You ll know what s needed to build on our already impressive reputation, and you ll have plenty of opportunity to make your mark on what and how we teach our students. Since the Faculty s inception in 2006, we ve worked hard (and invested big) to recruit exceptional staff who have helped us achieve a world-class reputation in biology, chemistry, geography, psychology and health studies. That s why, over the last six years, we ve seen considerable growth in the faculty, primarily in teaching and research, but also in reach-out and enterprise activity. Such is the significance of our research, we ve set-up collaborations with many industry and government organisations. In fact, almost 50% of the University s total research income comes from the Faculty of Science and Engineering. That s why we continue to invest in state-of-the art laboratories, technology and equipment to make sure science research remains at the forefront of the University s activities. And, in summer 2011, building work began on a new 6m Biomedical Research Institute, bringing together all biomedical research and scientists into a single site. So, you ll have the chance to work with big players in the industry, like BAE Systems, Microsoft, Reckitt Benckiser, Unilever, GlaxoSmithKline, the NHS and English Heritage.

9 Department of Chemistry We provide our academic staff with the opportunity to develop their research careers in a collaborative environment, within a department that has an international research reputation for applied and interdisciplinary research. The Department of Chemistry has a thriving and vibrant research culture. The three main interdisciplinary research themes include: Biological Chemistry, Materials Chemistry and Chemical Process Technology. Interdisciplinary research at the University has been strengthened by the creation of a number of research institutes. The Centre for Adaptive Science and Sustainability (CASS) brings together researchers from disciplines such as Engineering, Geography, Chemistry and Physics to strengthen leadership in environmental and renewable sectors. The new bio-sciences research institute, the Allam Institute, has increased the interaction between Chemistry, Biology and Subjects Allied to Health, including the Hull York Medical School. The department has a strong research ethos and in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise 95% of our staff were involved in research of an international standard, 5% of which was rated world-leading. We are well-known for our research, especially in areas such as liquid crystals and organophotonics, surfactants and colloids and lab-on-a-chip (LoC). We have a strong and diverse research income from the UK research councils, the EU, charities and industry. Our facilities are spread across three large interconnected buildings on the Hull Campus, and we have recently invested 1.3 million in our teaching and research laboratories. Our research is supported by an excellent infrastructure of spectroscopic services and workshops, glassblowing and lab-on-a-chip fabrication. The department is consistently recognised as one of the UK s best by the National Student Survey, teachers, employers and league tables particularly for the quality of our teaching, student support and the career prospects of our graduates. We are proud of our friendly and supportive learning environment. In fact, 95% of students interviewed in the 2013 National Student Survey were satisfied with the quality of our teaching. Our range of academic programmes accommodates for a wide variety of interests, including toxicology, nanotechnology and molecular medicine.
