7 2013 Awards finalists Abbie Hutty FINALIST Spacecraft Structures Engineer, Astrium Ltd, Stevenage It is a great honour to be selected as a YWE finalist, as I personally work with some outstanding women engineers, and know many more in the industry whose talent and commitment to the profession is inspirational. Engineers in Britain create ground-breaking technologies to advance and enhance our lives every day, and are crucial to the country s economy. Whilst we are gradually breaking down the old stereotypes and misconceptions that the public has about engineering, there is still a way to go, as well as a shortfall of new talent entering the industry. As such this Award is not only a recognition of personal contribution, but just as importantly, brings together finalists who illustrate the reality of a modern day engineering career to the next generation of potential engineers. Abbie is a Spacecraft Structures engineer at Astrium, currently working on the ExoMars Rover mission; Europe s fi rst Rover Mission to Mars. She holds a Master s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Surrey, where she graduated fi rst in her class. During her day job Abbie co-ordinates a team of specialists to achieve a rover structure that will survive the rigors of a rocket launch, descent through the atmosphere of the Red Planet, and landing on the surface, followed by an operational lifetime in the punishing Martian environment. Her role covers all aspects of the design lifecycle, from concept design through to manufacturing, and ultimately to testing and final delivery. Alongside these challenging technical demands, her role frequently leads her to participate in media events, where she relishes the opportunity to share her passion, and to the highlight the unique thrills presented by a career in engineering. Abbie has always been driven to promote engineering to the broader public, and is particularly keen on initiatives encouraging young people to consider a career in this field. 26 The United Kingdom Association of Professional Engineers This Association ( UKAPE ) has been in existence since 1969, for Engineers by Engineers, initially as an independent union and later as a semi-independent part of the former EETPU. We have remained there through all the changes and mergers that have since taken place. We are now part of Unite the Union, the largest UK union in the private sector. We have members in all sectors of industry: we are open to recruit Chartered and Incorporated Engineers and those professionals associated with engineering and whose qualifications are rated equally with those Engineers. The Association is governed by its own elected Executive Committee and elected officers. The final say on policy is decided by an Annual Members Meeting, which all members have the right to attend - with expenses paid. Provided we are not completely out of line with the main union, we have a great deal of autonomy. Many of the senior members of UKAPE have been with the Association almost since it was formed. They are now near or beyond normal retirement age. We are looking for younger active engineers to carry on the mission of engineers assisting engineers as envisaged in We encourage you to join UKAPE and become actively involved in its running. There are qualified engineers who feel there is no need for union representation: the company will listen to what I have to say and they would never do that to a professional. Our answer is Yes, they will listen to you but yes, they will try to do that to you. Union membership, as a percentage, is higher for professionals than for manual and administrative workers. How many doctors are not members of the BMA? Many of our members have very good reason to be thankful for the very experienced help that they are able to draw on by being in a successful union. Industrial relations are not about going on strike at a moment s notice - they are about the legal rights of employees, about one-to-one negotiation, about compensation, about the interpretation of the Pension Handbook, about redundancy and case law. Several members have felt so keenly about an issue that they have resorted to whistle blowing and have lived to be very sorry: just one issue where you do need help! The plain fact is that almost all of the help that qualified people need is on one-to-one issues, not mass action. The senior members have experience and can give general advice but for specific information this is what the full-time officials are good at and they are responsible, capable colleagues, not ranting militants. Unite has been in the public eye recently and the union is a major contributor to the Labour Party s funds but UKAPE s agreement with Unite does not allow any member to be automatically a contributor to the Political Fund. We think that is a decision that every member has the right to make for him or herself. The opportunities in Engineering at present are huge and we are sure that many engineers will go on to have very successful careers, with little or no problems on the industrial front. On the other hand many things can change in the next five, ten, twenty years? and you could regret not having access to some help. Membership of UKAPE could be your insurance against the slings and arrows that will come your way in your working life, so Join us TODAY!
