WSC2013

2 WorldSkills International, by a resolution of the Technical Committee and in accordance with the Constitution, the Standing Orders and the Competition Rules, has adopted the following minimum requirements for this skill for the WorldSkills Competition. The Technical Description consists of the following: 1. 3 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Name and description of skill The name of the skill is Prototype Modelling Description of skill When a product goes into production a prototype model is created according to design criteria and specifications. The final design is determined through testing and modifications with the created prototype model. Prototype modelling showcases the skills needed to materialise design ideas and it is an essential sector of industry for developing attractive products. 1.2 Scope of application Every Expert and Competitor must know this Technical Description In the event of any conflict within the different languages of the Technical Descriptions, the English version takes precedence. 1.3 Associated documents As this Technical Description contains only skill-specific information it must be used in association with the following: WSI - Competition Rules WSI - Online resources as indicated in this document Host Country - Health and Safety regulations 2. COMPETENCY AND SCOPE OF WORK The Competition is a demonstration and assessment of the competencies associated with this skill. The Test Project consists of practical work only. 2.1 Competency specification The Competitor shall be able to work with: 3D CAD systems Preparing 2D drawings Creating prototype models using hand tools and machines Transferring and creating copies of parts Finishing prototype model surfaces Painting prototype model with spray cans Decorating prototype model with given sticker given standard plastic materials: PU-Chemical wood, casting resin, celcoat, laminating resin, acryl glass, PVC ect. only cutting, sanding, gluing and painting (no forming under heat and polishing) using the own measurement equipment Prototype Modelling 2 of 9

4 The Competitor shall have the knowledge and understanding of: Creating prototype models based on the design based the specified materials, hand tools and machines Negative and positive moulding Modifying minor product details Design The provided 3D-CAD software (for example: Inventor, SolidWorks, ProE etc.) ISO standards for drawings Creating parts, assembling and drawings with the provided 3D-CAD software incl. dimensioning Characteristics, risks and processing methods of: casting resin, laminating resin, chemical wood materials Risk and use of spray cans Characteristics, risks and processing methods of modelling materials Use and safety of small electric tools (only with dust extractor), disc sanding machiines, bobbin sanding machines, milling and drilling machines, band saw and turning lathe Use hand tools (knife, file, chisel, gouge, etc.) Use of measurement tools Skill assessment specification and weighting Health and safety to use the specified modelling materials Become familiar with the host country s Health and Safety Regulations documentation 2.2 Theoretical knowledge Theoretical knowledge is required but not tested explicitly Knowledge of rules and regulations is not examined. 2.3 Practical work The Competitor shall be able to work on the practical work by himself: Creating prototype model based on 3D CAD data and 2D drawing, using hand tools and machines (CAM or computerised machines are not allowed) Using 3D CAD system (part, assembling, drawing) Preparing and dimensioning a 2D drawing based on the 3D CAD data Working with the specified materials based on the selected test project like: chemical wood, casting resin, laminating resin Modifying minor product details creative Finishing prototype model surfaces Painting prototype model with spray cans Decorating prototype model with given materials 3. THE TEST PROJECT 3.1 Format / structure of the Test Project The format of the Test Project is a series of four standalone modules. Module A: Designing the given Test Project by using 3D CAD Module B: Preparing a 2D drawing based on the 3D CAD Module C: Making the prototype model (surface, size and assembling) Module D: Surface finishing, painting and decorating Prototype Modelling 3 of 9

5 3.1 Test Project design requirements The Test Project must be something that is well-known to the general public throughout the world and something that people touch when using it. Competitors are given a drawing and specification for their Test Project. Competitors are only allowed to modify minor product details of the Test Project. The drawing of the Test Projects needs to include at least 20 parts of specified dimensions. 3.2 Test Project development The Test Project MUST be submitted using the templates provided by WorldSkills International ( Use the Word template for text documents and DWG template for drawings Who develops the Test Project / modules The Test Project / modules are developed by: All Experts. Only one Test Project proposal is allowed per Expert How and where is the Test Project / modules developed By individual Experts 5 months before the Competition the Experts upload their Test Project proposals to the forum for all Experts to see When is the Test Project developed The Test Project is developed according to the following timeline: Time Activity 5 months before the Competition Experts upload their proposed Test Project module 4 months before the Competition The Test Project is selected from the proposals by vote of Experts on the forum 3 months before the Competition The Test Project is circulated on the WSI website At the Competition At least 30% change is made to the Test Project 3.3 Test Project marking scheme Each Test Project must be accompanied by a marking scheme proposal based on the assessment criteria defined in Section The marking scheme proposal is developed by the person(s) developing the Test Project. The detailed and final marking scheme is developed and agreed by all Experts at the Competition Marking schemes should be entered into the CIS prior to the Competition. 3.4 Test Project validation Upon completion of the Test Project modules, all Experts must confirm that Competitors can complete the Test Project modules by using the materials and equipment provided and expected level of knowledge within the time constraints. 3.5 Test Project selection The Test Project is selected as follows: By vote of Experts on the Discussion Forum 4 months before the Competition Prototype Modelling 4 of 9

