1 One-day Workshop on HV insulation diagnosis by means of PD detection/measurement methods by Florian Predl and GK Papneja OMICRON Date: Time: Venue: 28 November 2016 (Monday) 9:00 17:00 (8:30 for registration) 2/F New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel, 72 Mody Road, Tsim Sha Tsui East The Workshop is organised by the IEEE PES/IAS/PELS/IES Joint Chapters (HK), and is supported by OMICRON electronics Asia Limited, the Electrical Engineering Department of PolyU, HKIE Electrical Division, and the Electrical Engineering Alumni Association of PolyU Workshop Objectives Partial discharge (PD) is one of the earliest key indicators for insulation deterioration/ breakdown in electrical assets that are subjected to high voltages. This can lead to the total destruction of the asset if not detected in time. This is why PD measurement has gained a lot of significance over the past decades. However, PD measurement and analysis involves a number of challenges: 1) Discrimination between interference and true, internal PD 2) Separation of various PD sources and noise 3) Interpretation and analysis of the measured results With the help of state of the art technology, the above challenges can be overcome and an effective PD measurement can be performed both offline/online at the HV device operating location. This enables the asset managers, product developers and engineers to quickly detect, assess and locate faults, enabling them to successfully prevent breakdowns before they occur. This workshop aims at providing the knowledge needed in order to be able to understand these advanced techniques of PD measurements on transformers, cables, rotating machines and switchgears and also carry out the risk assessment of these HV assets.

3 Speakers: Florian Predl Florian Predl commenced with OMICRON Austria in 2007 as an application engineer with special focus on advanced instrument transformer diagnostics within the Engineering Services team. In 2013 Florian joined OMICRON Australia as a Field Application Engineer. Before starting at OMICRON, he visited the Federal Higher Technical Institute in Rankweil, Austria, where he graduated in There he was focusing on high frequency technology. His final thesis was focused on range extension of RFID systems for business applications by using high frequency amplifiers. Florian is an experienced trainer on high voltage equipment diagnostics with extensive field experiences. He also presented numerous papers in various conferences including TECHCON Asia-Pacific, IIEE Philippines. GK Papneja GK Papneja is Regional Project Manager (Monitoring) for OMICRON in Asia Pacific. He has been associated with OMICRON for more than a decade and has extensive knowledge and experience in diagnostic testing of high voltage electrical assets, including large power transformers, rotating machines, cables etc and power system secondary assets including protection & metering devices. He is also an active supporting member for OMICRON Academy and has conducted several trainings on Partial Discharge measurements & diagnosis. He received his Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics in year 1995 followed by Master Diploma in Power Plant Engineering in year 1997.He is an active member of NSC B-5 CIGRE India and has represented OMICRON in a number of national & international forums.
