2 IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award 2010 The IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award We re searching for a dynamic young woman who represents the very best of our profession. She s a high achiever. A problem solver. A team player. A professional in every aspect of her work. She should be an inspiration to her colleagues and, just as importantly, have the charisma and personality to inspire others to follow in her footsteps. We ve set our sights high. Your qualities are in demand and we believe the world of engineering would like to see more of you. What is the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award? This prestigious Award honours the very best female engineers working in the UK today. It seeks to highlight the achievements of women in engineering and to encourage others to enter the profession. The Award recognises a young woman who has firmly established herself as an energetic and technically excellent professional. The winner will follow in the illustrious footsteps of many other inspiring engineers since the start of the programme in The IET Young Woman Engineer 2010 will be an able ambassador, representing women in engineering and acting as an inspirational role model. How will the winner benefit? The winner will claim her award at a prestigious national ceremony in London on 8th December 2010, which will be covered by both print and broadcast media. Along with a trophy, she will receive a cheque for 1,000. Perhaps the most exciting benefit of being named The Young Woman Engineer of the Year 2010 is the opportunity it will bring to attend high profile events and to meet some of the most influential and interesting people in our industry. It s an amazing opportunity to get noticed for all the right reasons and to secure long term career success. The runner-up will be awarded the WES Prize which is sponsored by the Women s Engineering Society. She will receive a cheque for 500 along with a trophy. Who should apply? The panel is looking for a woman under the age of 30 who is already holding a responsible position as a leading professional engineer and who has the flair, charisma and experience to present engineering as an exciting and rewarding career.

3 IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award 2010 The Mary George Memorial Prize for Apprentices The Mary George Memorial Prize for Apprentices will be awarded to an outstanding female engineering apprentice who has made a contribution within the workplace beyond the realms of her normal duties. She will have demonstrated dynamism in her approach to the solution of engineering problems. A real team player, she will be seen as an all rounder who will act as an enthusiastic role model to encourage other young women to enter the profession of engineering through the apprenticeship route. Women who are currently employed in UK Apprenticeships, Young Apprenticeships or Advanced Apprenticeships within any discipline of engineering are eligible for this award. The winner of this award will receive a cheque for 750, an engraved trophy and a certificate. Nominations for the Mary George Memorial Prize will automatically be considered for the Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award winner, Cassandra Coles Cassandra is currently working as an Engineering Apprentice at Rolls-Royce Plc and has spent the last year working primarily within the Operations Test Department. Her passion for discovering how things work has ensured that her practical, hands-on approach to her work has been used to great effect within the role. 4 IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award 2010 Could you face up to the challenge? 2009 IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year, Sally Walters is currently working as a Senior Civil Engineer for Pell Frischmann Consulting Engineers. Sally gained her MEng 1st class Honours degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Nottingham and an MPhil in Engineering from Exeter University in Sally brings a high level of professionalism to her role, from specific project work to managing her progression to ICE chartered status and mentoring colleagues. In her spare time, Sally is very active, enjoying skiing, squash, rock-climbing and even running marathons as well as socialising, reading, travelling and getting involved with International Development projects.

Short-listed candidates will be invited to attend an interview in London in September The judging panel includes representatives from the media, the world of engineering and the IET.
