A series of activities and communications. a)attending the 10 th Annual Student Chapter Leadership Workshop and the Optics + Photonics 2011 Conference. During August 20 to August 25, one of our members, Yanqiao Xie was invited by SPIE to attend the 10 th Annual Student Chapter Leadership Workshop and the Optics + Photonics 2011 Conference on behalf of our Zhejiang University chapter of SPIE. This annual conference was held by SPIE, at a very beautiful sea-side city, San Diego, California. Every year SPIE strive to create a fun and informative series of events for over 100 student attendees from all over the world. 3
The first day, we were warmly welcomed by Benjamyn Lockwood, the student activity coordinator. I was deeply impressed by his special greetings that using different languages to say good morning to all the student leaders from different countries. Then the student leaders were divided into about 10 groups to discuss solutions of 10 different topics about chapter construction, making plans and executing events, etc. After discussion and brain storming, each group introduces their discussion results by presentation. After delicious lunch outside with the sunshine, we have a class about teamwork. We learned that what is an effective team and how leaders create high performance teams. After the class we have group case study to practice which give me many inspirations. I also realize the importance of group work again as I can learn a lot from others by discussion. The conference began after the leadership workshop. We chose the topics of interest and learned a lot. This workshop is very meaningful and our student chapter leader learned a lot. We will keep the saying by Patrick Lencioni in our heart that Teamwork is almost always lacking within organizations that fail, and often present within those that succeed. By round-tables discussion, our leader had some new ideas about how to motivate and passionate chapter members and make activities much more attractive. We have some new plans like: 1. Seminars and presentations by professors invited from the SPIE s list can open to all the students from the universities, not only for our chapter members or our department. So everyone who is interested in our topics could attend. We may make friends and work together to hold some new cross-activities. 2. Choose one to three most active members to get free fee next year to encourage more people being active. 3. Ask all the members for the ideas about activities next year and divide them into different groups. Let them choose what they want, then they can do better and be one of the activity committee. 4. We can even hold a weekend party to attract more people when we recruit new members. The idea of picnic can also be adopted. It is a successful leadership workshop from which we learn skills, make friends and enjoy the beautiful landscape. Looking forward to the better workshop next year! b)attending the 1st Student Chapter Leadership Workshop of China 4
During August 20 to August 25, one of our members, Jinyang Liu was invited and participated in the 1st Student Chapter Leadership Workshop of China in Sichuan University. The workshop is held in Chengdu Wangjiang campus, Sichuan University. Representatives from SPIE student chapter members of Sichuan University, Beijing Polytechnic University, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and Zhejiang University attended. We briefed each other on their respective areas of Research, out member, jinyang Liu, gave a talk to share experience of how we perform our chapter in Zhejiang University, invite distinguished reporters come to our school to give us reports, and hosts activities inside school. This workshop turned out to be a success in which we shared, gained valuable experience on the Exchange and discussion, provides the basis for the further development of SPIE in future. We decided to hold this workshop regularly in the future, work hard together to expanding the influence of SPIE and we student chapters in China! 2. Invited Distinguished reports and communications. a) Invite SPIE President Dr. Ralph B. James and CEO Dr. Eugene Arthurs In December 13th, 2010, by the chance of Asia Communications and Photonics Conference and Exhibition 2010,hosted in Shanghai, China by SPIE. We invited SPIE President Dr. Ralph B. James and CEO Dr. Eugene Arthurs to our school to introduce and communicate with us. Dr. James first introduced the history of SPIE, membership development and highlights the SPIE student organizations. Many graduated students participated in and showed their interest in SPIE. Afer that, both of them gave a Distinguished report as follows. 5
Two Distinguished reports: Dr. Dan-Xia Xu, Institute for Microstructural Sciences, National Research Council Canada, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, K1A 0R6 Silicon photonic wire and subwavelength devices for biosensing and communications Silicon photonic waveguides can be scaled down to submicron dimensions, due to the high refractive index of silicon. This scaling leads to single mode photonic wires that can guide light along bends with a radius of a few microns, and allow the interaction between light and matter being manipulated at the wavelength scale. Optical interconnects are envisioned to take advantage of these properties to form essential building blocks such as filters, demultiplexers, modulators and photodetectors. At this subwavelength scale, the waveguide optical properties are strongly modified by the surrounding materials. This behavior can be used for optical sensing applications, and silicon photonic wire sensors are the smallest and most sensitive label-free integrated molecular sensors reported. They are a serious contender for lab-on-a-chip technology by allowing real-time monitoring of a large number of sensors for pathogen detection, genomics, disease diagnostics and drug discovery. Optimized waveguide structures for sensing fall in the same dimensional range as that in components for interconnects and communications applications. Therefore the same high quality material supply, knowledge in photonic design, well-established CMOS fabrication technologies and facilities can be shared for all these applications. Here we review our work on the development of Si photonic wire components, including specific examples of components that are tailored as evanescent field biosensor arrays and ring resonator based filters for communications. Monitoring of biomolecular binding is demonstrated with a detection limit of 0.3 pg/mm2. On-chip temperature drift compensation is achieved by using a reference resonator. A novel grating coupler using subwavelength structures facilitates the coupling of light between the optical fiber and waveguide chips. 6