6 3.6 Test Project circulation The Test Project is circulated via WorldSkills International website as follows: 3 months before the Competition 3.7 Test Project coordination (preparation for Competition) Coordination of the Test Project will be undertaken by: Chief Expert 3.8 Test Project change at the Competition At the Competition during the preparation days, all Experts cooperate and change at least 30% of each selected Test Project module. The changes will be done a professional assistant. 3.9 Material or manufacturer specifications The Competition Organiser informs Experts of material specifications required for the Test Project through the Infrastructure List provided by WorldSkills International 6 months prior to the Competition. 4. SKILL MANAGEMENT AND COMMUNICATION 4.1 Discussion Forum Prior to the Competition, all discussion, communication, collaboration and decision making regarding the skill must take place on the skill-specific Discussion Forum ( All skill-related decisions and communication are only valid if they take place on the forum. The Chief Expert (or an Expert nominated by the Chief Expert) will be moderator for this forum. Refer to Competition Rules for the timeline of communication and competition development requirements. 4.2 Competitor information All information for registered Competitors is available from the Competitor Centre ( This information includes: Competition Rules Technical Descriptions Test Projects Other Competition-related information 4.3 Test Projects Circulated Test Projects will be available from worldskills.org ( and the Competitor Centre ( 4.4 Day-to-day management The day-to-day management is defined in the Skill Management Plan that is created by the Skill Management Team led by the Chief Expert. The Skill Management Team comprises the Jury President, Chief Expert and Deputy Chief Expert. The Skill Management Plan is progressively developed in the six months prior to the Competition and finalised at the Competition by agreement of the Experts. The Skill Management Plan can be viewed in the Expert Centre ( Prototype Modelling 5 of 9

7 5. ASSESSMENT This section describes how the Experts will assess the Test Project / modules. It also specifies the assessment specifications and procedures and requirements for marking. 5.1 Assessment criteria This section defines the assessment criteria and the number of marks (subjective and objective) awarded. The total number of marks for all assessment criteria must be 100. A judgment form identical to the one used by Experts is provided to each Competitor to ensure transparency. Prototype Modelling 6 of 9

8 The Chief Expert or Deputy Chief Expert divides all Experts into several marking teams. In such cases, WorldSkills experience at a previous Competition is taken into consideration as well as culture, language and continent. If Experts have the possibility to measure the dimensions for objective marking by a digital measuring machine, the Experts can decide and organise it before the Competition. In this case, the measurement will be done by a professional assistant who is familiar with it. When the subjective marking and objective marking are performed on a module, the subjective marking should be performed first (every marking day) Progressive marking is used for each completed module. 5.5 Skill assessment weighting Objective marking Scores are awarded on a scale of 1 to = ±0 to ±0.2 8 = ±0.21 to ±0.3 6 = ±0.31 to ±0.4 4 = ±0.41 to ±0.5 2 = ±0.51 to ±1.0 1 = Exceeding ±1.0 0 = Not completed Angles +/-30' = 10 points +/-1 = 5 points Above 1 = 0 points Plastic fillets and radii +/-0.5mm = 10 points Above 0.5mm = 5 points Not attempted = 0 points Minimum one fillet, radii and angle must be measured. 6. SKILL-SPECIFIC SAFETY REQUIREMENTS Refer to Host Country Health & Safety documentation for Host Country regulations. No pneumatic tools are allowed for Creative Modelling. Only electric hand tools with dust extractors are allowed. 7. MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT 7.1 Infrastructure List The Infrastructure List details all equipment, materials and facilities provided by the Competition Organiser. The Infrastructure List is online ( The Infrastructure List specifies the items & quantities requested by the Experts for the next Competition. The Competition Organiser will progressively update the Infrastructure List specifying the actual quantity, type, brand/model of the items. Items supplied by the Competition Organiser are shown in a separate column. Prototype Modelling 7 of 9

9 At each Competition, the Experts must review and update the Infrastructure List in preparation for the next Competition. Experts must advise the Technical Director of any increases in space and/or equipment. At each Competition, the Technical Observer must audit the Infrastructure List that was used at that Competition. The Infrastructure List does not include items that Competitors and/or Experts are required to bring and items that Competitors are not allowed to bring they are specified below. CAD system must be able to support CAD software, and software provided must be according to Competitor s preferred language. 7.2 Materials, equipment and tools supplied by Competitors in their toolbox Individual Competitors must bring equipments such as safety shoes, work clothes, dust-proof glasses and a gas mask. Competitors must bring tools that are required to complete a series of Test Projects. A tool list is provided below for reference purposes. Hand tools for processing: Chisels, planes, cutting tools such as knives, and files Electric tools for processing (allowed only with dust extractor): Hand grinder, coupler and bits for cutting, etc. Measuring tools: Measuring tools such as a scale, vernier and depth gauge, etc Resin material tools: Spatula Painting tools: A gas mask that conforms to the safety standard in the Host Country Masking tools 7.3 Materials, equipment and tools supplied by Experts Not applicable 7.4 Materials & equipment prohibited in the skill area CAD systems other than those provided at the Competition Computerised machines and tools other than those provided at the Competition Already prepared parts cannot be used for the Test Project 7.5 Proposed workshop and workstation layouts Workshop layouts from London are available at: Prototype Modelling 8 of 9
