1 The following rules are for the state contest only. Students/Teams that qualify for the national contest need to adhere to the rules and guidelines for that national contest. The rules can be found in the Skills USA Championships Technical Standards available from SkillsUSA Publication Sales. For both state and national contests, you should also watch for contest updates sent from the Wisconsin SkillsUSA state office. For national contests, you can find contest updates at the national SkillsUSA website. CNC MILLING TECHNOLOGY PURPOSE To evaluate each contestant s preparation for employment in Computer Numeric Control machining and to recognize outstanding students for excellence and professionalism in the CNC machining field. GENERAL REGULATIONS People entering this contest must follow all rules listed below as well as the General Regulations of the Wisconsin Skills Championships. The General Regulations can be found in a separate file under that name. You will be held accountable for knowing and following all rules and guidelines of the Wisconsin Skills Championships. CLOTHING REQUIREMENT Official SkillsUSA khaki work shirt and pants, black or brown leather work shoes, and safety glasses with side shields or goggles. (Prescription glasses can be used only if they are equipped with side shields. If not, they must be covered with goggles.) ELIGIBILITY Open to active SkillsUSA members enrolled in programs with precision machining, automated manufacturing or CNC as the occupational objective. LOCATION This contest will be held at the contestant s school using their own shop equipment. There will be a four hour time limit for the contest. This contest will be scheduled for March or April of This contest may be held in the morning, afternoon, or after school. Please contact Allen Weiss via phone or to schedule a time. Phone: (262) aweiss@integritywireedm.com EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS 1. Supplied by the Schools participating: Necessary information and furnishings for judges and technical committee 2. Supplied by the contestant: a. 0 1 micrometer b. 6-inch caliper (digital or vernier) c. Calculator d. Pencils and paper e. Machinery s Handbook (optional) f. 6, 8, or 10 deburring file 1 State Technical Standards

2 SCOPE OF THE CONTEST Each contestant will receive a dimensioned drawing and material to CNC-machine a part. Participants are expected to write a CNC program, set up the machine and tool offsets and machine a part without the use of CAD/CAM software. Only the part will be evaluated, not the CNC program. Participants are given 15 minutes to study the task and ask questions before beginning. A separate Written Test, CNC Back Plotting Test, and Measurement Test will also be given. The competition will have a four hour time limit. Competencies required are as follows: 1. Programming a. Write and verify CNC program without the use of CAM software (competitor has the opportunity to correct any program errors on the machine) b. Display complete knowledge of DIN/ISO programming (G and M codes) c. Apply the correct use of cutter compensation (G41/G42) d. Adjust speeds and feeds as needed 2. Setup a. Setup machine and establish a zero reference point for machining the part b. Select and mount necessary tools from the provided set c. Establish tool offsets and enter them into the CNC machine control d. Enter any necessary tool corrections into the CNC machine control 3. Perform mathematical calculations a. Calculate CNC speeds and feeds b. Calculate programming coordinates from the drawing c. Calculate radius tangent points 4. Machining a. Machine the part per print. 5. Communication a. Read and interpret technical blue prints b. Understand all symbols on technical blue prints, such as geometric tolerances, surface-finish symbols, corner-break symbols, etc. General Information The CNC machines will be available for orientation on the day before the competition. During this time, technicians will be on hand to help competitors and their advisors familiarize themselves with the equipment. An actual test part will be programmed, set up and machined from a provided drawing and stock material. The materials used for the competition will be delrin. All speeds and feeds will be programmed as if the material was 1018 cold rolled steel. Test project scoring The three evaluation criteria for the test part are: 1. Conformity to Print Part zero matches machine zero 2. Dimensions This is an objective scoring. Scores will only be granted if dimension is in compliance with the print. The score for each dimension will either be full points, half points or zero points. 2 State Technical Standards

3 3. Use of Material If the competitor makes a mistake on the test part, he/she may request a second piece of stock material. A deduction of 5 points will be assessed for the use of extra stock. 4. Written Test This is a 50 question fill-in-the-blank test pertaining to basic machining knowledge. 5. CNC Back Plotting Test This test requires students to back plot a shape on graph paper from a CNC code. 6. Measurement Test This is a 12 station test where competitors are required to use mechanical inspection equipment. Equipment will be provided by the judge. Competitors are advised to be familiar with the following equipment: a. Outside micrometer b. Inside micrometer c. Telescopic gages d. Combination square e. Depth micrometer f. Angle protractors g. Scale h. Vernier caliper i. Small hole gages j. Radius gages Please note: All of the inspection equipment will be mechanical, not digital.
