1 seminar MAY 2016 DESIGN AND TESTING OF HVDC INSULTATION SYSTEMS Understanding the basics of HVDC insulation behavior This two-day course introduces the concepts of HVDC insulation system design and testing, highlighting aspects such as the difference between AC and DC behavior, space charge and routes to failure.

2 COURSE DESCRIPTION 1 Basics of designing insulating systems for HVDC. first part In a series of lectures and demonstrations an introduction is given about how an insulating system responds to the application of a DC, AC or pulsed voltage. Important phenomena such as polarization and space charge will be dealt with in detail. Ample attention will be given to the measurement and analysis of space charge. A set of basic rules for designing HVDC insulation systems will be discussed. 2 Ageing of HVDC insulation systems is treated with a focus on HVDC cable systems. second part The main ageing and breakdown mechanisms will be highlighted, with special attention for interfaces (such as in joints and terminations). 3 Voltage life and testing of HVDC cable systems. third part Here, the focus will be on how to devise a proper testing scheme based on the expected operating conditions and the prevailing ageing mechanisms. The statistical analysis of life time and failure data will be discussed. Finally, the prospects for on-line monitoring of HVDC insulation systems is critically addressed.
