?! Design Portfolio Year 1 Jonathon Shek
Newcastle City Council...
Newcastle City Council... This was the first project which we got given in the first year of study. With this project i was able to learn how to present my work, what was wrong and what ways in which i could improve on. I chose to design a bin located at the Baltic art museum, retro was the theme which i went towards as i thought it was most appropriate within the environment.
Green Cost... First major group project. The design concept was to bring awareness to the cost of the electricity on the electrical appliances which we use around the home. We hope to make people aware of how much electricity they spend and allow them to adjust their lifestyle to maximise their savings by changing how and the length of time they use electricity in the home.
DAB Radio... DAB radio designed to be portable as well as use in the home. Easy to use touch screen with shortcuts to make the experience more simple and easy, different from any other radio. Branded by LG so it had to suit the companies philosophy.
DAB Radio...
DAB Radio...
Shoe Project... The Shoe Diaries Project. To design Trainers for an extreme sport. For this Project we had to design trainers for an extreme sport of choice, we decided to do a pair of trainers for skateboarding. The idea was to protect the most worn areas of the trainers while skateboarding, as well as for the sport itself it also had to provide a sense of fashion to the market.
Shoe Project... Illustration / Presentation to compliment the design. Sell the trainer with different advertising.
Shoe Project...
Shoe Project... Few of the sketch developments, exploration of detailing and colour.
Shoe Project Models... Model to visually represent the form in 3 Dimensions.
Refreshment - Sensual... Sensual, a place to relax and refresh the senses. A room within the working environment for employees to relax during their break to refresh their senses so they can get back to work stressless. This was the first open brief to allow us to make decisions of our own to what we thought was right, best way to execute the brief.
Refreshment - Sensual... Idea generation and final concepts. Booklet created to explain every detail of the whole design concept and the idea behind the company. Only the main sections have been taken from the booklet.
Play Project... Designing a toy suitable for the client which we were provided with. A soft toy rocket designed for any child aged 5+. The concept was about allowing the child to explore and be creative, able to draw on the surface of the rocket with crayola s washable markers and simply wash the toy clean by putting it in the washing machine when wanting to re-use the toy. I aimed to create something so the child is able to go anywhere with, able to take it outside as well as go to sleep with it.
Play Project...
Play Project...
Play Project... Short flash animation to demonstrate the use of the toy and easiness of cleaning.
Salt and Pepper Dispenser...
Salt and Pepper Dispenser...
DAB Radio - Detailing... To design a DAB radio with constraints to specific dimensions and number of components. The main focus of the project was not the form initially but to learn to detail appropriately to get the best results.
DAB Radio - Photoshop Rendering...
CPU Design a computer with monitor with minimum number of components which are particular sizes. For this assignment we had to create our own layout sheets to get the right perspective for our drawings.
Chocolate... This was a project which we had to complete within the studio session, 2 hour project. Minimum of 6 A3 design sheets within the time given. We had to design a range of 8 chocolates each with different tastes, the criteria was that the form of the chocolate had to describe the flavour which it was without using too obvious detailing. I found this really challenging within the time period which we were allowed to complete the brief, to speed up the design exploration period compared to my normal pace. Opening to reveal the flavour which the chocolate was using different forms to emphasize the flavour.
Storyboarding...
Triadic Comparison... Comparison of 3 products within a category. Looking at the cutlery in the eastern and western society, why they choose to use what they use and is it the culture itself that has brought them into using those cutlery. Also compared the traditional form of eating, our hands. Rather than comparing them directly I chose to leave 2 questions, what do you prefer and why you prefer it.
Brand Opportunities...
Brand Opportunities...
Timeline... Timeline of rockets, illustrating the key points of important advancements in technology of rockets from the beginning of how it all started to what it is like at the current time America announced it will put a man on the moon in a decade. According to one ancient legend, a Chinese official named Wan-Hoo in 1644 attempted a flight to the moon using a large wicker chair to which were fastened 47 large rockets. Forty seven assistants, each armed with torches, rushed forward to light the fuses. When the smoke cleared, the flying chair and Wan-Hoo were gone. The start of WW2 (1939) made governments fuel money into research and development of rockets to stay ahead of their enemies. The Germans developed the V2 first ballistic missile. Which was a great contributor in rocket development today The Saturn rockets (1965) were the first manned rockets to enter space using a 3 stage deployment system to enable it to break through the Earths atmosphere to deliver small payloads into space Space shuttles are introduced, major re-design allowing for reusable crafts, with great efficiency and higher velocity able to carry larger payloads into outer space. NASA s twin robot geologists, the Mars Exploration Rovers, launched toward Mars on June 10 and July 7, 2003, in search of answers about the history of water on Mars. The Mars Exploration Rover mission is part of NASA s Mars Exploration Program, a long-term effort of robotic exploration of the red planet Besides the development of commercial spaceflight, there are plans for human fly to mar, using new rockets that are powered by plasma, massively reducing the flight time by half Sci-fi progression Development of other technology through space rocket e.g weather forecasting, GPS. Space Rocket Timeline Robert Goddard launched the worlds first liquid propellant of liquid oxygen an gasoline on march 16, It climbed 41 feet, in 2.5 seconds. Setting the future for using liquid propellents rather than gun powder. On October 4th 1957, Sputnik 1 was first launched marking the start of the space race which lead to major advances in the technological field. Sputnik was the first ever artificial satellite which lead to the possibilities of better communication. April 3rd 1991 marked the first international space station which lead to a unity between nations. This created vast opportunities for new designs and developments to be conceived. The modular design allowed units to be constructed on earth and easily added on when necessary. Astrium s collaboration with Marc Newson is the latest development in the pursuit of commercial space flight. This project marks the milestone in the industrial design world, with the first true consideration of aesthetics to the same degree as engineering.
Intersecting Forms... This was the first model making assignment during the first year. Introduction to model making and learn to represent ideas in 3 Dimensions. With this assignment we had to use various thicknesses of card depending on what we found most appropriate to the design.
Plastic Card - Part 1... This project was based on learning to use a new material to create model prototypes. During this project i learned to use a new material and apply new techniques to create the best finish possible.
Plastic Card - Part 2... Second part of the plastic card brief. A set of two pieces which link together to form one and can be taken apart also.
A Model Time Piece... Design and model a clock. This was the first working model made, simplicity was the key to the design and appearance, keeping everything to its minimal but also making it fully functional.
A Model Time Piece...
Non Literal Games Pieces... Game pieces consisting of four separate pieces each which will be able to stand alone and also come together to form a set. With this brief we learned to use grey foam. Making it into a white model meant we had to apply a white coat on top of the foam to correct the colour. Non literal appearance and had to have a hierarchy.
Computer Applications... Different applications used to produce illustrations and animations. Adobe CS3 is the main suite used to produce the work during first year. Short flash animation produced using adobe Flash CS3 Illustration of a barcode design using adobe Illustrator CS3.
Flash Animation... A short flash animation created using adobe flash CS3. Screen shots of key points along the animation.