Dr. Dan-Xia Xu is a Senior Research Officer with the Optoelectronics Devices Group at the Institute for Microstructural Sciences, National Research Council Canada, and also an adjunct professor with the Department of Electronics, Carleton University. She received her Ph.D. degree from Linköping University of Sweden in 1991, from work on silicon-germanium HBTs and tunneling diodes. Since joining NRC, she initially worked on the fabrication and design of high speed SiGe HBTs, silicides for sub-micron VLSI, SiGe and silicide photodetectors, and later switched her research field to integrated optics. In she was part of the research team at Optenia Inc. that successfully developed the first glass waveguide echelle grating demultiplexer. Her current research interests are in silicon photonics, particularly in ring resonators and other nanophotonic devices for biological sensing and optical communications, as well as polarization management of SOI components. She has authored over 250 scientific publications, including several book chapters, and holds 6 patents. Srinivasan Anand, the Department of microelectronics and applied physics, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Nanostructured Semiconductor materials for photonics An overview of the group s research on nanostructured semiconductor materials and nanoscale characterization techniques, with an emphasis on photonic/optoelectronic applications will be given. The rest of talk will focus on two-dimensional photonic crystals in InP-based materials and on (random) nanowires/pillars in different semiconductors. Fabrication of photonic crystals and nanopillars including process physics and material (electronic and optical) properties will be discussed. These fundamental investigations will be shown to have direct implications on the optical and electrical properties of nanostructured photonic devices, and also how materials can in principle be modified for specific applications. The optical characteristics of some selected photonic crystal devices/structures such as heterostructure waveguide filters, cavities and lasers will be presented. Experimental demonstration of band-structure engineered above-band gap phenomena such as negative refraction and auto-collimation will be reported. Finally we will address the formation of nanowires/pillars and the behavior of light in such media in the context of potential applications such as photovoltaics, LEDs and second-harmonic generation. Srinivasan Anand received his PhD degree in Physics in 1993 from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai and subsequently was a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Solid state physics, Lund University, Lund, Sweden. Converged Optical and Wireless Access Networks Using Radio over Fiber Technologies Prof. Gee-Kung Chang, Byers Eminent Scholar Chair Professor School of Electrical and Computer Engineering Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA ABSTRACT With the rapid growth of bandwidth demand of emerging data and video-intensive wireless services, radio-over-fiber (ROF) technology has gained tremendous momentum due to its ability to increase network capacity, coverage, and mobility by seamlessly integrating optical wired fiber and wireless access systems. Owing to the globally available 7-8-GHz unlicensed bandwidth, the 60-GHz millimeter-wave band with negligible interference with current low radio-frequency wireless services is viewed as a promising candidate that realizes very high throughput wireless 8
local area networks (VHT-WLANs) and wireless personal area networks (WPANs). Several industrial and standardization efforts have been carrying out, such as IEEE c, ECMA-387, and IEEE VHT, to promote global use of multi-gigabit MM-Wave wireless technology. In this talk, we will highlight some recent progresses in system design and experimental demonstration of ROF technologies for optical millimeter signal generation, processing, and transport in high-bit-rates wireless over fiber access networks. Dr. Gee-Kung Chang is the Byers Endowed Chair Professor of Georgia Institute of Technology and an Eminent Scholar of Georgia Research Alliance. Prof. Chang devoted a total of 23 years of service to Bell Labs, Bellcore, and Telcordia Technologies where he served as Director and Chief Scientist of Optical Internet Research.. Prior to joining Georgia Tech, he served as Vice President and Chief Technology Strategist of OpNext, Inc., where he was in charge of technology planning and product strategy for high-speed optoelectronic components and systems. Dr. Chang has co-authored 56 U.S. and international patents and published more than 350 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers. He received Bellcore President s Award in 1994, won R&D 100 Award in 1996, and elected as a Telcordia Fellow in He is a Fellow of Photonics Society of Chinese American, a Fellow of IEEE Photonics Society, and a Fellow of Optical Society of America. He has been invited to deliver keynote messages on Convergence of Broadband Wireless and Optical Access Networks at OFC 08, FiO 09, ICCSC 09, PhotonicsWest 09, APMP 09, and Globecom 10. He has served four times as the lead guest editor for special issues of Journal of Lightwave Technology sponsored by IEEE LEOS and OSA; the first one was published in December 2000 on Optical Networks, the second in November 2004 on Metro and Access Networks, the third in 2007 on Convergence of Optical Wireless Access Network, and a most recent one on Very High Throughput Wireless over Fiber Technologies and Applications.
